Smaller decks making a comeback?
« on: March 09, 2016, 01:06:53 AM »
Apparently quite a few pros ride smaller wood (7.75ish). And I'm seeing them more in shops. They died out for a bit, at least to my knowledge.

History and trends tend to repeat themselves. I wouldn't be surprised if they made a big comeback sometime in the future.

What?
Tranny: 8.4 and up
Tech: 8.25 and down
Most people: 8.18 to 8.4

Where do you live where tech guys skate above 9?

Also, why is this in photos/video? There are no photos or videos

7.75 never left.  I still ride it and prefer it over 8's.  It was never too hard to find in shops, but always readily available online.  It's about time smaller decks made a comeback.

They never went away? Plenty of Pros rock'em, Prod, Song, blahddy blah...there certainly was a recent wave of bigger boards that I feel stemmed from Deathwish/Bakers popularity a few years back.

8.25 for the rest of my life. everytime i go down to 8.1 or up to 8.38/8.5 something feels off

I try and size up and down all the time and eventually go back to an NHS 8.2 or some other brands 8.25". The NHS 8.2" is such a sick shape/combo of dimensions.

303 skateshop in Denver has a very limited selection of boards smaller than 8.25

i think this is a valid question.  there definitely has been talk of pros skating slimmer boards recently.

to spite the elitism of wide boards i tried an 8.00 recently.  i still prefer 8.2

so yeah, i would prefer if the market toned it down a bit

Dammit! I skate a 7.75 for 20+ years and finally decide to go up to an 8.0 and now skinny boards are in fashion?

I have ocd when it comes to my board sizes, always have. I rode 7.5, then 7.75, then an 8. I been skating an 8 for about 8 years maybe? I did stop skating for 3 years during that time though. Middle schoolers at my park are riding like 8.25 or 8.5s and i feel like a wimp when im just there with an 8

Penny boards were hot for awhile, street boards have always been pretty wide. Not like vert skaters were riding 7.5 in their heyday, my first deck was a 8" Billy Pepper element way too big for my grind kings.

You will notice noone can 5-0 or nosegrind a roundbar with 149's

Actually there was a time when vert skaters had to go sub 8 with tiny wheels.

any size between 7.5-7.8 is good. a little harder to find some 7.75s in shops, but they're out there. Smaller decks never left

Its just akward till ya get warmed up and then no big deal.

One time my grampa was trying to be nice and bought me this daewon board.

No idea of the dimensions at the time but that board turned out to be fun as fuck! It was so fuckin small hahaha

I skated 8 for a long time... about two years ago I moved down to 7.875 and have loved it. Small decks never left.

i skated 7.75s for probably a good 8 years or so. i started skating 8s when my friend was getting hooked up by this company that i think is out of business now, but i would buy boards from him for cheap and he skated 8s. been on 8s and the occasional 8.125 for probably 5 years now. it wasnt much of a difference going up, but i dont think i could go back down. my brother has a 7.75 and it just feels weird skating that now.

what i thought was weird is that when i first started skating in the early 2000s, 8s were big and anything over 8.25 was massive. then starting in the early 2010's it seemed like 8s were the smallest decks most companies would run, with a few 7.75s here and there, and kids all wanted to skate 8.5s.

I've preferred 7 5/8" / 7.625/ 7.63 since around 1998 and still do.

Weird to me that when boards were small, pants were big, shoes were big

Boards got big again = tiny pants / tiny shoes :-S

I've been trying a few 8s and 8.25s here n there (only in the last 2 years) and I'm not really into them.
I just prefer smaller boards.

You must have really short legs, Welsh looked ridiculous in all his earlier footage skating those tiny decks

I've always thought Chopper had the coolest heroin pro board graphics, but they're always 8> so I never cop… It'd be fun to get one, some 139s and 50mms to fuck around on, my double flips would be popping haha.

What? I've seen these done many many times. I thought 149s were the standard. The only dudes I see that skate 139s are either small kids or dudes skating lows, who probably only skate 139s because they don't make 149 lows (which would probably suck anyways).

Like most people that starting skating the early 2000s 7.5 was pretty standard. Its honestly how i feel i was able to learned most flip tricks growing up. I'm between 8.5 and 8.25 and don't have much issue with flip tricks, like if i am really trying. I recently stepped on a 7.75 and it felt so weird. Like doing tailslides felt weird that i couldn't relax my foot on the tail like i would with a bigger board, almost like i was trying to be on the tip of my toes the whole time. Has anybody had that issue when sizing down?
