For the love of GOD, save Joe Pease.
[close]

I wish he got more shine on his skate career. His part in let’s live was way ahead of its time and one of my favorites . I’m gonna go watch now.

Edit: upon rewatch maybe not ahead of its time but definitely just has that pleasantly smooth classic style. And he made that Shove em 5050 on a rail look so easy and good . Beautiful . I’ve been enjoying his insta posts lately .

I'll never forget the feeling that part gave me, first watch. Joe's art is what I actually look forward to seeing when I go on IG. It's been a few days since his last vid, though.

Just spit balling here- We should start a kickstarter to buy the rights to 411vm and give them to chops or some type of curator especial.

Word is that transworld will continue online only. No
more print. A handful of guys are still employed. I believe Pease is one of them.

Oh that’s great news. I’ll
browse it right after I take a look at other great online only publications like Apples and Oranges skateboarding.

I just got this in the mail. Looks like TWS has officially ceased publication. Excited to read Men's Journal though...

Mega sad news. Shoutout to TWS for giving me a free copy of the last issue. You were always my favorite mag.

So no more online content either? Bummer. This leaves Thrasher left of the major mags, right?

It looks like they're still updating the site so maybe they can make the web only thing work?

Looks like the print is obviously discontinued but they're going to try and run it all digital.

A sad day for skateboarding
There was an interview with TK, when he was a plumber. He got asked if he gets recognized on the job and his response was "No. Plumbin in disguise." Everyone on SLAP thought he said "put him in the sky"

The best point I've seen regarding why TWS and Thrasher were considered to be on a different level from the smaller mags is that they actually paid their staff. Paid writers, paid photogs, paid filmers, paid art dept, etc. If your "mag" doesn't pay the people whose work and time go into making your mag - you're definitely not on their level. I guess it's notable that TWS and Thrasher had staff photogs longer than Sports Illustrated did.

I think this is getting at the point of what bums me out the most about print skate media dying. I'm not ready for skate photography to go away. I don't think skaters will stop taking photos of skaters but at this point we're like 40 plus years into a medium. So it's a super mature genre but it's also kind of feeling like an endpoint. Less mags means less venues for photos and I think it's conceivable that skate photos will become a quaint and inessential niche market. I'm not looking forward to that.

Transworld had the best photo staff, and produced the best photo content from staff photographers for a long while. It seems now that most brands have a staff photographer. You'll always need shots for promo, packaging, websites and a bit of social media. I follow Zander Taketomo, who is the staff photographer for adidas and he's always going on trips and shooting. They even give him a budget for film, which seems surprising but obviously Adidas has deep pockets for that.

I will miss photo annuals though. I'm glad I've saved a pile of them.

The worst thing about print dying is that while the photo production has increased immensely, most photos will get buried in social media feeds or simply die as their websites are taken offline. Print, on the other hand, can live on thousands of shelves, storage boxes etc. Same goes for video.

as a mag theyve fallen off really hard but having said that, it blows my mind that it wasnt making money and the print magazine is gone. really really really bummed its gone. i hope the website and the content stays up somehow or is getting archived somewhere by somebody. maybe wayback  machine or something.  pro skateboarding feels like its changing permanently to something else.

they did say they'll have limited edition print runs still. every other month or quarterly would still be enough time to put together a nice mag
