Wes kremer. this thread isn't an insult to these dudes, just facts. It's interesting to see which pros had to overcome more shit to make it. I personally give no fucks if you're a pro skater who grew up wealthy, good for you. But you can't honestly say money doesn't matter because statistically, people who grow up with a lot of money are so much more likely to be successful it's ridiculous. Another question this raises is would you guys think certain pros were as cool as you thought if they had to whore themselves out with wack sponsors? People shit on Nyjah for the monster sponsorship but the dude is just trying to stack as much paper as possible, while someone like Riley Hawk will NEVER have to pick up a sponsor that might hurt his raw dude image because he was born rich. Is one of those scenarios really more deplorable than the other? No offense to either because they're both great skaters. But then again Kalis turned down an energy drink sponsorship because he didn't believe in it, so does that make Kalis a better person than Nyjah or does it mean they have different values?
Are we forgetting about Asphalt Yacht Club????? Anyway, that Ed Duff guy or whatever his name is in the new Zero video is well off. His dad and uncles own a very successful electrical contracting company, whatever that even is.

i didn't call him spoiled, i said he was the son of a rich man. so were the menendez brothers. and bin laden.
Interesting comparison. Maybe Rodney hasn't been caught yet.
Like Daewon said: if skateboarding is a ten story building, Rodney is on eleventh floor.

I think it makes sense for more young skaters to be from backgrounds of some wealth or not struggling financially. The cost of skating is pretty high when you consider how quick you go though shoes, boards, clothes. Skateboarding is still cheaper than snowboarding but something like soccer wouldn't cost as much. Also skaters get hurt a lot and the medical bills for someone who has had say 3 broken wrists and other xrays could really add up.

Cory Kennedy was one on the richer side, and so was Daniel Espinoza.

Apples is well off, from a rich suburb of Toronto and his folks now live in the Caymen Islands. Still who really cares, the guy has one of the sickest style ever.

RB Umali, the Zoo filmer came from a pretty well to do family in Houston, when he became the Zoo filmer he had actually moved to New York to go to NYU film school. Jeff Taylor is also from a pretty well off family, knowing the nature of Houston i would think a lot of the skaters from there are from well off familys, not saying there isn't a lot of people living very gutter there also. I met Brian Del Torre when he was young and it seemed like he was from a rich family, but i'm just guessing on that one, he definitely is one of those kids that was raised to be a pro skater though.

looks like most allegations are new gen skaters. meaning if money was never tight i'd doubt they'd have ever skated seriously when it wasn't mainstream in the mid to early 90's. because that was losers that didn't fit in or didn't play organized sports did. or their parents wouldn't have tolerated them paying their dues at the mercy of hostile vibing.

the only thing that really matters respect wise is if someone made it on their own, and didn't have their parents floating them rent, support etc while everyone else had to s the man's d 40hrs a week to afford to live where the industry is. because that balancing act ain't easy and i respect anyone that has risen amongst it.

I thought I read he was dirt poor growing up and that Beasley neighborhood or whatever was kinda dodgy.

Yeah, Beasley is in downtown Hamilton which is pretty grimy, but he grew up in Oakville/Burlington which are both well off suburbs. I could be wrong though.

woodward isn't for the mega rich...I know a few kids who went there whos parents were carpenters, gardeners, house cleaners....their parents just loved the hell out of their kids and wanted to provide more for them than their own parents did.

....still, a pretty big waste of money.
sanch dont be mad because your wife used to clean my mansion
