It's funny, my students recently asked me what my hobbies and favourite sports are, and I didn't mention skating to them. I kind of regretted it later; maybe they would've been interested.

I mean, I don't really talk about skateboarding to people who don't skate. I've learned that it's odd. I don't project it because it's not a ubiquitous activity that everyone can relate to.

That's fucked. Here they tell people about the mountains for snowboarding/skiing/rock climbing etc to attract people to come move here. We even get discounts on seasons passes etc. Like the want staff to be sporty. There is a huge sports committee everything from archery to rugby teams.
They would rather the employees be happy and healthy than worry about injury's.

I don’t talk to skateboarders about my career and I don’t talk about skateboarding in the workplace. As I type this I realize the life of isolation this creates.

this is weird question and it reflects some bad feeling.Hopefully I am a cartoonist and my workmates are pretty open minded and never pay much attention to the holes on my shoes.I am 51 and never thought about hiding shit about my skateboard life...

I’ve worked for the same company coming on 18 years, when I was younger I used to skate with the younger crew all the time, one of those kids (adult now) mentioned to a mutual client recently that I skated and he started asking me about it. It caught me off guard so I just played the whole “yeah ten years ago” card.. Im not ashamed by any means about skating, but in a corporate setting it seems weird.

I have a 9yo and 11yo and try to take them skating as much as possible. Early in the pandemic, every neighborhood parent begged me to teach their kids to skate. It’s wild how much has changed since I was their age and all my neighbors hated me.

I learned my lesson years ago when I mentioned skating in a job interview.  The whole tone changed instantly, and the interview ended with the lady saying “well, we can’t have someone answering the phone saying “like” and “dude” ya know.”  (I said neither in the interview).

Never again

Well fuck I just included skating on a questionnaire for my uni applications
I thought skaters were tough and got laid. Way off

i missed this post...especially if this was some shit job ("answering phones"?), i figure it wouldn't make a difference what she personally felt about skateboarding or skateboarders, because i'm sure my insulting condescension towards her after hearing that simplistic nonsense come out of her mouth would offend her before any of her inane assumptions about skaters resulted in me not getting the job.

one of many good things about never burdening oneself with children, is the comparative freedom one has to tell fuckwits and dipshits to go fuck themselves when it is warranted...

I don't bring it up but if someone asks about what I do in my free time I don't shy from saying it. Obviously get the 'omg you probably break a lot of bones' frequently, I reply with 'nah, never really gotten hurt on my board but I've gotten really messed up playing team sports.'

There was this fat lady at work who was always rude and she overheard me mention it to a coworker. She was like 'you still skateboard? That's pretty immature.' I asked her what she does for exercise and cardio and she said nothing. I told her not exercising is immature and she huffed and puffed and walked away.

33 dentist working on a hospital for 7 years
I proudly talk about my skating life; some people care, others don't.
Teachers and classmates used to judge at university for skating and I always proved them wrong. That made me more confident about it and how I felt about my persona.
Workmates know about my skating and are open to see my tricks on the phone, no big deal. Still some assholes here and there but those are everywhere, overall good vibes about it.

Yes I do dentistry for a living, but If you ask me: I'm a skater first and foremost.

I kept it quiet for years. As a few people have mentioned above there are sometimes negative associations/repercussions

As I’ve gotten further into my career I’ve hidden it less and less

You know how it is. The boss can get away with more than the new guy. Still not advertising it too widely but fuck it, lots of people are open about how much they love other hurt-yourself sports like skiing or football.

By “adult skateboarding activities” I’m assuming you’re referring to a skateboard themed pornographic video right??

Never seen a point in hiding it. Growing up, kids in school who hardly knew me associated me with skateboarding. Not much has changed at my full time job now and it's had no negative impacts on my life. I won't go out of my way to bring it up to non skaters, but if people ask what I like to do, what my plans are after work etc., I'm not just gonna make something up. I skate whenever I have free time to, simple as that. Most people are open about their hobbies, so why shouldn't I be?

No, but I don’t go out of my way to broadcast it to my work mates either. I skate with my kids too so to my coworkers it just sounds like a way that I play with my kids (which is actually true), but yeah, no real reason to hide the fact…

Impish sausage is definitely gonna blow up as a euphemism this year

I was actually thinking about this earlier today. Thankfully my job is extremely chill and most of my friends have either known me since I started skating or know me well enough to not judge me for it.

I’ll bring my board into the office when I know I can skate after work so it doesn’t get fucked up in the car from the weather, which I was embarrassed by for a while but eventually said fuck it. I have kids and most days the 15 minutes I get to skate down the street and back to get away from my desk are all I get.

That being said, if someone played the “that’s for children” card it would be funny telling them their favorite sport involves grown men playing with balls so I don’t see what the difference is

im 25, it depends on who im talking to

i never talk about it with 45+ people because itll just be conversations about how ill get hurt or how im too old for this

if im talking to some stuck up "professional" then i dont talk about it because i know they'll be judging me

if im talking to somebody with artsy inclinations, i bring it up bc they understand the hellride mentality

Kind of but not really. I wont hide it if someone asks. I remember kids calling me "grey bush" at the skatepark when I was in my mid 20's so that didn't really inspire me with great confidence coming back to skateboarding in my mid 30's.

Nope. I even hide it from my housemates because I can't be bothered with the weird questions I'll get about it. It's strange that it's so popular now but still misunderstood in many ways. I guess I don't like talking about it to most people unless they're really down for me to talk about what makes it special and interesting for me.

Currently doing my clinical rotation at a hospital lab I hope to be hired at, and I will absolutely not mention skating.  I wear scrubs, a lab coat, and running shoes.  Every weekend they ask me what I plan on doing, and I always just reply that I’m going to study all weekend.

I learned my lesson years ago when I mentioned skating in a job interview.  The whole tone changed instantly, and the interview ended with the lady saying “well, we can’t have someone answering the phone saying “like” and “dude” ya know.”  (I said neither in the interview).

Never again

Did the exact same thing, it was a very noticeable pause from the interviewer after I said that and I immediately knew I fucked up. Obviously didn’t end up getting the job, but did get a job where my supervisors straight up allowed me to skate through our warehouse which probably wasn’t a good idea since we had a lot of expensive shit that could have broken very easily.
Can someone explain in Fortnite terms?
