The red ones are also really good looking, even though they're barely different from the port royal ones they did last year.

It's also kinda weird seeing Vans trying to cash in on that early 2000's nostalgia with some of the models posted. I always thought that was considered sort of a flop era for them, and I say that as someone who exclusively skates Vans. But that might just be my anti-nostalgia bias showing.

Yeah if that shoe was in a chill colourway and didn't have that Sears logo and the 3D stripe, I actually would like them a lot more than most stuff Vans is putting out.

But then again it wouldn't even really be the same shoe. And kids do love that nasty 2000s shit right now. All those crazy puffy Adidas and all that stuff.

But that Vans cupsole that's on these and the Fairlanes is actually so good. I know I've said it before on here but it's true. Honestly surprised they don't push the Fairlane harder or make better use of that sole. It's kinda perfect. @McBrandt is right, they should just re-release the Lo Cab. They have the sole already, the dude still rides for Vans, it's part of their heritage. I would skate it for sure.

Nah you're absolutely right it was. Their team at the time was mostly older riders until they got Rowley, who really popularized the brand before Greco and others got on. Rowley got on I believe in 2001, so this embarrassing Vans redux is actually their late 90's skate/early 00's bargain store line.

Even then you saw some people wear Half Cabs (I had them when I couldn't get iPath Grasshoppers) and the wannabe punk kids wore Rowleys, but I don't remember seeing the other shoes much until like 2006-2008 when people like Dylan skated Slip Ons and skating old skools became cool/was fashionable.

Rowley's first shoe came out in 99 - hence the 66/99 on the heel of every Rowley classic

I can see people wearing these playing the Tekken 2 demo and leering at the tomb raider display.

If they are built like the 1997ish shoes I'm remembering pretty much all puffyness was added by the wearer by lacing loosely and sticking something under the tounge

There's 8 new colours of that Speed shoe in the Spring/Summer 2024 Lifestyle catalog, mostly plain colours. And the tongue has the oval logo like on the Fairlanes, so a little bit better.

The tongues do look super puffy though.

The more I see this shoe, the more I like it. Never been into DC that much but those hit a certain Rick Howard spot that works.

I don't get why they don't just do a forest green Fairlane with a white sole and an all black Fairlane instead of that. That new design on the Fairlane sole feels like a 'retro inspired' design made by a zoomer and/or non-skater who wasn't there. I could be wrong and that could actually be an old Vans model, but I don't think so. They've got a 1994-style sole on a 2000-style upper. There's also no reason for that shoe to have oval laces other than the fact that Dunks have oval laces. Only round laces really work with those lace protection tunnel eyelets (don't know what those are actually called) - other ones get all twisted and fucked up. The Lo Cab that Watson posted is the chunky cupsole that Vans is trying to make, but they unfortunately don't realize that.

Attention all planets of the Solar Federation. The early 2000s revival has assumed control. Resistance is futile.

Early 2000s, you guys kidding me? These are mid '90s aimless years Vans revivals, not the early 2000s OG Rowley shoe era.

omar hassan 2s were also sick, i bought them at the local department store in the shoe section. they came without a box, only had a tag hanging from the top lacehole.

EDIT: trying to post a pic of the shoe, but it just won't show the picture, no idea what's wrong with the url

It's funny for years those were the shoes I'd show people who had no idea what vans used to look like. Like vans didn't just make the shoes we like from 96-06 is was mostly insane designs and you were lucky to even find a classic. Now yeah fuck it I'd give em a go. Or the Mingus 2

I first moved to Japan in Feb 2000 and didn’t see the ad for the first 3 colorways of Rowley 1’s until after I moved here, but there may have been a time lag with distro back then… either way, I am maintaining that he got that shoe mocked up and released very quickly because the pro series (like those Willy santos runners some of you are discussing) was still in full force at the time.

From what I can tell first ad for the shoe is mid 2000

Well like Rothdigga says about Tiago/NB#, you can kinda start designing something with someone in mind if you know they’re going to make the move.   I think the 1010 came out pretty close to his official announcement.  Reynolds Pro will take longer to come out bc it was an abrupt deal.

I can only imagine the mayhem that is going to happen when Reynolds shoe drops
Sir, I'm going to politely, but firmly, ask you and your common sense to leave this establishment.

these are beautiful

The red ones are also really good looking, even though they're barely different from the port royal ones they did last year.

It's also kinda weird seeing Vans trying to cash in on that early 2000's nostalgia with some of the models posted. I always thought that was considered sort of a flop era for them, and I say that as someone who exclusively skates Vans. But that might just be my anti-nostalgia bias showing.

Rowley got on in 99 but his shoe definitely didn’t come out that year, my guesstimation is mid - late 2000, or at least that’s when I got my first pair. He was skating in eras for a minute!
If vans want to rehash/ cash in they should look no further than the pro series line imho, I really liked those tech designs

A quick google says the shoe came out in 99

that’s crazy then, he must have designed that model so quickly, because I said, most of his first ads were just him skating in eras and I don’t remember seeing that in 98!
My fav vans tech shoe is the monk (or maybe monk ii?) Scott Bourne made them look so good

I think it's Rowley started wearing vans in 99.

He has a whole interview shot in vans the month after they published he was on so he was probably already sorting something out months before then. Maybe takes less time when using a standard vulc sole too.
