Pretty sure an ace hollow bolt weighs the same as a Shorty's bolt

The big ass head on it kinda negates the gimmick of it being light, I don't understand the hollow ace bolts at all.

The shortys small bolts aren’t for everyone either though and shortys stick up a bit which is sort of annoying…

Yeah, it was just shared that they do weigh the same as Shorty Lights. So, you are getting added functionality at the same weight as the lightest hardware Shortys offers.

But fwiw, I just weighed my Pig Allen bolts and they came in at 1g heavier than Ace Hollow or Shorty Lights and with the nuts, 41.1g so it’s pretty clear now that the biggest weight savings for the people who care comes from the smaller nuts on Shortys.

Pig Allen holos 7/8" bolts

Pig w/ nuts (one of them is a Shorty nut)

So, the people running Ace Hollows with Shorty nuts are getting the added features they want at the lowest weight so whatever that is worth to people, there you go.

Saving weight on bolts is a skate industry psy-op to get you to buy more hardware.
If I’m dead tomorrow, you’ll know who to blame.

I wanna play you in a game of SKATE for the right to continue talking shit on me… You think you got me?

Haha, I agree that most the weight differences from any skateboard parts are not going to make a huge difference. In the case of hardware, we are talking a maximum of 6-7g saved over a whole set. But at least knowing those data points can help people decide for themselves. Like I said earlier, I never cared about hardware as long as they fit. If some have features that make them easier to use or work better, cool. Is it worth a couple bucks more? You decide for yourself. If saving weight is a big deal to you, now you know that whatever hardware you choose, it’s a +-of about 5-7g.

I hate them big ol heads on Indy/ace/most generic hardware

If someone wants to go "nuts" with weight-weenie-ing, 3/4" titanium bolts with Shorty's nuts, works with forged baseplates or flight decks or whatever

As long as they're black and not 400 feet long, doesn't really matter too much

7/8 Allen 4 life tho

If Indy made small head like shorty or crailtap, I’d get Indy. I like the textured tops… smooth is getting on my nerves.

I almost got the rough top bolts from Slappy.

But the small head/longneck from chocolate called my name.

And yes I will be installing one red bolt, because I’m psychotic.

Seeing pics of people's bolts sticking up and talking about tightening them later on made me wanna take a pic

Some of the black on the heads is scratched off from when some of these bolts were on a rain board and got mud on em

But yeah I love the small head 7/8 allens with the standard size nuts and cast baseplates. It looks like this when I set up a board, no heads sticking out, no bolt sticking out, no wrinkles or any of that mess. I just hold the Allen key still and only turn the nut, and I've never stripped a bolt that way

What bolts are good for not digging and sinking into the deck too much? Sometimes I decide I’m gonna go madness and swap my trucks and I hate that now the bolts are digging into the top layer a bit and not flush with the grip

And don’t say just don’t tighten down the hardware so much

That’s obvious but my first truck setup it’s flush then a swap and now they’re sinking into the top layer

If you use Shorty's, Modus etc bolts(small, shallow head) the first time you set it up, and Indy or Ace etc bolts(wide heads) the second time you set it up, that works.

If you just re-grip it you can use the small shallow head bolts again usually

(I don't have any experience with the small heads that are deeper like pig, girl, wknd etc, except for re-setting up a friends board with new bolts, and they worked well enough for a 2nd mount cause they're thicker lower down)

So maybe this is a good method(without regripping):

1st mount - small shallow heads (Shorty's, Modus, etc)
2nd mount - small heads but deeper heads (girl, wknd, pig, etc)
3rd mount - wide heads (ace, Indy, etc)

I think if you set up the same deck a third time I'd definitely re-grip it and use Indy or Ace bolts

Yeah I guess the head size matters cause I traded decks with the homie and before we switched the bolts were starting to sink but his hardware didn’t sink and I was thinking this is probably why cause the bolt head was bigger than what I had on

Yeah, setting up a board that was previously on wide head bolts, and using small head bolts, will sit lower in the holes 100%

Yes, I have my "first time setting up any deck" bolts which are usually Shortys (or Modus or a couple of other similar brands with much more shallow and small heads) and then if it has to be re set up at any time, I will use something with slightly wider heads, or deeper heads, like Thunder, the old Andale bolts, or similar, then if it is really blown out, a trade back in or whatever, the biggest heads like Indy, or generic bolts work well.

Some of those bigger heads right from go are way too big for me to even try to get half way down into the boards, so I can see why some people would struggle or never have bolts that are into the grip - also why a lot of the bigger head bolts in 7/8" will not do up right on cast baseplates and people often will lose nuts or the nut and bolt from them coming loose.

I guess some shops might not have much of a selection or variety of different size heads, but I also see people who have never really looked at them that much either, which might seem wild on here, but the every day average person might not think a whole lot about most parts on their setups, which might make things easier for them, to say the least.

Some of the sealed packs might also be harder to see the size of the bolt heads, but others in clear plastic are good to check, but it almost seems like bolt heads are bigger now, for the most part, or at least those are the brands that are getting a bit more representation at some places I have seen.

I don't really see a lot of Shortys bolts around here these days, but lots more Modus, Pig and some other brands.

Gone since 1988.  I talk too much about skateboards.  Sorry.

I think that's why at most shops I've been to, the generic bolts they have only come in 1". I forgot the generic ones always have the bigger/wider heads

But yeah I would never use those big wide ones right off the bat, in order to get them flush you gotta countersink the board or really crank em and I feel like I snap the nose/tail off decks way more often with those kinda bolts

I used to just use a Phillips screwdriver to countersink the holes

I've been on the 7/8 Allen Shorty's bolts for like, 20 years. I use to use Diamond, and I have some Modus bolts. The bolts are the important part, you can get a big bag of the nuts at the hardware store

That and I hate the way 1" sticks out and gets banged up and I can't get em off

Shorty's should really make 7/8" bolts that come with regular sized nuts also

And the ones with the short nuts can still be called Shorty's Lights to differentiate

Started using a JIS screwdriver rather than a regular phillips and haven't stripped a bolt since. Initially bought a set on amazon for working on japanese motorcycles and found they work really well for hardware. They have more of a 90 degree profile, have a shorter tip, and are slightly pointier. Replaced my skate tool driver with one and haven't looked back. Using girl long neck phillips. Shouldn't make a difference though.

1” Bronze Jetpack Hardware at the moment, but I’m going to get the regular kind next time because I need at least one to be a different color, especially at night.

Yes you should. For the cool tin box alone.

Then share your experience. I’ve almost got them many times… but never clicked the buy button because I don’t know how I’d feel about looking at stars on my grip, either.
