Does anyone know for certain what baseplates can be set up with 7/8 hardware and what ones need 1”? I noticed Indy and thunder cast need at least 1” hardware
It might also depend on the deck too. Some decks I have noticed are a little thicker than others.
In general though, I will usually use the low head nuts on most setups with 7/8" to start with but then if I have to change the board over, I will use regular nuts for any future setups, as the deck bolts are usually down in the board enough that I don't mind.
Some people will always leave the deck bolts sitting up over the deck a lot too, which then means that 7/8" bolts with normal nuts just do not fit. The size of the bolt heads can also have a lot to do with this - especially those big Indy heads and similar but I like to use bolts with smaller heads and have them just under the grip in overall height, eg grip a board as usual, then use a Phillips screwdriver to score the top side of the board in the bolt holes to remove grip round the holes and then the bolts go in nicely and can be screwed down easily to sit just snugly at or slightly below the surface.
A couple of other guys I know are always wary of tightening bolts down too much, so they don't like how I do it but I see they leave the bolts sitting up out of the board a lot, which I don't like when I can feel them when I stand on the board.
The low head nuts are usually available from online hardware stores, a box of 200 or so is not that expensive and I prefer those to any others, but some people always prefer the regular nuts as their tool fits better on them and they have fewer issues, so they say.
In saying that, I have a lot of options in 7/8" and a good number of 1" bolts, so sometimes I will use the 1" more often if I need to add a thin rubber riser and don't mind the extra bolt sitting out from the baseplate, but on most setups I just have a sticker cut up and stuck under the deck between that and the truck so 7/8" will often fit well enough, tightened right down so the head of the bolt is just lower than the grip tape. I don't ever really have issue with the board stressing or breaking through the bolts, with the smaller bolt heads either, but some people say that is a problem for them.
Might be too much info, but that is my go to for deck bolts anyway.
