Trucks Wheelbase Thread
« on: December 20, 2020, 10:22:57 AM »
Got this list from another thread, (username Kneesles)
This is what they said each truck does to the wheelbase of your setup.
Quote

wheelbase relative to trucks

Ace +2.75"
Krux k4 +2.875"
Minilogo +2.875"
Indy cast +3.0"
Indy forged +3.125"
Thunder cast +3.125"
Tensor Alloy +3.125"
krux K5 ~+3.125-3.25" by looking at pics
Thunder Forged +3.18"
Venture cast +3.25"
Venture Forged +3.4-3.5"

This is going by memory but they should be fairly accurate. Please comment with corrections if i am off and ill change them up.
I’m sure corrections need to be made but I found this list super helpful.

Helpful. I’ve been thinking about grabbing some aces’ thinking they would lengthen wheelbase. Now i know

some of these i would take with a grain of salt. i lined up some forged titaniums and cast hollows (indys) the other day, and did not get an extra 1/8th of an inch with the forged plates.

What do you mean lined them up? Did you measure them on a board or just set them next to each other? The tensor, minilogo and krux measurements are accurate as i took those personally bolted to decks with proper use of a tape measure. The last truck wheelbase thread seemed all over the place too. Measurements should be made with trucks bolted to a deck. Take the axle to axle length minus decks wheelbase. Also if using a tape measure, make sure you know how to use one properly. The little bit of give on the end piece (whether your pulling or pushing the tape or doing a combo of both between the 2 measurements) can add up to over 1/16" if your not using it correctly.

i took a board with 14.38 wb with forged titaniums and a board with 14.5 wb with standards (not hollows sorry), stated dimensions that checked out when i measured from center of mounting holes. i lined them up on a tile floor so that the wheels settled into the small groove of the tile, aligning the back axles. visually it was clear the 14.5 board's front axles were still out ahead, how much im not sure, but if it was a full 0.125" they would be aligned in theory. checked from both sides to make sure it wasnt from axles being not centered.

now you could argue its from mounting holes being stretched or pivot cups being smashed, maybe so. i just think its going to be hard to get good measurements off trucks down to a sixteenth of an inch when the axles move and its hard to find the exact dead center of the axle anyway. hence why measurements are a little chaotic in the old thread.

best bet would to drill mounting holes in a 2 by 4 or something, only an inch apart or so, and take it to a shop that would be tolerant of your madness so you could deal with only new trucks. the fact that we are dealing with measuring 14 inches or so just to get an 8th of an inch difference leads to a huge margin for error.

When you get a chance try measuring the axle to axle lengths and report back. I think there is a larger chance of error by using floor tiles and just eyeballing it. I agree that there is going to be small margins of error from worn in softparts but we should be able to get a list together to 1/8" accuracy which would be good enough for our purposes. I also wonder how much different sized hangers affect the measurements for each brand.

I know some people were asking about the different sized trucks, but unless the geometry changed with different versions, eg I would think that any standard Indy truck sizes would have the same + measurement, certainly it seemed that lining up 139, 144, 149, 159 and 169 all are the same, as were a couple of other trucks of the same make and model in different sizes that I had here.

Anyone else able to see between two or more of the same truck - at least you can just put them up against a wall or something as they would have the same baseplates, just longer axles, which don't affect wheelbases in any way.

I talk too much about skateboards.  Sorry.

Could I get this research in APA format? Just kidding, but this would be a cool idea for a research paper. I have been looking into wheelbase and trucks for a while now and have been trying to get what feels right for me after becoming self aware of these factors. This is very helpful, so thank you to everyone posting.

That list doesn’t seem right...I have a set of Indy forged hollows 139’s on a 14.25 and some thunder team 147’s on a 14, and the axles on the two boards line up with each other.

Just for reference, here are the old thread’s measurments. Maybe we can compile a new list of more accurate measurments with this and the newer list posted above
Yes, another truck thread, but this one is the one we wanted to have regarding about how an specific truck affects the WB of our setup.
As Palelight pointed:
"So as an example, if your deck wb is 14.25," and you ride Indy's your true axle to axle wheelbase is 17.25." The distance from the inner bolt hole to the center of the closest axle is added to the overall measurement, in this case, 1.5" per side."

I'll update the list as soon people add info.
Let's start:

Ace 44 (8.38" axle):
+ 2.75"

Film 5.5 (8.25" axle):
+ 2.875"

Independent 149 STD (8.5" axle):
+ 3"

Independent 169 STD (9.125" axle):
+ 3"

Independent 149 forged hollow (8.5" axle):
+ 3.1875"

Krux K4 (8.5" axle):
+ 2.625"

Tensor ATG Aluminium 5.5 (8.25" axle):
+ 3.0625"

Tensor ATG Mag 5.75 (8.5" axle):
+ 3.125

Thunder 149 team edition (8.5" axle):
+ 3.1875"

Thunder Hollow Lights 151 (8.75" axle):
+ 3.25"

Venture standard 5.8 (8.5" axle):
+ 3.25"

Venture 6.1 (8.75" axle):
+ 3.125”

Venture Lights 5.8 (8.5" axle):
+ 3.5"

Venture 5.8 Titanium (8.5" axle):
+ 3.4375

Of course every measurement could be not 100% accurate so if you want to double check you're more than welcome.
Kudos to all the pals who fuel this such as palelight, software and AngryBlackMan ✌️
I’d also like to know where on the axle you are beginning the measurement. Like for instance,  do you measure from the inside end of the axle, the far end, or the absolute center. Although, as someone pointed out, measuring from the center of the axle can be inaccurate because you have to somewhat guess where the exact middle is.

It's from the center and it's perfectly easy to 'guess' the center, this isn't rocket science.

You're either doing something wrong or you have a seriously weird set of indys.

As someone else said if you want to be accurate then account for variables. Use the same deck for every truck and make sure its stated wb is accurate. I like to use a 14" wb just to make it easy. I measure from the front edge of the nose axle to the front edge of the tail axle so I'm not trying to estimate the middle of the axle. Tape measure is fine if you use it right, but i like using a yardstick. Measure on each side and then average them if you get a different number.

Take that number, subtract 14 (or whatever wb you're using) and voila.

Yeah, old thread got jumbled real quick. Different pals submitting conflicting data, some had photos, some didn't. Shit was all over the place. I'd take it all with a grain of salt (even my posts).

Either take the general info on good faith, short to long -> Ace -> Indy -> Thunder -> Venture, or buy em all and have at it. Godspeed.

Left: 458mm
Right: 466mm

(458+466)/2=462 -> /2.54 =18.189"
Deck wheelbase(checked):15"
Seems like my Indy 159 extend the wheelbase by approx 3.19".

I think the titanium axle version looked to have the same as the others on forged baseplates, when I set them up against the counter.

Also it doesn't matter how wide the trucks are, 139, 144, 149, 159 or 169 - they all had the same form when I lined them up to compare, but I don't have 109 or 215 to check against, which I know have different makes to the other regular Stage 11 Indy trucks.

I talk too much about skateboards.  Sorry.

Have to correct this. My pivot cups were completely destroyed. The increased wb was caused by the hanger sitting deeper in the baseplate. Measured again with new pivot cups-> Independent 159 increase wb by ~3.05"

just switched from Indy Stage XI 149 forged hollows to Ace 44 Classics (1st gen; >10 years old) and the wheelbase went down 3/8 or .375 inches. hoping this will compensate for the steep kicks on my Santa Cruz Jake Wooten VX deck. Sucks that I bought the hollows because my Indys were too high but I didn't realize the hollows kicked out the wheelbase, but on a deck with a shorter wheelbase the hollows will be perfect. The cast Stage XIs would be perfect on this deck if the kicks weren't so damn steep, but I think the lower Aces with the shorter wheelbase will hit the sweet spot, can't wait to find out. god let me find the sweet spot so the madness can end and I can stop fucking with my setup while this deck lasts....
