WBSWB Movement (Wide Board Short Wheelbase)
« on: February 03, 2021, 04:24:55 PM »
Wide board + short WB skaters truly are the most oppressed minority

every couple days for the last year or so, i would open my skateshop bookmarks hoping on a new "unicorn", filter by width and wheelbase, and close my phone in disgust in that order.

"you want a small wheelbase? ride an 8, bigfoot!" i can hear these screams in ever waking nightmare.

this thread is for the dozens of us (as the industry sees it) to discuss the dozen of options that are left, experiences with said boards/setups, new developments for the cause, etc. most importantly to put our collective foot down in hopes for wheelbase equality.

(8.5 and up, 14.25 and below)

while cool-guying is a real phenomenon, studies show that 83% of all cool-guying incidents can be attributed to the cool-guyee being an awkward weirdo

starting things off with my current popsicle

scumco deep dish 8.5/31.5/14wb
venture 5.6 w/forged plates
f4 conical full 52mm 101a
swiss super 6
local allen hardware
mob
sb dunk low/adidas tyshawn

havent skated this much yet due to the storm but it might be the steepest shape i have ever owned, from the tail to the concave.

scumco has a 8.75/31.6/14wb as well. if its a deep dish it will be my next popsicle

I’ll be watching this thread.  My last deck was 8.5 with 14.25, currently on a 14.4wb.

I did skate 3 of the 9” Santa Cruz boat shape last year and they all had a 14.25wb.

Wknd Jordan Taylor
Width 8.5
WB 14.25
Indy 149 hollow (at 55mm)
54mm spits

Im not sure about length tail and nose, wknd has been all over the place at times with those depending on season.

While i thought i would have a hard time skating it, it actually feels balanced even with cupsole shoes. Concave is medium compared to my polar 8.25 which was longer and flatter.

Currently still in lockdown id report back when i put more miles with my skating.

midlife crisis.

Early last year Primitive made a Spencer Hamilton 8.62 popsicle with a 14" wb.  I thought it was a typo/too good to be true but I gave it a gamble and bought one. To my surprise, it was a true 14"wb.  Great deck - big nose, big tail and pretty flat concave (it was like riding a late 90's girl deck on steroids).  I pair it with venture 6.1 trucks and bones 54 v1 wheels. During the time I was riding it, I kept scouring the internet for more of them but couldn't find any, so I rode it into the ground.  Then one day, shortly after the first wave of covid lockdowns (april/mayish?) lo and behold the primitive website restocked them and had a 20% off sale to boot, so I bought 4.  Haven't seen them around since but if I do, Im stocking up again. Until then, I got 2 left.

Here is what it looked like
https://shop.ccs.com/primitive-hamilton-dreams-skateboard-deck-8-625

If it doesn't ever come back, I'll probably end up getting a Polar popsicle 8.62 or 8.75.  The wb is longer than I'd prefer but those shapes are pretty good. Before the primitive hamilton, I rode two or three polar 8.75s and one 8.6.  I think the wb on those were 14.38 which was hefty to pop but manageable after getting used to it.  I was riding indy 159 and ace 55 on those.  But the Ventures I'm riding now and that polar 14.38 might be rough...

Deck is definitely going to have a med/steep tail. For tail length probably around 6 5/8"? I don't know yet, gotta draft a shape.

are the boats the equivalent of the creature stumps? want to hear your experience if you remember

I haven’t skated any of the stumps decks but the Dante Cruz decks were great.  Slight taper.  Not full football, think rugby.  They were stiff and steep and skated like a smaller deck.    I skated them with 161s. I started going down in deck size and haven’t bought one since but now I’m on my way back up and I would skate one again.

Anyone skate a short wheelbase with Aces?

Santa Cruz boats

https://youtu.be/G42d4ylWOMQ

This sounds like a really sick shape, but something seems weird about skating a "santa cruz" board being from the opposite side of the country. Anyone else feel this way too?

It was cool that people like Damian Smith, Jake Rupp and Vanik Hacobian rode for them at times and they released some cool footage of them, but I always feel like it was weird that they skated for them in the first place.
