hlc is a medium flat concave for the most part.

i recently bought a 3-pack of blanks from a polish manufacture called locals. i ordered the 8.3s, which are 32 inch long and have a 14.25 wheelbase. i'm pretty sure that they use one mold for their blanks so every size has that wheelbase. they are pretty cheap, 3 boards cost 400zł shipped which is about 100 dollars, but you have to buy griptape separately. they are pretty mellow, labeled as medium, pretty similar to the dsm mellow concave/steep kick but with flatter kicks. round nose and tail, definitely not pointy but not square either, nose a hair over 7 inches, tail around 6.7. i only skated one of them so far but it's over 3 weeks old and still holds up, it's pretty snappy for an old board and didn't chip or crack or anything. the dude that runs the manufacture (og polish skater) has been doing it for over 12 years and the boards weren't all that good at first but seems like he got it down. if you're in europe and into blanks then check em out

i know he also does orange, purple and natural stains for his blanks, but looks like black is the most common. those are two different shades though, one has like a green tint and the other has a red tint. a homie ordered another 3 pack and he got 2 blacks and an orange. if you want to see the concave dm me and i'll take some photos and send them to you on insta or something, i don't want to fuck around with imgur again

Given the tight tolerances of most woodshops, in terms of width of boards or more so width of veneers, some over certain sizes are just not possible.

I think I heard that at one point from a few people regarding making 10" boards, that it was just not possible at the time, shortly after 2020 through 2021 or so, before they could get wider veneers going again.

Crazy thinking of those super wide boards now, that kind of resemble a skim board when you see them in person.

Not sure if this is the right thread for this but I am kinda puzzled at how Control woodshop is not bigger or how it is not possible to have a wood shop in Canada that is more competitive. All of the trees are here, but the current ecosystem is telling me its cheaper to ship the wood to china or mexico, and then ship it back here, or at least it is a better result. What is so special about the processes there that cant be replicated here? if I were to guess, at Control there is not as much detail into the process as PS Stix, BBS, or DSM has. but the owners are probably still very profitable, so maybe they dont care. I would also guess that there are some processes here that would be a lot more expensive due to environmental concerns. In Mexico, there is probably less onus on the manufacturer to provide a safe environment for the workers so they dont have proper masks all the time (i saw on PS STix video the guy not wearing the mask properly tons of times) or shitty old gloves (or just go raw dog). But how much are we talking then? like would the board have to cost an additional $10 to have it made here and be of equal quality? $20? This seems like it would be just win win for everyone - less fuel wasted shipping wood all over the place, people still get good boards, more competitive environment, more options for people to get boards from etc. more jobs in Canada too (ok im sure you guys dont care about that but i think it is important!)

At least Control still make their own boards in their own manufacturing plant, so they have that going for them.

Some others have been seen to or said to have given up, sold their presses and gone with the easier option of buying in blanks from where ever they could get them from, increasingly China for the cheaper labor and unrestricted manufacturing processes - pay them very little and don't care if the materials are harmful, so it has been said by others - but at the end of the day, I do wonder if there were new startups that could run things better, have easier processes, less waste, countless other things, if the local market in first world countries was reasonable, then it would work better, but I really don't know.

As to any video, pics or other info from existing woodshops, I guess it is up to the individual to be wearing PPE correctly, or at the very least for whoever is taking the pics to try to get them to wear it at all, but who knows - not like there is a regulator there either, so no one is going to get fined for not complying with safety standards, the way there is in other industry / commercial settings.

A couple of things to note, mainly HLC with the new USA woodshop as people talked about on the previous page, but I also saw they have a new Instagram account (from Feb so  four months ago) with some interesting stuff on it.


Their new presses, two per press, but the presses are stacked five high, so ten boards in total per press.

They also make wheels and trucks on site, so although not exactly woodshop related, it is still interesting to see.

I saw this deck from Shake Junt, which I assume is made by BBS? The specs sound perfect! I don't know if I can get this deck here in Germany. Which other companies use that exact shape?

My current Magenta decks are pretty close, except for the wheelbase which is more like 14.23

All the Shortys boards I have seen are on clearance, so I really thought it was all old stock and they were done with wood again, just doing hardware, bushings, associated hardgoods, but I could be wrong.


No access to the product to check or see, but it did seem that they just got wood from anywhere to have those boards, which more people just wanted as a keepsake than to ride.

Habitat 8.38 Mosaic Twin - no laser engraved top markings but I've ridden a Suciu 8.38 Twin with the Habitat logo lasered on the "front" truck mounting holes




Will be interesting to see the latest drop of twins for the holiday season.

AWS / Habitat has used a mix of BBS and China for decks for a while, didn't think it was Bubble and assumed it was DSM since they used them for earlier runs on Suciu's twin, I think it has the green DSM sticker and even stated epoxy but that was over a year ago.

Bubbles messed up the dims on some boards I received - website had the 8.38 listed at 32 x 14.38 but it was  31.75 x 14.25 which was a bummer.

looking through their Instagram and tags. I noticed something funny. If you're a small brand and you use the price point factory to make your full product line you can still use "comes from the same factory as the industry's top brands" in the marketing

Yeah kind of funny compared to almost any other woodshop walk through video I have seen.  As said, workers just seem like they are under the pump and this person is just getting in the way of their quota, as well as having some knowledge of the process but what I would think was absolutely zero knowledge of actual skateboarding in general, but that might be going a little too far on my part.

I always thought of their place as more of a pricepoint or cheaper product facility too, but who knows - do they actually produce top quality decks?  What that person was saying about the average production numbers is huge, compared to some other places.


* Also didn't realise that video was from 2021 or so, with shorts of it on their instagram and more recent posts all from that same tour video, but any which way, it is worth watching and cool to see the production in China of these skateboard products.

Could quite easily be where all those China made Element decks come from (alithough I think they are Excel, like the Element completes), but even with blurred out graphics to hide the brand, or not wanting to promote any one brand, I would think they would be showing off any bigger brand they would make there, more so than their own home brand products.

Who knows really though - such a different scene, than some of the US / Mexico based manufacturers who are a bit more open and out there with the brands they work with or make.

It is interesting looking through all their posts anyway - seeing how the truck parts are put together, as well as the usual woodshop stuff.  I don't see a whole lot of that, along with huge rolls of grip then sliced up, or other similar things.

I saw Pig griptape, Zoo York products, even some composite boards / fiber tops in a video too, so who knows how many brands they actually produce product for.

AW/Habitat are fielded by 2 separate distro's.

The Soveriegn Sect does some completes and the top tier decks etc.

The other is the same company that's doing Heart Supply, Meow and only do completes for the big chain stores etc.

A heads up - I was interested in giving PS a shot but I skate pretty wide decks. Was interested in the Brand-X 9" egg, but reached out before ordering anything to confirm what shop makes it. They responded and let me know that those are made by Woodchuck Laminates. I've seen Brand-X pop up on the PSStix Instagram, so I'm sure they use them for some of their other sizes and shapes too, but looks like they're also using Woodchuck for some.
