I'm in NZ and we are now getting the DLX China decks. Anything that isn't a classic eagle is now made in China. I picked up a Raney Bere's 9" pop and I thought I was getting a regular BBS deck but this wasn't the case. The China decks so seem to be considerably cheaper however. The concave and shapes are a pretty good replication but they are a bit steeper and they are stiff and a touch heavier. I guess it is good to have a cheaper option but I still prefer a BBS Mex deck to these new ones.
Here in AU and looking at the same situation.
Curious to see and try one of these, but I don't feel the need to grab one as soon as they get here.
* Also glad I stocked up on regular BBS boards too.
Doesn’t it seem weird that DLX's pro boards could be considered to be of a lesser quality than their team boards - the eagles? If you were GT or Mason or whoever wouldn't you be kind of bummed about that?
Maybe they can make more of them, which is cool if you're getting paid royalties..
If we are talking BBS wood vs China wood, they are still both considered "pro boards" regardless of what graphic is on them, especially when compared to the price point or budget wood that has been done in the past by BBS or other woodshops, which holds up well enough for some people, but was definitely a lower quality deck.
Also the fact that they are making boards in China to the same specs, concave and shapes (for the most part) at a lower price and then can ship them direct to whatever country round the world, it makes things way more cost effective and those boards can make it to shops everywhere at the same time as the catalogs are released, so I don't have to wait three months to get the DLX order from Mexico to SF / USA and then shipped down here to AU, but any which way, I guess there will always be those who can be objective, vs those who cannot about any give topic. Sure I am a grumpy old man about some things, but I see this as a good thing in general, even if I do prefer BBS wood myself, as I have said in the past.
I can't say I have come round fully to the China made boards, but I do have some in rotation and I have become a bit more used to them now - little things like how stiff they are tends to throw me off, but that is one of the best selling points for some other people, who skate them and think they are great, keeping pop a lot longer than BBS made boards, just as one example.
Any which way, I am not a DLX rep, not even an indirect rep for any brand other than what I prefer and like to ride myself, so I have no interest in self promotion or get kickbacks from anyone, but I do like to have level headed rational discussions about anything to do with skateboard products, hence maybe the "too long" reply here.
To note, it seemed like a couple of pro riders did only want their product to be on BBS for a bit, maybe they still do, but I think now they have kept a short list of boards that will still ONLY be BBS, just to keep anyone happy who might have very negative things to say about product from China or elsewhere.
As I said in another thread / post the other day, it seems like for now, all AH eagles, Real ovals and twins, Krooked original eyes and Easy Riders are all still BBS only, then a few other specials here and there, but for the most part, almost everything else is now straight from the DLX woodshop in China, which keeps costs down and provides more product in a timely manner, without cutting corners on quality of the product.
* Maybe I should have been in sales...
