Louis Ck is the goat imo. stav fuckiing rules and so does Joe list. my friend showed me Ralph Barbosa not too long ago. he's sick. can't wait to see more from him.

sam tallent is my favorite currently and probably one of my favs of all time. hes smart, but so goofy. half the time, I can't tell if he wrote what he's saying on stage. he has a special to purchase (worth it) and he also wrote a book. watch any podcast he's ever been on.

just got tickets to take the whole family to Jim Gaffigan. probably the only comedian who is actually funny to me and i'd also feel comfortable taking my 11-15 year old kids to see. his last special had some good roasts of road cyclist, bikers, etc...

100%. Doesn’t matter if you’re from the area (it helps), but, I think it’s the best podcast going. Also, yes, Philly is crushing right now. AYG, Matt and Shane, stuff island (so underrated), and Oral Presentations (Chris wood does book reports. Ex: he reads 1984 and then gives you the cliffs notes).

Chris Wood is the shit, never knew he had a podcast.

Right now I love Jordan Jensen. She’s badass, new to the game, and has respect from many other older comics. Special coming out very soon and I see her having the same fast trajectory as Shane Gillis or Tim Dillon.

I watched fellow skater Mark Normand‘s special on Netflix yesterday. Definitely worth a watch. Some killer, some filler. I like his old timey style. He seems like an autistic guy with Tourette’s.
His take on identity politics making him more racist was pretty bad: Just because it was real easy to pretend not to see race twenty years ago doesn’t mean there was less racism… his holocaust joke was pretty gnarly too (not very funny either IMO). I am German and if you made that joke in Germany you would get sued for sure. It is hard as hell to make a good holocaust joke. Kudos for trying.

My favorite part was the right wing weather report: “… Praise the lord! Now back to you Sugartits“

Free speech in Germany is much more limited by what is called "human dignity" than it is in the US. All these laws were put into place after Nazi German was defeated and the main objective of the Allies was to prevent another fascist dictatorship.

In Germany you can reference the holocaust, but you cannot deny it. In a way racist speech is also punishable by law.
There is a paragraph in the  German Criminal Code (Strafgesetzbuch) called "Volksverhetzung" (Incitement of masses), which limits free speech. Mark Normands joke where he compares the the burned corpses of holocaust victims to old black people with dry skin ("ashy"), could be ruled as "incitement of the masses", because it might be ruled that he "denies or downplays an act committed under the rule of National Socialism". I am shure if he was German and made that joke, he would definitely get cancelled and he would get get sued. If they'd actually be able to commit him of that crime, I don't know. There are similar cases where judges have ruled in favor of freedom of expression/freedom of art.

This is the whole section from the German Criminal Code (Strafgesetzbuch):

Section 130
Incitement of masses

(1) Whoever, in a manner suited to causing a disturbance of the public peace,

1.  incites hatred against a national, racial, religious group or a group defined by their ethnic origin, against sections of the population or individuals on account of their belonging to one of the aforementioned groups or sections of the population, or calls for violent or arbitrary measures against them or

2.  violates the human dignity of others by insulting, maliciously maligning or defaming one of the aforementioned groups, sections of the population or individuals on account of their belonging to one of the aforementioned groups or sections of the population

incurs a penalty of imprisonment for a term of between three months and five years.

(2) Whoever

1.  disseminates content (section 11 (3)) or makes it available to the public, or offers, supplies or makes available to a person under 18 years of age content (section 11 (3)) which

a)  incites hatred against one of the groups referred to in subsection (1) no. 1, sections of the population or individuals on account of their belonging to one of the groups referred to in subsection (1) no. 1, or sections of the population,

b)  calls for violent or arbitrary measures against one of the persons or bodies of persons referred to in letter (a) or

c)  attacks the human dignity of one of the persons or bodies of persons referred to in letter (a) by insulting, maliciously maligning or defaming them, or

2.  produces, purchases, supplies, stocks, offers, advertises or undertakes to import or export content (section 11 (3)) as referred to in no. 1 (a) to (c) in order to use it within the meaning of no. 1 or to facilitate such use by another

incurs a penalty of imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years or a fine.

(3) Whoever publicly or in a meeting approves of, denies or downplays an act committed under the rule of National Socialism of the kind indicated in section 6 (1) of the Code of Crimes against International Law in a manner suited to causing a disturbance of the public peace incurs a penalty of imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years or a fine.

(4) Whoever publicly or in a meeting disturbs the public peace in a manner which violates the dignity of the victims by approving of, glorifying or justifying National Socialist tyranny and arbitrary rule incurs a penalty of imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years or a fine.

(5) Subsection (2) also applies to content (section 11 (3)) as referred to in subsections (3) or (4).

(6) In the cases under subsection (2) no. 1, also in conjunction with subsection (5), the attempt is punishable.

(7) In the cases under subsection (2), also in conjunction with subsections (5) and (6), and in the cases under subsections (3) and (4), section 86 (4) applies accordingly.

You would know better than me edit:(regarding german culture) but I would assume it's easy to prove these are jokes performed for comedy, its purpose is to incite surprise not hatred.

The language of the law gives me the impression there must be a degree of sincerity when talking about the holocaust.

We understand the seriousness of bodies burned, audiences "laugh" when he compares it to the vain concern of dry skin.
It's the vanity being mocked not the deaths.

Could be the same joke he goes for about piles of shoes, the stereotype that black people collect expensive shoes for status / the nazis collected shoes at their death camps.

So I don't think he's sincerely equating the two to downplay the atrocities, he's just using severe juxtaposition with macabre imagery.
I appreciate the depth of your post. Did my take change your perspective on the perceived butt of the joke?

I never thought the butt of the joke were victims of the holocaust or jews. I agree one hundred percent with your perspective. I couldn't have it explained as well as you did. The absurdity of his joke only works, because people are aware of the horros of the holocaust. A bit like in that curb your enthusiasm episode, where a holocaust survivor argues with a guy who's been on the reality show "survivor", about who had it more difficult.

Yes, the holocaust always has to be talked about sincirely in Germany. You do have to remember, though, the holocaust took place here, our grandparents generation organized it, supported it or at the least just tolarated and ignored it.

My local skatepark is next to the European Central Bank. When they decided to build the Bank there, there were alot of debates if it was OK to build it there, because it had been the sight of alot of deportations to nazi death camps during the Third Reich. They ended up building the bank and next to it a small memorial sight to remeber the thousands of local citizens of Frankfurt who were deported to camps from there. It is now basicly a small plaza with marks of train tracks in the ground and some signs. It is a nice little plaza. During Covid people started to meet there for salsa parties. Just a group of middle aged people who tried to keep some distance and dance to salsa music. People noticed them and there were complaints that with their dancing disrespected the victims of the holocaust. This started a debate and in the end it was decided that it was illegal to dance there.

The fact of the holocaust is at the core of modern German identity. There is no way arround the holocaust if you identify yourself as German. Generally most democratically minded Germans try to educate themselves about it and keep the memory of the victims alive and identify with "being a good and enlightened German" that way. Nationalists argue that it is time get over it and find a sense of pride in the nation without "the shame" of the holocaust or they will outright deny it ever happened.

I recently I watched a documentary about Isreali kids being taught about the holocaust and visiting consentration camps. They were confronted with the horrible pictures of all the tortured and starved dead bodies of people from these camps to learn "This is what people did to us". Kids at German schools visit the same concentration camps and see the same image to learn "This is what we did to them".

On a lighter note: Curb your enthusiasm - Survivor vs. Survivor.
