That's just a generic ass "Margon" outsole, popularised by brands like Common Projects or Filling Pieces.
They most likely didn't had enough money to invest in real molds so they just ordered some off-branded cupsoles and called it a day...

and to the dude that said that they never made a good looking shoe - the salem and the harlem
were nice, had the salems and they skated great and were pretty durable too. i also had the mercer (which i think is that same shoe but on a vulc sole) and those were terrible, that suede layer on the toe was too low and tore open after 3 or 4 sessions

I’ve skated some shoes that have what I’m pretty sure are the same soles, claimed to be made in Japan, and they felt great. the states still look better than 95% of other core skate shoes

had some margom soled wings+horns shoes a while back and can confirm they are slippery and heavy as fuck, also the sole having a steel shank inside made them extremely stiff and took a long time to break in for regular wear.

cant imagine any of this being desirable in a skate shoe so lol to whoever greenlit that. the shoes themselves were very comfy however and lasted about 5 years.

I don’t think you getting any of that in here mate. You’re most likely getting the cheap knock-off Margon and not the actual Italian one with steel shanks and stuff…

Yeah had a few bevs last night and wasn't thinking straight, a legit one is like 50 dollars alone and then you'd be looking at a very expensive pair of States...

Cant imagine a knock off being any better for skating, probably worse.

You got that right! One of the best shoes I've ever skated. Definitely the most commented on shoe from strangers I've owned since the OG Stevie Williams in 01. lol   He can think that all he wants. "More Reynolds half cabs for me." haha

Man, I like those States. I get the whole fashion brand knock-off, etc comments but I have to admit they make me laugh a little. Fast fashion has constantly ripped off high fashion which has constantly ripped off skate culture. It's kind of an incestuous cycle.

My only gripe, I wish they would have gone further with the grasshopper vibes and sized up the toe cap and added a strap. Also, I'd love a tan/navy color like the grasshopper:

I kinda agree with this. While that new state shoe does give off grasshopper vibes I'd like to see it a beefier toes cap and in other colorways.. Honestly why can't we nuke Cariama and bring back iPath? Maybe i'm generalizing but I feel like both brands had some sort of similar eco-friendly aesthetic. Cariama is still lame though.

yeah, kevin furtado from dekline with help from joe castrucci and josh stewart.

Joe Castrucci and Josh Stewart have been helping out, right?
Yeah. Joe’s not a business partner with me, but he really helped me from the beginning just to really formulate what the brand was going to look like. I gave him an idea of something simple, like this is State, this is the concept of what I want to do, just classic stuff. Strong logos, just keep it real simple but consistent.

And then where Josh fits in, I just felt that those smaller board brands were capturing the attention of people in a way by just being true and honest with the way they were going about it. Josh’s brands do that really well. And I thought, what better way to approach it if this is what I’m trying to accomplish, to really be no frills. We’re a skateboard footwear brand and that’s it. What better way to do it than to work with team riders that are part of that same ethos?

I just spoke with him a lot and he really helped me, in terms of putting pieces together with Ben Gore. We felt like Ben was going to be the glue to talk to everybody else, so he definitely helped on the team side and Joe helped on the look and feel.
