I'm having a bit of wheel madness lately. I was on 56mmclassics the last 2 years and they wore down nicely but I decided to swap them out when they were around 50mm. I am on 58mm conical fulls now and I find some of my tricks are just suffering. I think what I'm looking for now is worn down classic. Would 54mm radials or og classic be the answer?
Yes a 54 mm Radial wheel is much like a nicely worn down Classic that was 56 or 58 mm, as both those wheels are just a little wider and not too much more in overall dimensions when they are worn down. I have a lot of the 56 and 58 mm Classics that are now down to around 50, 52, 53, one set even 54 mm still and they widen out nicely and still feel good to ride.
Regular Radials are almost the same width as Conical Fulls, only with a rounder side wall, rather than a cut away side wall and sharper edge when worn down, so even if you did get a bigger Radial - 55, or 56 mm, it would still be a bit easier to get in and out of things, without going too wide like the Radial Full.
OG Classics are more narrow for the same diameters, so although you would also get a smaller wheel with a wider surface right away, they get sharper as they wear down too, which may or may not be what you want. Some people really like them for a number of reasons, eg thinner, lighter.
If you can have a look at the wheel options in person, it might make it easier to choose though, but if not, then regular Radials might be the closest to what you want.
