While i did enjoy squid game 2, what the fuck was that ending? All these years just to give us a half-season?

The Offer is still by far the best show I've watched since True Detective season 1. Need a replacement but trying to avoid starting Succession unless it's truly worthwhile
[close]

Well liking the Offer THAT much makes it really hard to pin you down, but personally Succession beats it every day of the week.   But, if you want Mafia/crime family + movies, the Get Shorty show was amazing even if it seemed like it ended abruptly in S3.   Industry is really good.   Once it gets going, it masters tension and stress on a Hidden Gems level

I probably watch only one or two series a year these days but yea the offer absolutely hit the spot, even my mom stayed up all night watching it.  That Get Shorty series sounds fun and never heard about it. Gonna give that a watch and I think it's about time I start Succession too. Appreciate the recs

Oh ok gotcha.   Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed it too.   You probably never heard of Get Shorty bc it was on the Epix channel

I want to clarify that I did not intend to come off as "galaxy brained" for watching Squid Game 2 with the original audio. I just feel that dubs tend to do shows like this a disservice and find that you get more emphasis on emotion with the original audio. I can see why it wouldn't hit for y'all the same way twice and I'm not going to act "holier than thou" or like I'm smarter than anyone for liking it.

But, I did enjoy it and am looking forward to a conclusion. Maybe it's just the ongoing story has me craving some sort of closure, idk.

I totally get it.  I’m definitely going to finish this series out.   But I’ve tried subbing other Korean shows that some of the other streamers have imported (not K-Dramas, more high concept stuff like Squid Games ) and I’ve just found the acting so heightened in all the side characters compared to what I see in movies from the top shelf Korean directors, but maybe those guys are just on another level the way Cuaron, Innaritu, and Del Toro are in Mexico

RE: Dubs vs Subs
I watch everything in the native language if its available, I cant get past mouth moving different to the dialogue.  Im not one to hate on dubbing, but for the most part it's always been terrible for me.  A lot of old Jackie Chan movies are dubbed and they're kinda bad which kills watching his old movies for me oftentimes.

One thing I really enjoy about subs is they will include stuff you normally don't hear that is relevant to the plot.

in Deuce Bigalow, you HEAR someone using the restroom
but the subs say

Oh I agree on bad dubbing, but it’s a bit more sophisticated than these days.   I used to have to make sure dialogue matched the mouths, but I think these days they’re starting to use AI to alter the actors mouths to literally match, which is bleak

Another bad thing about dubs and why I always watch shows in the native language is that not only does the mouth not move with the sounds but your using a completely different actor that’s probably not nearly as good as the one they chose for the movie . So a lot of times the voice acting is way over the top or exaggerated and just sounds laughable to me.

New Wallace and Gromit is alright. I wouldn't put it on for myself but if you need to put something on for kids you prob won't want to focus the tv. (I guess assuming you don't hate Wallace and Gromit or something)

The x files is still really good 30 years later. Slight annoyance there are movies that are part of it tho

So considering Studio Ghibli dubs use A-List American actors, do people watch those as subs or dubs?

I usually prefer subtitles to dubs but you’re right about Ghibli doing it right. Princess Mononoke had Billy Crudup, Claire Danes, Keith David, and Gillian Anderson as voice actors and they were great.

Thing is you have no actual way of knowing if the native language acting is even good or not. Think about how many movies have dogshit acting in english and it's probably the same for other languages.

Anyway just found out last place I could actually go and get DVDs near me is gone so I guess make sure you get all the stuff you want while there's still some places that aren't completely price gouging

Watched The Substance over the weekend.  Wild movie.. a bit over-directed and it really beats you over the head with the messaging, but did not disappoint in the body-horror.  Had an 80's gross-out vibe that I loved. I saw a review ahead of time that compared it to Society and that is pretty spot on.

I actually love the dubbing gang that did all the Shaw Brothers movies back in the day. Those stilted mid-Atlantic accents are like a warm blanket for me.

None of that stuff (or the early Jackie movies) was shot in sync sound - it was all dubbed even in the original language and I’d rather hear the iconic dub than listen to the Venoms in Mandarin. Jackie did his own dubbing after a certain point so you do get a good vocal performance IF you are listening to the Cantonese dub (the Mandarin dubs are still shit). I’m generally pro-subtitles for everything and Kung Fu movies beyond the early era.

That said, you only get the awesome “Beat It” ripoff soundtrack for the Benny The Jet Wheels on Meals fight if you have the first Golden Harvest dub.

Most of the Disney Ghibli dubs are excellent. There is occasionally a celebrity voice that isn’t a good fit (Christian Bale was oddly bad in Boy and the Heron) but overall I don’t have a preference between dubs and subs with those. A lot of other anime has terrible dubbing and wonky translations.

Italian films from the 50s-70s did the same thing. I think the reasoning there was two-fold. First off, you can cast a mostly Italian crew and bring in an English speaking star or relative (eg. Tisa Farrow) and have everybody do the script phonetically and fix it in the dub. Conversely, you get a bigger International audience if you can dub the movie in the market's language. This is why the Dollars Trilogy has a kind of dubby quality (see Primus' Spaghetti Western) or why the soundtrack for any version you see of a Dario Argento movie always feels slightly off.

Disney's contribution is a wash to me. The Ghibli dubs have been consistently good but they got first when reissuing classic HK 80s stuff and reediting Supercop was disrespectful.

I have only seen the dubbed Mononoke when it came out in theaters in 99-00, it was fine for me at the time.  My Japanese is decent so I usually always go subs for all of my anime choices.   I'm not the biggest Ghibli fan...I do fuck with their older 80s stuff like Nausicaa and Totoro

Edit:  I binged The Bear over the weekend and loved most of it...some of the season 3 themes were kind of a miss for me.  The Chicago vibe was great and dug a lot of personal developments growths in season 2...FX knocked another one out the park with that show

Was surprised no one had mentioned it yet.  Was planning on watching it eventually (just finished 3 body problem) with the assumption it was trying to be a Taylor Sheridan show but hopefully without all his gimmicks and sketchy proclivities

I think if anything, it wants to be a Cormac McCarthy series.

My wife just watched A Man on the Onside without me and she loved it. Might have to check it out.

I checked this show out after your post and I agree its legit good...

Kinda want more of the covid back story from the main character...they hinted at it but not sure its the focus of the show, but I wouldn't mind an exercised reminder of how fucked hospitals were during peak covid deaths.

I feel like we're definitely going to get more of that back story. I don't think they would throw it in there if we weren't, especially with the other allusions about his mentor dying from covid while in his care.

I think that it might be way too much actually medical knowledge for the average person who's maybe looking for a new Grey's Anatomy, but for people like me, it's a breath of fresh air to see medicine depicted and explained in an accurate way.

I think it’s interesting they structured the show as being one day in their shift.   Also, my old ass remembers the first ep of ER when Noah Wyle was the young, fresh faced doctor.

If you want a funny medical show, St Denis isn’t the best thing around but I liked Superstore and American Auto a lot, so I have plenty of good will towards it.

Sirens is my go to for this. Medically not great, but it absolutely nails the general culture of EMS.

Nice I remember that.  I was more recommending it as a current show bc if I was going to recommend any medical show, the UK or HBO version of Getting On set in Extended Care Cut would be what I would put forth.   My mom worked in wound care  /geriatric physical therapy , so it’s tangential to a world I grew up around.   They also have the same issue as in the first ep of Pitt of having a patient no one can understand the language of but it’s handled much more adeptly

Also, Pitt really fascinated me to see the automated chest compression machine in the first ep.   Hadn’t heard of it before and curious to see when they’re actually using it or not since it hasn’t reappeared
