HBO Picks Up Female-Led Skateboarding Comedy Based On Skate Kitchen

HBO has given a six-episode series order to Betty (fka Untitled Skateboarding Project), a skateboarding comedy inspired by Crystal Moselle’s critically acclaimed feature Skate Kitchen, from Moselle and her longtime friend and collaborator, Love co-creator Lesley Arfin. Additionally five actors who starred in the film — Dede Lovelace, Ajani Russell, Moonbear, Rachelle Vinberg and Nina Moran — have been cast as series regulars in the series, which is currently in production in New York City.

Written by Moselle and Arfin, Betty, inspired by Moselle’s 2018 Sundance film, is set against the backdrop of New York City. It will follow a diverse group of young women navigating their lives through the predominantly male oriented world of skateboarding.

According to Variety, HBO has given a straight-to-series order to a new comedy show based on Crystal Moselle’s film Skate Kitchen. The show, which will run fo six, half-hour episodes, is called Betty, and in a weird twist, it sounds more like a sequel or spin-off than some kind of adaptation. The movie was a fictionalized tale based on a real-life all-female skateboarding crew from New York City called Skate Kitchen, and it starred real-life Skate Kitchen member Rachelle Vinberg as aspiring skater Camille.

Vinberg will be reprising her role for HBO’s Betty, alongside Skate Kitchen cast members (and real-life Skate Kitchen crew members) Nina Moran, Moonbear, Dede Lovelace, and Ajani Russell, all of whom will also be reprising their roles from the movie. Moselle, meanwhile, will return to write and direct Betty, so this is being made with pretty much all of the people who originally worked on the movie. Girls writer and Love co-creator Lesley Arfin will also write for Betty, though the Variety story doesn’t say what kind of skateboard experience she has—she does have comedy writing experience at the very least, regardless of if she can land a perfect benihana or not.

I wasn't really interested in watching Skate Kitchen and I don't keep up with the group in general so needless to say I'm not super interested in this either, but I guess it's not for me so it doesn't matter. Good move by HBO nonetheless, hopefully it'll get even more people--girls in particular--to start skating.

Anyway, I hope this is good. I wanted to like Skate Kitchen but having Rachelle Vinberg get a crush on Jayden Smith and fuck up the crew dynamic seemed like the opposite of repping the scene. More like a concession to making a marketable youth oriented product.
