Reccomendations for a cupsole that offers 1010/808 levels of impact protection, or close to it?

id assume the 480 with how pals talk about them here
as soon as these 1010 die (when???), im trying those next
while cool-guying is a real phenomenon, studies show that 83% of all cool-guying incidents can be attributed to the cool-guyee being an awkward weirdo

I found the 600s a bit thin, trying to protect the old knees on run outs/drops. The 440V2 (not suprisngly) aren't it...if I could have found a size in the 1010/808s that fit, I'd be all in.

Seconding the 480, they are tanks.

I tried on a bunch of shoes the past two days and went with a pair or mesh 1010s (10.5) - they were easily the widest looking (not counting the outsole in the top down view) and fitting and they will stretch a tad...maybe 6 months from now.

The AVE 2.0 has such a dainty narrow toe box. It's your typical bball top down view, but pulled from a youth shoe...they look hilarious (they also did not get wider from 10.5 to 11.5 enough to warrant the length increase) bummer as the non-knit look ok.

If the 1010s don't work out I'll bite on the 480s once some new colorways drop.

Went ahead and tried some dunks anyway.  Well that's it, I'm now on the swoosh hypetrain I guess.  They are very nice and they so far seem like they are going to last quite some time.  The heel feels thick/firm which I didn't think I would like but on the board I really dig it.  So far I can't even tell I've been wearing them either.  Tough as hell it seems.

So far my old man bones seem to like them ok as well.  No lower back pain.  Might be hooked.

The Fastbreak has to be one of the best values in skating right now.  Great shoe.  Only got the Alltimers one, in that landmark Cons sale, and have been very happy with mine, especially to get some more boardfeel since I’ve only been in KSL’s of late.

Also have the AS-1 and only really cruise around or ride transition in it now – agree with sentiments here about the durability being oddly spotty in heel area, and that the outsole is excellent!

Fastbreaks are amazing, for like two weeks (nylon ones). They're like a converse 440 mid.

I picked up a couple of pairs of sale Zahba's. One low and one mid. I've been wearing the lows the past two weeks - I skate most days - and my feet and lower legs have been sorer than usual. My feet tend to feel sore initially but that fades throughout the session. My foot doesn't feel constricted, but I initially feel discomfort down the outside of my sole from my mid-foot to the base of my pinky toe. The insole and outsole feel very firm, and maybe they're too firm for my old, tender feet. I was skating Tyshawns, which feel more comfortable, and I wasn't experiencing the pain I am now. Mind you, I've also switched to a new deck and from Thunders to Ventures. The new deck does have more concave and could be part of the problem, if not the primary cause.

What is the best between Etnies Marana and Mc rap lo ? I skated two pairs of Etnies Josl1n, I loved it but impossible to find them in a good color and not too expensive! So I have the choice between these two models! If anyone has tried both, I'm interested in the reviews!

the joslin is inbetween the two, rap will be a little thicker and the marana is slightly slimmer. i think the rap is a better shoe just looking at it, i had the marana years ago and i didn't like it

TTS but a bit snug for me, I could go up a half size easily.

Bought the Etnies Josl1n again, my third pair.. Amazing how perfect these shoes are, in terms of protection, shape, durability and for tricks. I have trouble when I occasionally skate other pairs ahah Do you have a similar pair to recommend ? I hate big “sneaker” style shoes, I like a simple and refined style.

I wear size 10.5 in the Fastbreak mids and size 11 in Dunk lows. If you sign up at Converse, you can get free shipping and free returns (so you can just buy shoes in a range of sizes and return the ones that don't fit or all of them (and hunt elsewhere for deals in your size)).

well, folded my pushing/popping foot the other day on a stupid ollie.  so now my dunks are dead to me.  was about to change them out anyway.

given that no shoe can prevent old man clumsiness is the general consensus that those NB 1010s give the most mid to forefoot protection? i ask b/c i see them on sale for a cheapo price.

I wish the 1010 worked for my feet but I’ve tried twice and couldn’t do it. The arch is too high and there is another lump opposite that and it digs into the other side of my foot. It’s almost like the area directly in front of the heel of the shoe is way too slim on the inside. Going to return them and start the search again. The 440v2 I’m skating have been good to me but not enough that I’m going to quit looking for something better. The 508 Westgate’s were too slim for me also. Might try some 600’s next before looking for something outside of NB.

The consensus on here is that the 808 has the most rigid sole all around. They protect very, very well against blunt impact (primo landings and the like). In my experience no other shoes come very close to that level of protection, but they are way too narrow for my feet and I got pretty bad corns from trying to make them work for too long. If you have rather narrow feet I'd recommend them. They often don't work for wide feet though.

Ah, thanks dude.  When the swelling goes down will see if I can try them on.  I don’t find my feet to be wide or narrow for the most part, other than generally being a size 12.

Broken in 808s are godsend shoes. But they take a while to get there. I enjoyed them since brand new, though.

I'm a 12 too and found the 808s to be very snug in that size. In hindsight I should've sized up, but I was so hyped on the sole that I ignored the fit. And to the shoes' credit, they offered enough support that I could not only keep skating with a pretty gnarly midfoot bruise, but let it heal completely at the same time. I'd wear nothing else if I could make the fit work. I hope they'll do the job for you!

currently deciding between Tyshawn Lows, SB Force 58s, and Lakai Terraces for a good leather cupsole that will last a while. anybody got any insight on which is the most comfy? from what I gather, Tyshawns may be the nicest feeling underfoot.

Are you speaking to the NEW Ty 2?

I've only tried on the Ty 2s but have skated and chilled in force 58s (one suede, one premium/all leather), the Ty is going to be the nicer one compared to the suede F58 for sure. Having not skated the ty 2, just looking at it and standing in it you can tell the sole is much better. The F58s are PP dunks....but if you do get them, get the leather/premium they break in nicely.

If you mean the Ty low/his first shoe, get that one over the force 58s for sure.

currently deciding between a pair of 480's or getting a pair of Cats to skate. Tried both on in the shop and it was really hard to decide between the two, they were both feeling pretty lush.

My last exp with NB# was the 1010 on release and it was way too narrow for my foot and the leather never stretched out enough to feel comfortable.

Any advice pals?

If both shoes felt good, I personally would choose the cheaper one. Can't tell you anything about either of these shoes.

That is the correct answer..however, the cats are new/no one knows (or remembers?) how well they're going to hold up? Cats could very well be cheaper but may not hold up as long as the [potentially] more expansive but longer lasting 480s?

Funny you say that... Being in Australia, the Cats are actually more expensive - only by $10. I saw in the Ipath Containment thread somebody posted results of their effort so far and it doesn't seem all too bad. The nostalgia factor is heavy.

I have to say what made it even harder is for two suede shoe options, both felt really nice in hand. I haven't had a pair of suede NB # before (I do love the suede on my older 990v3's) and I was surprised to see how nice they felt comparatively.

My old man knees are the big problem for me right now, which is why I'm hesitant to pull the trigger.

I can (reasonably) assume that the 480's will be better on my knees, but I'm sure throwing on a set of F4 93D's on my setup would be just as good an alternative to reducing impact.
