I just got one of these this afternoon as a treat 'cause i had a shitty week and have been working a lot;

I've been in love with headless bass forever, i guess just growing up watching 80s video clips. It's pretty much a purely aesthetic purchase. From what I understand, Riverhead was a Japanese company, well, still is but now they manufacture in the Philippines, but I believe this is made in Japan in the early/mid 80s (the Japanese factory burnt down back in the day and fucked their shit up for a while I think)

It's obviously super light from the lack of body and head, it plays nice too - it's a bit of a trip just having so much neck - it kind of feels like the 3rd fret is the 1st fret (as in, it feels like a stretch to get to the 1st fret and i have found myself a whole step/tone up from where i should be a few times now while just fucking about)

Anyone else got any headless shit or Riverhead knowledge/experience?

Never actually played anything headless (except a Casio Synth guitar) but I used to drool over headless guitars and transparent plastic guitars circa 1985.

A lot of David Gilmour footage from the 80’s and early 90’s shows he was a fan.

Yes! I can remember fawning over transparent guitars in pawn shops as a kid haha.

I have a Casio DG-1 I got for $5.00 at an op shop. Very cool! (very clunky)

yea i got a headless ibanez ehb bass, i really like it but it took a minute to adjust to at first, albeit in the opposite direction, it felt a bit like a short cale. it all depends on where the front strap button is. a typical bass generally has it more or less even with the 12th or 13 fret. the higher the fret the strap button is aligned with the further the nut will be from you. on your bass it obviously can't be aligned at 12 given the body shape. here's a thread on talkbass with people who have the same issue as you.

Traded my Squier Tele that I paid $100 for to a guy for this Squier Jazzmaster.  It looks and sounds pretty sick, but as someone with shorter arms, it’s probably the least comfortable guitar I’ve played yet.  If I can sell or trade for a Jaguar without sinking much more cash in I’d be hyped.

Orange toggle switch is a nice touch. I woulda killed to be able to buy a nice Squire Jazzmaster at one point. It's wild to me that there are multiple options now.

I’m starting to warm up to it, but out of curiosity, I hit up my local music store and sat down with a bunch of different guitars to get a feel for other options.

Not a huge fan of the nearly raw feeling satin finish on most cheap Squier necks.  Tried the Jag and Cyclone, and I think I’m not just an offset guy.  Les Pauls and Gretschs are quality, but maybe a little too beefy and heavy for my tastes.  Oddly enough, I did like how the ES-339 felt, like the heft was fitting for the size but not too much.  Tried the newer Affinity Jr Strat which is a 7/8 scale, and the neck felt really good but body just a touch too small.

Picked up a Fender Player Series Strat, and I’m sure it sounds great, but it didn’t feel $1100cad great.  The one guitar that instantly felt right?  Squier Classic Vibe 60’s Strat.  I’m not even partial to glossy necks, but it just felt cozy all around.  If I can trade or sell the JM, that’s probably what I’m going for.

I sometimes feel like I’m the only person who likes gloss necks. The satin necks on cheaper guitars usually feel like trash to me.

I also think the Classic Vibe consistently punches above its weight class. I’m a proponent of buying the wood you like because the rest of the shit is easy enough to swap.

The Player 2 Series that I’ve played have in all but one case been finished soooo much better than the Player 1s.

Coincidentally, I bought a 339 on Craigslist during the pandemic never having touched one before and it’s now one of my favorite guitars. Also punches way beyond its price range.

It’s also ironic that I have a Strat (that is great as far as Strats go) but I pine for Offsets.

this is the YouTuber I respect most when it comes to high gain amps.
He’s a mother fucker too. He inspired me to buy the gear above. I kinda feel like he’s right about tube amps. I can’t carry them anymore. Tube amps might just be in the studio for me now. :-\

I hope tube amp prices and guitar prices drop a little more. I want a Bassman in 2025

I picked this up as a project guitar and to hopefully slake my Jackson thirst. It was a Guitar Center and Long & McQuade exclusive that is being blown out at just over 200 right now. I found a "used" one in a local shop that had already been set up and traded an old amp to get it to the blow out price. I peeled the plastic off the pickguard. Pretty sure it was new as they're a Jackson dealer and probably couldn't sell it as new because it was meant to be a retailer exclusive.

It's kinda prefect though. About 6.3lbs with a mahogany body and graphite reinforced speed neck. Wish I could get over the fact that it's a bolt on but it plays really nice. Planning to put on Gotoh locking tuners pretty quick and then gonna swap out the pick-ups next month. All off these models have a grounding issue with the plated bushings for the bridge posts so I'm probably gonna have to sand a spot down on the bushings to get rid of the buzz. Eventually, I'm gonna replace all the parts with aftermarket stuff and rewire it. The whole point is to do it all at least once so I can say I at least did it and then maybe I can keep doing it. The pickup rings are metal so those and the string ferrules can stay.

I think I'm gonna put Black Winters in there. At first I was gonna go Rhoads traditional JB/Jazz or Distortions but the JB is too nasal for me a lot of the time and the Distortion breaks up too easy on cleans. On the other hand, I was gonna yank the tone knob and move the volume back so maybe it's dumb to care about cleans. The Distortion and BW sound identical to me under high gain conditions so I guess it will be whatever is cheaper at the time. Right now, that seems to be the BWs.

I will say though, I think there was some rumblings about the foot switches on some of their pedals. I can’t remember exactly what, but the general rule of thumb applies..

If you don’t abuse your pedals, they won’t have issues.

Unless we’re talking Boss. Those things will survive the apocalypse.

Long shot, but if anybody here plays a short scale, non string-through bass and likes flatwound strings hit me up and I'll send them to you. I have a pack I opened and immediately realized I needed a different length.

A nice baritone with humbuckers is better for metal than any 7 or 8 string, IMO. I just started playing my Ibanez baritone again and it makes me wonder why anyone would fuck around with a 7 or 8 string. Baritone is perfect.

anyone have experience building a guitar? is it worth it? ive been hankering for a tele and thinking of doing a partscaster as im pretty particular about aesthetics... must be nitro, dark wood(a nice not orange mahogany or dark rosewood) natural finish body, maple neck but cant be too bright of a maple, etc etc.

just the body alone from warmoth to be made how i like was 5-600 bux.

Have you looked into guitar making classes near you? Right before I read your comment, I happened to be reading the syllabus and materials for a guitar making class in North Hollywood where the assignment is to make a Tele. Class is 5 weeks, cost about 1K and then around 500 for materials, depending on what you want it to look like. Finishing is another class but your intentions get discussed and you get guidance on that if you just wanna finish the thing and get to playing your new guitar. Maybe see if you have something like that you can get into?

I'd also like to learn to do nitro finishes someday but it seems pretty bloody hard and so I have to learn a bunch of other finishing first. I worked for a frame shop for a little while where I was the finisher so I have a healthy respect for how hard nitro is to work with.

Recently bought a PRS SE 22 Hollowbody. Thing's so light and sounds amazing. The action's also set up so nice and low it feels like I'm barely doing anything. Scared as hell to put it in any open tuning though I don't wanna fuck with the tension and bow the neck.
