Was really excited to see this as the film isn't coming to Australia (that I'm aware of)

Sunny, Lucas Hedges, Olan (while definitely annoying) and Nak were all pretty great.
The main issues I had were:

1) Dialogue - "Don't say thank you, it's gay"

Even though I grew up during the mid 2000s, I have a really hard time imaging someone saying something like that.

2) That girl looked about sixteen, she would not try to hook up with someone who is around 13 at a party?

3) Continuity error with Hedges' necklace in hospital scene

4) Skaters do NOT fuck with skaters who are at that different of a skill level
Y'all really think someone who is getting on Chocolate flow is going to hang around with some kid learning to ollie? Fuck outta here

5) I agree with the comments on Fuckshit's hair, but Piscopo's combed back style wouldn't have flown either

Regardless, the scene with Stevie entering the shop for the first time, and the scene shortly after where he filled up the crew's jug really resonated with me.

6/10 - extra points for including watermelon man
Re:4. Jonah was allowed to hang around the guys from Hot Rod even though he was a young kid who sucked at skating. That's where the idea comes from.

Portrayal of skating aside, the movie as a whole felt really hollow and empty - no plot, no character development, no reason to really care what happened to any of these people - but this scene in particular definitely bugged me. It felt so forced and unbelievable, but I guess that applies to a fair number of aspects of the movie.
The scene after, that split the girls and boys talking about what had happened in the room, was about as close as this movie got to any sort of KIDS correlation. I laughed when Stevie walked away with that girl in slo-mo as Nirvana's cover of "Where did you sleep last night?" played.

Could've been posted in the awkward sexual experiences thread irl.

Went last night with my girlfriend.

It was weird walking into a theatre and fully expecting to see skaters from my town there, like I was walking into a local skate premiere. Sure enough when I was leaving I saw some kid I recognized walking out with his mom. He ironically has a weird nickname we gave him when he was younger.

I cannot ever imagine seeing this with a parent, it would be so uncomfortable. I suppose it depends on how you were raised, but if I went with my dad who never fully excepted or understood me skating, it would suck. We actually sat next to an older couple without kids. Right after the party hookup scene they got up and left the theatre, the lady whispered to us awkwardly, "We can't take this anymore."

The aspect ratio didn't bug me at all, I got used to it after a few minutes. I guess it's cool the whole thing was shot on film, but it wouldn't have made a difference to me if it was shot 16:9 in HD.

A few scenes seemed super drawn out, the intro seemed drawn out. The cops kicking everyone out of courthouse seemed exaggerated.

Nak killed it with the acting, it was cool seeing Donovan in there and Harmony's cameo. I think I recognized the "pro filmer" that walks up and daps up the two pros as Cody Green that films with FA, Vans, etc?

The no character building really bugged me. They pegged the older brother as having issues but never really revealed more into that or anything, kinda just left you guessing. Also when Stevie steals the $80 and takes that hair brush to his leg? I still have no idea what that was about.

Being a vintage nerd, loved seeing all the old clothing and boards. Thought it was cool they even kept the shop boards shape specific to the time period. You can see how awkward and flat the shape of the shop decks were when he's gripping Stevie's free board.

The overuse of the cussing kinda killed me, maybe it's specific to certain crews of that time period, but it really felt like they laid it on too thick. I'm not even overly PC but hearing it non-stop just felt uncomfortable.

Ending sucked, I hated it. Least favorite part of the movie. I think the ending should have been after Nak gave Stevie the pep up talk and they skated off into the distance. The fight scene and drunk driving scene was just so extra and seemed forced to me. Almost felt like they couldn't come up with an ending or ran out of budget.

The cameos and seeing old gear was the highlight for me. Whole movie gets a 5/10.

That entire scene felt like he was trying recreate KIDS, in my opinion. Also thought the use of Watermelon Man was mad corny, but I might be in the minority with that one.

Other than people supporting the movie because it has to do with skateboarding, which makes perfect sense, I don't get the hype from everyone this is the best movie ever. Superbad is waaaaaay better than Mid-90's, same with Wolf of Wall Street. Jonah could have used those scripts to inspire him to write a really amazing movie.

I skimmed through the bootleg version, twice, and shit was unbearable. There was nothing 90's about it at all. The party scene with Watermelon man was super corny and I quickly skipped through the rest of it, to not watch teenage soft porn. Ending was really lame too.

Jonah could have easily written a much better movie. There's something fishy about the whole thing. Recruiting actors from Stoner Park, low budget, not much mainstream advertising, short movie, shitty script...but huge online promotion and talk show interviews in certain niche communities.

I really think "mid 90's" is an example of a celebrity who has enough money to make a "core" skate video through Hollywood, because he couldn't do it when he was younger and it's his dream. Thats why he hooked up with the IC crew because who else is he going to work with?

No joke, I actually watched that.

only made it 20 min had to turn it off....glad I didnt pay for a movie probably would have either fell a sleep pr left the movie...acting and character introduction was pretty boring.  Certain themes played out in skate docs and movies was awesomely cliched ....I dunno looks like a movie for people in their teens or early 20's.

the movie was alright, like a 7/10. i agree some scenes were kinda weird, especially the one when stevie is stealing money from his mom, i have no idea what was he doing afterwards. and then i'm kinda biased because i admire that era of skating but i wasn't even born in the mid 90s so what do i know?

I'm wondering to all the people rating this over a 5/10 what do you think is your favourite movie you've ever seen or what would you rate a 9 or 10/10?

Well I know for sure dudes in the skateshop would not have been soo chill...I grew up in the Bay Area, and most the shops from around san jose to fremont had crews who'd hang out and would just be talking non-stop shit and would not someone just roll up randomly on a session. people at spots claiming shit and not letting people skate...I dunno certain elements of it had its appeal but nothing id say is personally movie worthy

9/10

I loved it. I found the kids really relatable. I had the same bed sheets as sunny. I could see a lot of my own life experience in this. I thought some spots were awkward, but that's probably because there was no narrative.

That's a big question but maybe like We need to talk about Kevin, The Truman Show, Drive

On another note,
this film is being held in relatively high regard within critics not on SLAP
I really hope to see Nak in another role. Whether you liked this or not you can't deny he showed some potential.

Also, I’ll ad the only thing I know about Na-Kel is this and his 9club interview. Kid is fucking talented and has a good head on his shoulders and can go far in skateboarding, but may have a bigger future out of skateboarding
