The red ones are also really good looking, even though they're barely different from the port royal ones they did last year.
It's also kinda weird seeing Vans trying to cash in on that early 2000's nostalgia with some of the models posted. I always thought that was considered sort of a flop era for them, and I say that as someone who exclusively skates Vans. But that might just be my anti-nostalgia bias showing.
Nah you're absolutely right it was. Their team at the time was mostly older riders until they got Rowley, who really popularized the brand before Greco and others got on. Rowley got on I believe in 2001, so this embarrassing Vans redux is actually their late 90's skate/early 00's bargain store line.
Even then you saw some people wear Half Cabs (I had them when I couldn't get iPath Grasshoppers) and the wannabe punk kids wore Rowleys, but I don't remember seeing the other shoes much until like 2006-2008 when people like Dylan skated Slip Ons and skating old skools became cool/was fashionable.
Rowley's first shoe came out in 99 - hence the 66/99 on the heel of every Rowley classic
Rowley got on in 99 but his shoe definitely didn’t come out that year, my guesstimation is mid - late 2000, or at least that’s when I got my first pair. He was skating in eras for a minute!
If vans want to rehash/ cash in they should look no further than the pro series line imho, I really liked those tech designs
A quick google says the shoe came out in 99
that’s crazy then, he must have designed that model so quickly, because I said, most of his first ads were just him skating in eras and I don’t remember seeing that in 98!
I first moved to Japan in Feb 2000 and didn’t see the ad for the first 3 colorways of Rowley 1’s until after I moved here, but there may have been a time lag with distro back then… either way, I am maintaining that he got that shoe mocked up and released very quickly because the pro series (like those Willy santos runners some of you are discussing) was still in full force at the time.
My fav vans tech shoe is the monk (or maybe monk ii?) Scott Bourne made them look so good
