Origin stories, anyone? How’d ya come to SLAP?
« on: May 03, 2023, 06:11:08 PM »
I wonder about this sometimes, like with people coming fresh to SLAP, especially in the context of contemporary internet/social media age- how did you find out about the boards?

I was a high school kid with a SLAP mag subscription and Whitely announced they were making a message board or something that. Been in and out ever since. Slap is venereal, for real.

I wish I had a good answer to that question. I guess that I lurked, and given the date of my profile being started, I stayed because of the video releases.

The fact that I cannot remember exactly makes me wonder if my starting point on the boards was so horrific that I have completely blocked it from my memory, and seven years from now, I will start bawling my eyes out in the middle of a grocery shopping run after having a realization.

I was big into forums back in the day, I was on skaters cafe and skateboard city and I think I lurked the thrasher forum as well. I probably found them and Slap just by searching skateboard forum on askjeeves

Always liked going on forums and just seeing people's batshit opinions and funny arguments. Would go on whatever hypebeast sites and see dummy's argue about what is or isn't swag, in low points go on pornhub and just read insane people talking in the comments on videos (I wish I saved it but there's one where seriously a hundred people are arguing then coming to an agreement on which Asian nations have the biggest dicks eg. Ok Pakistanis are biggest but us Indians are second biggest then twenty comments later nah fuck that Cambodians have bigger dicks than Vietnamese etc)
Anyway went without a smart phone for years then got one because of COVID + more time sitting around= me on slap

I was on all the other skate forums back in the day and somehow found my way here through word of mouth.  Its a good way to kill time during shitty weather plus back in the day it was fun watching people go nuts trying to get PM's for the big releases.

I was on skateboard.com.au back in the day and I had an account here but I only made a few posts and then forgot about it because 'sk8parx' was pretty poppin back then and I didn't have time for slap. I was searching for random skate gossip on google like a year ago and Slap came up so I checked it out again.

Did any other Australians ever post on skateboard.com.au when it had the forum? Shit was so funny, I think Dane Burman had an account plus some other notable Australian skaters.

I don’t know if I was ever on it, but found my way here after Emerica boards closed.   Lurked for many a year before creating first account

Skateboard.com.au was like filtered slap. I think Chima talking shit on es and possibly juice and selling a bunch of es shoes is prob my first real memory and Benny bodnars spicy Thailand trip probably about when I was done with the internet for a while

I knew about the OG Slap from back in the day but had no idea the message board was still around until I stumbled upon it while researching a niche truck brand. That was last summer, probably just a couple of weeks after I got back into skating after an 18-year hiatus. It's been my main source of interacting with the skateboarding world ever since cause I'm not on any social media.

I think I used to go on a forum called skateboard-rumours.net or something dumb.  It eventually tanked and I ended up here after realizing how wack the Thrasher forums were.

Funny enough I found slap because I used to lurk the hypebeast forums. There was a board setup thread and someone called them out for copying Slap so I lurked here and kinda stayed.

I remember finding it hilarious that people hated P-Rod but worshipped Pete Eldridge, who I thought was sick but also a pretty random dude to champion like that.

The skate subreddits are full of "toxic positivity" and really bad takes.
Like somebody will post "should I buy a new deck?" with a pic of a deck that's razortailed to fuck and looks like it sat at the bottom of a lake for 20 years, and the people on r/skateboarding will be like "don't let anyone tell you that you need a new board or to do anything you don't want to do! shred it dude! ride it til it breaks!".

This place is a little more jaded and cynical than I care for at times, but I'll take that over the annoying circlejerking on reddit. I don't really know of any other active skate chat sites or forums.

I can't remember exactly which skate controversy it was, but each time I would hear a rumor floating around, I would Google it and inevitably end up here. After lurking for so long, I decided to just jump into the mud.

I was a volunteer admin over at Thrasher's very, very old PHPBB-based forum, and kinda always knew of the place, but just never had time to visit. Even though the forums there were really slow-paced, I used to contribute nuts and bolts work on the backend (adding functions and unbreaking things). That phased out so I got jumped in over here.

When I was in HS a friend I looked up to invited me over to watch Heath’s Mindfield part that he had gotten a link to on here. I figured this was the best place to find videos since the closest local shop was/is an hour away.

Heard about the forum in passing the past handful of years, but didn't really give it the time of day.

Started reading some of the pinned forums and realized this could be a place to talk about skate shit in detail. Most of the locals have pretty surface level conversations about gear and tricks but I like the nitty-gritty.

Now I just hang out here while I'm at work.

Came for the memes, stayed for the madness.
Wow sorry, didn't realise I was dealing with a sick cunt here

Isn’t slap like the oldest active forum on the internet at this point?

Anyway I can’t remember how I found out about this place, but I’ve always had a foot in the past and always hang out in old school forums related to things I like so it was only a matter of time before I stumbled in here.

When I restarted skateboarding in 2020 after more than 20 years of the bloard, I researched some info for a set up. That's when I found out about Slap. I then lurked for a while before making an account. I like these old messageboards and have been or am still on a few others. I don't do other social media so that's my only interactive resource. I am happy I discovered the boards, it helped me find my way around skateboarding in the new millennium (not so new anymore) and lots of useful trick and gear advice.

Pretty boring origin but I migrated here from the Skateboarder Mag message boards in maybe 2001/2002, I think I may have seen that the had a message board in the magazine from having a subscription or from constantly going to skateboard company and/or magazine websites. What's kind of funny was that I received my subscription essentially by accident, having it supplemented for a rollerblading magazine that went out of business from the same publisher (yes I rollerbladed and thought it was cool at like the age of 9), with the 1st issue I received being the Reynolds F/S flip down Wilshire 15 for context. I think I heard people talking about the Slap message board (WFTW was really hot at that time and I'm pretty sure people in that thread were talking about Slap), so I came over to the dark-side, lurked for a couple of years and then made my original account @methuselah (based on the infamous Methuselah rookie card). Abandoned that account in '07 and have been with this account for close to 16 years now.

ever since good and evil came out I lurked toymachine.com (sup @jgonzalez ), ed's blog, and crailtap for the most part. and thrasher

I think sometime around 2010 I checked out this forum after reading about it on slap magazine or somewhere, the one with Jim greco's face on the cover. That year Matt Rodriguez and Danny dicola gave a sweet demo in my town when a 7.2 earthquake fucked things up as they skated. I remember submitting a question for Matt about his experience that day back when Whiteley video interviewed pros.

Anyway, around then toymachine.com was getting stale and crailtap had their whole site revamp so I lurked slap for a year before creating an account.

Damn, 13 years of my life here! sup pals

I just want everyone to know that I'm only 32.8% skateboarder, and that's on a good day. The rest is just soy and cum.

Isn’t slap like the oldest active forum on the internet at this point?

From Wikipedia:

“One of the first forum sites (which is still active today) is Delphi Forums, once called Delphi. The service, with four million members, dates to 1983. Forums perform a function similar to that of dial-up bulletin board systems and Usenet networks that were first created starting in the late 1970s.”

Fun fact.

What do you think they’re talking about after 40 something years?
When nothing in society deserves respect, we should fashion for ourselves in solitude new silent loyalties.
