It sets the bar for female pro skaters extremely low after being told for twenty years that females suck and will never equate to men or be as good due to physical limitations. Well, women don't exist as a single large entity that support each other always in a male space no matter what. We are way beyond that in skateboardin nog even if we aren't in many other areas socially.

Style has always mattered and thankfully not everyone subscribes to the jock mindset on display in this thread. Dill is a kook, but not because he's given spots on the FA team to Aiden Mackey or Beatrice.

My point is that sometimes a lot of people are hyped on skaters based on their style more than their actual skill level. You can sit and try to put metrics on pro skill level (jock shit) like has been going on in this thread (like when you said she couldn't flip trick in a line), but it's harder to measure what you call "hype." It includes style and other intangibles that draw people to something/someone (like how Beatrice has a career and you don't even though you might have a "better" heelflip than her). @DannyDee you have a point with the Supreme marketability thing and I'd never mention either of those two in the same style discussion as Huf, but whether we like it or not marketability has always been a part of pro skateboarding. It's an industry based on it.

And I get why people feel her story is "hollow" as a skateboarder. It for sure wasn't a traditional pro journey, but she's not a traditional pro skater (she's not a white dude). Again, I fully recognize she's not nearly as core or purely "skateboarder" in the classic sense that other black women (like Samarria and im sure many undiscovered talents) truly are. But I still haven't read a single salient argument against the fact that one black woman in skating getting shine benefits other black women in skateboarding. This is regardless of skill. I'm sure there are black girls who see a big name like Beatrice, get into skating, then discover the marginalized history of women in skating and say fuck it, im gonna fucking do this. We can sit here and say she's not a real pro, she can't skate, etc etc but please hate on this without sounding like some old head gatekeeping jock

Look, congrats to her, and the people she inspires. Can't hate on someone for getting checks to live what they are aspiring to do (unless they are a bad person, which doesn't apply here).

On the Supreme/Hypebeast stuff (which applies to way more people than her), I feel Supreme used to find great skaters who fit their image (Dylan, AO, Dill), now it seems to be finding passable skaters who fit their image and now they get great sponsors through that. They very much became kingmakers. Whereas previously, it was more board brands that made you legitimate (and that hardly matters now). I feel style in a skateboarding sense which in my mind is strictly about how you look on a board is very different than marketability related to the clothing you endorse or crew you are hooked up. I feel Palace walks the fine-line with their team pretty well, they hook up all their close homies and some they put on, but they have generally had a pretty high standard to actually go pro (since they know, no matter who is pro its unlikely dramatically shift how much product you move).

If you want to see inspiration look up Steamer, Brevard, Dal Santo, Soto, Vitoria, Torres, Sablone, Reyes, etc etc etc. Beatrice is the least inspiring female skater that's ever been turned pro but she acts like she's Tom Penny and pays no respect to the women before her who were way way way better than she even aspires to be.

All the others were about skating. Even Cata Diaz is more core and about skating than Beatrice will ever be. I have way more respect for her if we want to go off the beaten path and bring up women who aren't even pro but still killing it.

Right now the issue is there's like a single spot on some teams for a female and that's like everything from hard goods to soft goods. Yeah sorry if this has been mentioned but the real interesting piece behind this is that Dill or whoever felt the Beatrice was marketable enough to be pro get signature lines, etc all based on her personality.

I wish i could find the interview but I remember Dill saying that FA was for black skaters and Hockey was for white. Thats the most backwards shit ever. I tried to listen to a podcast he got on recently called 'its all bad' and I couldn't make it past like 7 minutes if that. He immediately starts virtue signalling about race and colonization, bringing up books he read and authors on the topic. That's is all well and good, but it just came off as so unnatural like he HAD to let people know how hip and aware he is of the struggle. idk man almost seems like hes a little more aware of how much hes using these young black kids to fund his pellegrino addiction . If anyone should have white guilt its people like him.

The whole race thing is a bizarre obsession. Dill isn't an academic, he's a washed up addict who likes to hear himself talk. When you get to that level of success inevitably you kook yourself if you try too hard to be someone you aren't. I mean look at his art, or his godawful Ted talk. it demonstrates that he's not someone who is even comfortable with who he is, and I'm sure he's got a lot of white guilt in there, as do a lot of users on this board.

It’s an absolutely pointless scene - he starts at home and goes to the mall to meet his parents (who he lives with) at the bus stop so they can give him a new car for his trip.
