If you Google the reviews so far critics like the movie. What I think is going on is Jonah Hill is straight up trolling, and you guys are taking the bait, just let it go. If the movie had a sci-fi twist or something I'd be all into it...but the plot is basically a 13 year old with a dysfunctional broken home, meets his skater friends, loses his virginity, and grows up.
I remember when Kids came out my friends and I didn't glorify it because skating all day with your friends, smoking blunts, drinking 40's, chasing girls, cracking jokes, house parties, etc is what every teenage skater did back in the day.
So this movie mid 90s is about yourself than just live the life in reality and skip the movie, or watch it once, whatever.

My biggest issue is that he "used to skate" and has only entered skateboarding again to make sure his movie gets a good reception.
I know people bashed lil wayne a ton when he came in but he's actually skateboarding and seems to like it. He films stuff, even if its shit. He builds parks and goes out skating with skateboarders.
That one Kyle dude on SNL seems to actually skate too, even if he's not very good and hangs out with Richie Jackson.
There's obviously no old photos/footage of jonah hill skateboarding. Why isn't there any new stuff? Oh right he watched tyshawn do a big flip in the Adidas video, totally means he's a skateboarder right? This article is saying we should give him a pass because he was the fat kid who went to the skateshop and spent his mom's money, even if no one talks about him ACTUALLY skating.
He's attempting to sell out a culture that he hasn't been engaged in for like 20 years and we have every right to call it disingenuous.

Can't someone from Illegal Civ just make Jonah do something and then post it to instagram? If Jonah really skated, I find it very hard to believe that he never stepped on a board and rolled around during filming (besides that kickflip sequence).
I'm not even asking for kickflip footage - just roll around and ollie a manhole cover and I'd be appeased

I quit skating for a time due to piling out, and trying to find my way in life. I thought about skating to the point of dreaming about it often. I still followed and loved it as much as I did when I was out there all day everyday. It’s not such a black and white thing as you’d like to believe it is, but you are who you are, and it’s predictable you’d react the way you have here.

If the move is good and it accurately depicts skateboarding rather than make a mockery of it ie Grind, I don't see the issue. He is passionate about skateboarding from what I can tell.
Look at what happened when skateboarders (who are considered legends and have had careers most would dream of) make a movie... We got street dreams. I have a gut feeling that Jonah the Jew will do a better job than Dyrdek and P. Rod did. Doubt he will embarrass the skateboard community like street dreams did.

I still followed and loved it as much as I did when I was out there all day everyday. My situation was a bit more complicated. Back in I wanna say 2008 I did buy a new setup, new shoes, etc, but I injured myself doing a high flatground ollie (of all tricks). I gave it a few days to see if I just pulled a muscle, and sure enough the pain was just as sharp and persistent. I gave it a week, same thing. Month, same thing. So I wrongly assumed it was some sort of hernia, and being uninsured there is no way I would have been able to afford whatever that kind of operation would have cost. So I just figured that was it for me, and that I wouldn't be able to skate again. Until fast forward a few years when a friend convinced me to fuck around on his board. I approached skating again very cautiously under the assumption I could at anytime agitate what I thought was a lingering health issue. However, I was wrong and I must have just been some kind of severe sprain.
In the times in between skating I would have really strange dreams often about visiting the local (which had been closed for years at this point) and all that would be left in the shop were VHS tapes, so I couldn't buy another board, or that every trick I did I would snap my deck. It was some strange self conscious idea manifesting itself in my dreams that I would never be able to skate again without some sort of complication. As dramatic as it sounds waking from those dreams always left me with a sad feeling.
So as I stated, for whatever anyone's reason may be, its not so black and white.

Were he a bonafide skate rat, he would know that skaters are some of the most judgmental and obsessive people on the planet; and should have anticipated that the movie would draw intense scrutiny from people like us.
A good example:
I saw someone with vertical slide marks on their noise and tail and it disgusted me. Those are not from nose or tail slides. Then there are a few horizontal ones way away from the baseplate and it was just a horror show. What are you doing to produce those? Stop whatever it is. I won't even get into 45 degree looking board/lip marks.
What’s funny is that I completely understand what he’s talking about: I’m constantly checking out other people’s slide marks and silently judging them based what I see without even realizing it.

If someone loves skateboarding enough to nerd out on it hardcore, hang out at a shop in their youth enough to get their face on a board, and make a full-length movie all about skating, and has no physical impairment stopping them from skating at all no matter how much they suck...yeah, it's strange that he doesn't even skate a bit nowadays or have any footage of anything. Looks fake, like much of Hollywood.
On the other hand, Hollywood doesn't allow actors to basically play any sports or do any "dangerous" activities while making a movie. They're contractually obligated not to. He seems busy so maybe he's never allowed to, and he wants to take it easy with the little free time he has.
But still...at least roll around once in a while if you love it so much. And if there's no documentation of him skating while making this specific movie, that's pretty odd. Maybe he doesn't realize how showing the public (not just actual skateboarders) that he can ride would garner him more respect? It worked for Steve Nash and Dave Chappelle.

Gip, this may shock you, but: people develop new interests, have demanding careers, can't afford to get injured, don't have a crew to skate with anymore...so many banal but respectable or at least understandable reasons why someone might not skate as much as they could as a kid or young adult. Or, given certain circumstances, at all.
Imagine spending countless hours of your life skating, buying product from local shops, building ramps, and other typical skate rat shit, then getting a bit older and having your priorities change. I honestly don't care how good Jonah is at skating, He made what looks like an interesting movie with actual skaters in it. Seems a hell of a lot better than Thrashin and Gleaming the Cube to me. I know that those movies also featured actual skaters but the kids in this movie are doing their own tricks. No Brony Hawk stunt doubles here.

Gip, this may shock you, but: people develop new interests, have demanding careers, can't afford to get injured, don't have a crew to skate with anymore...so many banal but respectable or at least understandable reasons why someone might not skate as much as they could as a kid or young adult. Or, given certain circumstances, at all.
Imagine spending countless hours of your life skating, buying product from local shops, building ramps, and other typical skate rat shit, then getting a bit older and having your priorities change. Yet you still keep up with videos, industry drama, etc....then some dumb fuck on Slap says you're not allowed to follow along anymore because...?...?Talk about the worst kind of cliquey, cool guy shit skating is unfortunately rife with.
Also--it's not like dudes who post up here and don't skate much are milking a pro career and taking up space for the next generation. No harm AT ALL, unless you have the attitude of some anachronistic 'locals only' twerp.
