Sometimes I feel like I can't tell skaters about my career in Insurance....i want to be able to be accepted as a skater but....

Guess what...no one cares either way....

I also work in insurance - personal lines broker here. I would regrettably talk to you about the woes of our industry for far too long at the skatepark, inevitably resulting in us both no longer being warmed up, and maybe doing two more laps before realizing we've been at the park long enough and time to leave before something silly happens.

I'm more embarrassed to talk about being an insurance agent while out skating, then I am to talk about skateboarding to clients and coworkers.
Hopefully not a kook, but if so, fuck it.

I actually got denied a job because I skated.  One of my friends recommended me for a job and they set up an interview, between that point and the interview my friend let them know I skate, for whatever reason.  In the interview they said they can’t have someone who puts themselves in danger and they thought I’d be injured all the time and would miss work because of it. This was probably 10 years ago.

I don’t care if people know I skate but I prefer for people to know as little as possible about me.

I don't hide the fact I skate in my 30s still, but they also don't know that I'm not great at it  ;D

I’m old. What I do is certainly something but I don’t know if it can be called skating. I guess that’s no.

past 30 and still skating and i think it actually holds some cultural capital in this city. imo its a lot less embarrassing than telling someone you play guitar

but yeah i don't mention it to coworkers. pretty sure what a lot of people hear is "i like committing petty crimes, making traffic nervous, generally causing chaos, and i hate cops", which, you know, is all somewhat true

nah man, saying you skate at 30 is way more embarrassing than playing geetar

if you mean saying you play in a band, than that is definitely way more embarrassing than skateboarding tho

I wish I played guitar.  I’d play acoustic at parties and stuff, people would love it.

So, this whole thread can be summarized by 'people who are extremely vocal about their hobbies are annoying, just keep it to yourself unless anyone's asking', right?

I only feel ashamed of my hobby because I’m trash at it and picked it up again on a whim as a grown man.

If I’d stick with it as a kid and was wall riding and tre flipping everywhere looking like Carlisle aikens I would 100% own it, at least in my personal life. Being athletic and passionate about something are attractive qualities

Or say fantasy football, I’ve never done it but people love that shit.  There’s even an HR run FF league at my 500+ employee company

Never. I’m not interested in what they’re up to & speculate they are not interested in what I’m doing.

I also like keeping to myself about my interests. On this board, we can say whatever, whenever. It’s just a fantasy world. Dare I say a dream inside of a dream. But then who is the dreamer?

Starting to believe I shouldn't, but that'd require me to have another interest to talk about and I don't really have any that aren't more solitary pursuits so it's kind of pointless. Add gender into the mix and aside from talking about men I feel like I have nothing in common w women my age since I think I might be in the like... 0.1% of my demo in skating. I also find almost everything else kind of boring. That said, I feel like if it comes up ppl think it's cool but they can't really relate so it's a non starter. Then you become the "skateboarder" woohoo where you work. THAT said, almost everyone's adult hobbies are childish. My mom in in her 60s and very into adult coloring books and advanced paint by number shit. Maybe it's genetic.

i have a lot of hobbies so it's not awkward at all.

"i'm into skateboarding, mountain biking, snow boarding, tennis, etc."

i don't self identify around my hobbies these days so i wouldn't say i'm a skater. for me the awkward thing is when people ask if i watch sports. i've found not liking watching sports gets you judged more than skating.

Due to Gen X being in their 50s, at this point skating has been around and big in Amerian culture for decades.

Similar to how video games are not seen as nerdy anymore by the mainstream, I get pretty positive responses from people when they find out I skate.

Most people below the age of 60 probably see it like how we see mountain bikers or rock climbers. Just another individual sport.

I can’t. My boss drives by my go to parking lot on his way home and often sees me skating. He claims he never saw me landing anything. Which I can believe.

Usually he just requests that I don't get hurt (not out of concern for me but because he is afraid I wouldn't be able to work my ass off).
