Pretty sure no one cares about your stupid opinion. Ive steered clear of the entire Berra ordeal because I actually dont give a shit.

Just because you started in 91 doesnt make a regular opinion any less regular. I started in 92 and most of my opinions are pretty fucking stupid still.

brooklyn brawler.....

Thanks for the links... i just read all of it.
I can't speak on the West 49 thing... because i have no idea about it.

I don't think Berra's video started this thing... the hate seemed to start half way through the BB2. Actually... there has been Berra hate here for a few years. Ever since his DVS video. All the discussion about fake spots and all that. So there was already a "hate" foundation. Even after he started posted clips out of the Berrics... some dudes would say... "damn.. that was sick... but i hate Berra"...ect. He already was "2 steps backwards" on catching ANY love on the Slap board. So now since the "hate" has been stacking up on him here for the last couple years... i can see how it could have gotten to this point.

I don't agree or disagree.... i have my opinion. My opinion is that he is offering shops to advertise on the Berrics for a deep discount. No other mail order shops have ever done anything like that. Thats cool to me. Its ultimately up to the shop.

Some shops buy advertising in magazines... they get 1/2 page ads.. or even full page. I really never see anyone dissin the magazine for running the shop ad. Nor have i seen another shop get mad at the one running the ad. Its virtually the same thing.

Of course they have money.... both have been pro for hella long. Both have family's... In my eye's... i wish they were filthy rich. Both have paved the ground for street skating. Berra did full cab flip to frontside nose slides 15 years ago. And Koston... shit.... what else needs to be said?? Go watch "Falling Down".... or even the H-Street video "Next"...

As far as your last couple sentences... Trust me... i know how the corporate thing in skateboarding goes.... shit.. the most popular sneakers here are the most corporate ones in the business...lol. Also... BOTH of the companies i represent for over 10 years got bought by corporate... one of which i thought would have NEVER happened.
Steve and Eric are not corporate suits. And truthfully... the pro's are paving the way for the Berrics. The pro's are supporting what the Berrics are doing.

I never understood why Gonz is such a sacred cow, but a guy like Berra (who's been around nearly as long) has "a bullseye on his ass." Sure Gonz did lots of shit first, but did you read that Big Brother (I think it was) interview that was posted here? You know, the one where he admits he was obsessed with money. And look at his antics. He's got to have been one of the most money-hungry, gimmicky dudes in the industry (presumably a Slap cardinal sin) during the last 10 years with no legit footage during that time to show for it. Again, I respect the trails he's blazed, but Gonz is the very definition of milking it.

Reading a bunch of 20 year-olds tell me I don't know WTF I'm talking about is amusing. I've been skating since '91, and Video Days was the second video I ever watched (the first being Powell Video 8, with Cab), and I believe my analysis is accurate. It's funny how so many of you resort to ad hominem attacks against me while so few of you have attempted to address the points I've made (props to those who did though).

Like I said, Berra's been putting out industry video parts since '89. He's only 5 years younger than the Gonz. OK so he didn't kick down doors the way Gonz or even Koston did, but he's always managed to stay current with his skating, and there are many who argue that his backside flip is the best in the biz.

for reals dude.  if you think $5k($60K a year) is a modest living you must come from money and grew up spoiled.
i live in NYC, its probably the most expensive place on earth but somehow i've managed to live here for about a 3rd of that with no roommates.
[close]

I'm also curious how one can live with no roommates on $1700 a month in NYC. Section 8? Staten Island?

A $400k mortgage is $2200 a month. And in LA that's a starter home. Plus taxes, plus utilities, plus maintenance... you're looking at more like $2500 a month, easily. If you're a grown-ass man you want a decent ride. You're looking at $400 a month in payments plus at least $100 a month in insurance, and maybe $150 in gas, so we're up to $3,150 now. Might be smart to put $350 a month into investments or a 401k so we're at $3500 a month. Food—$125 a week on groceries, which brings us to $4k. Take a lady out to a restaurant once or twice a week at $50 to $100 at a time (if you're going cheap) and we're at $4,500. Like to party? I'm sure many Pals know it's easy to drop $100 at the club, so there goes the rest of your cash for the month. I haven't even factored in clothing or shoes, which most industry dudes get for free (but still buy on their own anyway).

Insult me all you want—that just shows your frustration at your inability to counter my argument. The fact is Berra has been putting out quality vid parts for 20 years and with his solid style and perfect flick Berra still to this day manages to look like a young man when he skates. The Gonz couldn't keep up and threw in the towel to become Simon Woodstock on steroids when it became apparent he wouldn't be able to shake off mob foot.

Well my good buddy best Dallas, let's now have a discussion not from out of our assholes but out of our lives. Let us discuss living modestly in the LAC and the expenses that actually occur here.
i live in claremont which is part of la county, california. A modest town east of the greater city.
my rent is $450 plus $350 in bills (elect, phone, interwebs, foods) my modest car is a ford focus which is $180 a month plus $150 to insure it. I put $100 away a month into my certificate of deposit account with firestone, as well as odds and ends change into my obama jar at home if you would like to include that. My girlfriend, skateboarding habit, and upkeep on my bike take up an additional $250 a month roughly so lets get that on the list too. Like the majority of us here on slap i don't "club it" because i choose not to be a faggot, but to be fair and relate to the gayocity you just committed with your "club it" ticket, i will put another $100 on there for pub and brew fees.
now according to my calculations that runs to 1580

some people prefer not so perfect flick.... also, berra puts out more footage, but gonz footage is rare, and thats why people like it even more. supply and demand. also, just to throw this in there, gonz may not be able to come through with too much footage anymore considering he has a family, a hobby that consumes lots of time (making art), and a company to run...

West 49 is the worst man. it put every shop in my city out of business except one and thats only cause they sell snowboards there they stay in business.

I think the main beef was Steve was trying to say he was going to help the small shops when really this is just going to kill the small shops.

Well you're obviously sensible enough to live within your means and I commend you for your frugality. But when you're over 30 and your peers are rolling in Benzos, own their own cribs in Hollywood, and order bottle service a few times a week, you tend to set the bar a bit higher for yourself. Remember when Muska was recording Muskabeatz while staying for months at NYC's SoHo Grand? That hotel is like $500 a night. That's $15k a month just on lodgings. If you're "somebody" in the industry there's going to be peer pressure to live larger, and a Ford Focus and an Inland Empire address ain't gonna cut it.

This isn't going to put the small shops out of business..... they already got fucked by mall stores. Mail order has been around for ever. My first board "Steve Cab Bonite" Powell board was bought by mail order in 88-89. I believe that Berrics is trying to catch the eye of the new generation and the.. what would be "mall kids" who are addicted to the web site... and educate them. Show them where they SHOULD be buying there product and who they SHOULD support.... and what is supporting "real" skateboarding.

i feel the same way reading commercial D's "opinions" as i do listening to a bill o'reilly rant.

just to be clear. comparing berra to the gonz is probably the most pitiful thing i have ever heard.

truthfully, i just feel sorry for berra. what a sad thing when you have such a huge success (the berrics) but still worry more about what a couple people on a message board think or say.

when you get beat up by your own teammates for being a kook (berra bitch slapped by jovantae then crying)
you probably are a kook. especially if you start crying and quit afterward (berra quit 101 for birdhouse).

when a decade later your own teammates (dill) call you a kook, their might be something to it.

on another note, felix clearly has given more to skateboarding than danny way (5 more years of "industry parts". he's gotta be better)...

i have nothing to fear but jesse himself.

First off, before you take any Rawbum posts seriously, listen to this shit. He represents everything we are to the realest.

http://www.grimcity.com/raw/RAWBERTSON_GRIMOIRES.mp3

But what he was talking about was the West 49 exclusive Berrics products which caused a stir here in Canada.

I see what you are saying man... like, its not The Berrics' fault if a shop goes out of business. They should have been runnin their business better and keepin up with times right?

A skateboard shop is a mad difficult thing to make lucrative. A lot of dudes open up shops just cause they want to be more involved in skating and is often just a side project and shit. skateboarding economy, clearly shit has hit the fan and no one is making the kind of money that they want to. a lot of dudes who open skate shops also dont have experience runnin a business! so not all blame can be put on one aspect.

from a fan point of view it looks mega greedy but you are tryin to tell us it aint even like that. you guys are just tryin to stay pro and tryin to keep putting out shit for fans in the end you just dont wanna be doing the shit for free (or for a shitty pay anyway). I can't see how this 1 thing is gonna destroy all good shops from here on out but i think its just a major change to the game that the fans werent ready for.

fans shouldnt even worry about this kind of shit in my opinion though... i mean we going to get to see you guys skate more and that is always dope and berrics allows for that... i dont know if i can speak for everyone on this, but it seemed like a big part of what made skating underground or different from other shit was kind of taken away when berrics started gettin big. it made it more like seeing sports highlights every night instead of havin to wait 3 years for your favorite pro to drop a part to get to see somethin from him.

i guess theres pros and cons to both but i can say from a fan point of view that it does make it better because we get to see more shit. the downside being that a lot of pros that are less known are going to fall off the map in a sense... when the big businesses get bigger, the small businesses HAVE to get smaller. so maybe companies like city or traffic or whatever they might have to fold cause they cant keep up. and for the most part it is the bigger companies that are the lame ones. shoe companies are blowing up and it seems like their shoes just get crappier and crappier each year (durability wise). there are a few decent bigger ones but for the most part all the small companies were real cool and gave skateboarding more culture and diversity that the big companies just wont be able to do.

There is always going to be shit like slap or your favorite street spot or some park that is real as fuck not sugar coated in anyway, everyone can still enjoy skating with their friends and whatever that real street o.g. shit straight 94 brooklyn banks shit, but the game has changed lets face it. time to move forward, im still probably not gonna watch the berrics that much cause im sick of it, but i will be stoked when one of my favorite dudes has a banging section or recruited or whatever, ill definitely check that out. it has its place in skating, i guess just not for everyone.

Hey Josh, can't you do switch backside noseblunts? Maybe I am mistaken but I could have sworn I have seen footage or a photo of you doing one.
One thing about this whole Berrics thing regarding Berra, is yes, there was a lot of criticism aimed at him from this board about "fake spots" in parts he has released, and he wasn't looked upon highly. The problem that people have with him that gets him more flack than somebody like Rob Dyrdek, who had a pretty short part in the last alien video and has a tv show, is that Berra seems to get hyperdefensive and hateful in an obsessive way towards this place. Rumor on the street is that he kicked Erik Olsen out of the berrics for working at Slap, he had people who worked for him attempt to sabotage us in some sort of way, and there are a bunch of other sketchy stories that make him come off like a huge prick. Now, maybe this united shit isn't as sketchy as we all think it is, and maybe it is, but at this point, people who post here are not very ready to assume the best from him.
It's cool that you are coming on here and bringing your perspective. I don't know if you are going to change everybody's mind instantly, but its good to hear a level headed response from somebody who is defending all of this. It beats the hell out of "delete the posts and show yourself or I will expose all of your names and addresses to the world!!!!!"
Oh, and you posting here is kind of awkward, considering the amount of recent intense fanning out I have done. Oh well, is what it is. Always been hyped on your skating.
Are you a kook? If you would say this, the answer is “YES”
I quit skating for a time due to piling out

First of all Muska beats fucking sucked. If you think it's cool to try and live up to rich people's standards just to fit in then you're even more of an asshole than I had originally thought... Wait a minute, you're the average American that over-borrows and overspends and ends up fucking yourself just so you can try and fit in with people who probably don't even like you. Fuck a "bottle service". How about you actually hang out with skateboarders rather than coke head bitches and wanna be actors. I promise they're a lot cooler and wont think that you're not hip if don't spend $1500 at the club on Tuesday.

P.S. I hope you and your entire family dies in a horrific car fire.

berrics on some matthew effect type shit

fuuuuuuuuuuuuu

no, but in all seriousness. someone on here linked to the berrics and i saw that they were doing exclusive shit for the shops joining their unified thing, which is chill, and i gained a bit of respect for that.

really, if it wasn't for the whole unified controversy, no one would have been so mad & offended by berra. though he's always seemed like a douche in some way but his skating prior to berrics was dope. he should just keep his mouth shut more often and let more respected people do the talking for him.

as for the berrics. the occasional montage is sick. but i rather wait a while to see a new street part, or see footage from a different park. the whole berrics idea would be much radder if they went out and did tours to local parks or something rather, it would also save them much more money on rent. i know people are doing this already to a certain extent, but no one is constantly putting out footage like the berrics - and thats whats making people go there so often, because theyr constantly updating and not being lazy with the footy they have.

companies and homies could do this so easily, putting out park montages and decent throwaway each week (ex: skatemafia already on it), and just funny clips like the whole wednesdays with reda and text yo self - kids eat that shit up.

theres so much opportunity out there. i should start a skateboard marketing blog... god damn, maybe once im done with my finals.

Trying to talk shit on gonz? get the fuck out of here! Berra is the opposite of "letting his skating do the talking" he's letting his talking do everything.

theres huge difference in pricing between running a print ad which requires paper, ink, distribution, etc, as opposed a simple text listing on any website.  he made the comparison in the 2nd video and i wasn't falling for it then either.  the total combined cost of running a print ad cost 1000 times more than a virtual one.  maybe you know this but what does it cost for DC to print up a paper catalog and mail it out to every account?  now how much does it cost create a PDF file and email it?  its not the same in the slightest and really, it would take the web guy less effort to create a simple text listing than it took me to type this one sentence.

you stated that hes giving everyone a huge discount but in my eyes its the complete opposite.  not because $50 is a lot of money but simply because you're not getting much for your $50.  if someone offered to wash and detail your car for $50 then i took it through a $5 car wash, wouldn't you be like WTF?  because thats what shops would be getting for $50, more or less, nothing.

as far as steve getting hated on.  its a well known fact that haters are always more vocal than the people who give praise here.  that goes for all messageboards in the internet, not just skate ones.  and for every 1 person that says something positive, you'll find 100 people that says something negative.  and thats not even the internet, thats in life.  he being a 36 year old should know this and not take this place or the people who post here seriously.
believe me, i've been getting the business from the pals lately myself but i'm still here and hanging out because i know at the end of the day, it doesn't matter what i said or they said, they'll soon forgive and forget and everyone will go about their lives.  thats how mature grown people handle internet hate.  what they don't do is go on their twitter account and complain about it.

You sir, are the biggest idiot ever.

Goodjob!

for reals dude.  if you think $5k($60K a year) is a modest living you must come from money and grew up spoiled.
i live in NYC, its probably the most expensive place on earth but somehow i've managed to live here for about a 3rd of that with no roommates.
[close]
I'm also curious how one can live with no roommates on $1700 a month in NYC. Section 8? Staten Island?

because i don't party like it 1999!  nah, i live my life based on the things i need and not the things i want.  this allows me to have free time to post on slap, skate, and enjoy my life.  its either that or turn into a drone again and pretend i'm happy because i have more money than the next guy.  money doesn't buy happiness, its just makes things easier but you gotta remember, nothing worth doing is ever easy.

what the hell is section 8?  welfare?  unemployment?  sorry my dude, i'd rather that money go to people who actually need it.  i'm an able bodied male that can earn his own keep.  i live in uptown manhattan, washington heights and  have a 2 bedroom all to myself.  i don't need to live it up like johnny cool guy so i can impress people with a downtown address.  the only person opinion of me thats ever mattered is my own.

I want to reply to this......
Your post was true a few years ago.... but now big web site advertising is a better bang for your buck. You would be dumb founded if i told you how much a 1x1 inch square of ad space is on the transworld site. The only reason i know is because DC was paying for it...... and its over 3x's what a full page spread costs in the mag.

Gipper....
I can "sort of" do switch back nose blunts. Specific ledges.... end to end... i can't slide them very long.... and i can't do them from the side.
You, like myself.... love to see real street footage. Actually.. i prefer "city" footy. And thats hard to find these days.
Maybe you should start a blog.... your from Chi, right. That IS the best kept secret in the US. Loop all night after 11pm. Im in those shadows all the time. Silas lives there now too. Lets blow that shit up.

Penis....
Yo... im a fan too, bro!!
My favorite sections so far is.. the Volcom United Nations.. Cody Mac murdered it. PJ's battle Camander... but my real favorites are the Bangin's. Jack Curtain, Eli Reed, Louis "mega pop" T, Weiger....ect.
City is a ill ass company with a ill ass team. Russ is such a "skate gangsta". I can't wait to see his next part.
I really like Traffic too. Jack Saback is so dope. I really wish i could see more of Rich, Jack, and Rick.

commercial douche, people don’t constructively respond to your opinions for the same reason they don’t constructively respond to homeless crackheads yelling gibberish or autistic kids rubbing their shit on the walls - some people are just too far gone.
