I always say you have to judge people by what they did in the context of the time they were in.

Gonz and Cab both changed skateboarding with what they did, video-wise. In the context of his own time, Berra is not and never has been revolutionary. He's had some gnarly footage, no argument there. But he wasn't a game-changer.

If you were around in 1987 and saw that clip of Gonz kickflipping the ditch gap in Texas, or the 180 ollie to fakie 5050 down the rail in Savannah, or the boardslide UP the rail in Savannah, or the ollie over the bench onto the rail at Oceanside in 1986, or the ollie to smith on a picnic table in the 1985 Thrasher video, that shit changed the way you thought of skating. Because absolutely NO ONE was doing that stuff then. And all that was way before Video Days even.

And do I even have to get going on Cab? The guy influenced more people than Steve Berra has pissed off. And that's saying something.

I remember seeing some photo of him ollieing one mini ramp to another and the gap was pretty huge in some contest and I was hyped on it and I get what CD is saying about Berra. ha. City shit is the best. I don't live in the Chicago area anymore, but I grew up skating the city. We were all about it, take the train downtown any chance we could. Even if there was something exactly like a spot in the city in the suburbs, we'd hit up the Chicago spot, and never even bother with the suburban one. I'm pretty sure if heaven exists its just one perfect summer day at the art institute after another. I'd still love to see Chicago get the respect it deserves though, and can't wait to see some Silas footy from there. Are you still up around there? I was under the impression you moved to San Diego or something. If starting a blog would help, I'd be down, it would just be really odd trying to blog about what's going on in Chicago from LA (for the record I only moved here for school though!)

Yes.. i read the board quite a bit... i have debated registering from time to time... but never pulled the trigger. But here i am. bout to stick up for the Berrics.
You guys have to realize that when the Berrics first started it was extremely exclusive to folks that either lived close.. or other pros that had helped pay for the obstacles. It reminded me of the old World park. When i was lucky enough to get an invite... (the first park set up years ago)... i couldn't even skate.. i was embarrassed.... rollin in and seeing Guy, Koston, Ave, Bieble, TK, and a few others. Koston was learning switch back nose blunts down the old rail.. and Guy was doing impossible lip slides and back 270 lips down the same rail. Fuckin SICK!!

When i seen the Berrics go live on the web.. i was so pumped. So pumped... that i went out there to film some stuff. While i was there.. i got to watch PJ film some Battle Camander stuff... I watched Cole film his in a couple days lol...  I watched Apples film a Bangin in 1 day!!  Needless to say.. im a huge fan. After i had spent some decent time there... i got to follow some of the daily "regiment". I saw that Team after team was showing up... I saw 25 pro's skating all at once.. I saw kids who win the online contest skating and filming.... I saw some of the neighborhood "local" kids skating... I saw some serious ill shit happening.

Now im not going to lie... Pro decks are dying. Skate companies are hurtin something crazy. There are so many "newish" elements that have caused it.. but that is the way it is right now. It is HIGHLY possible that skate companies could drop having Pro boards some day. It may get to the point were the skater just rides for a company.. and just represents the "brand" rather than representing his board. Almost like riding for a distribution instead of a board company. To me... thats fucked. But skate shops aren't selling as many "pro boards" as they used too... some of the bigger "mall" type stores have backed down from pro boards..  a lot has to do with shop boards.. blank boards.. just cheaper ways to buy and sell them shits. I can't hate on that.... but companies have to find a way to stay in business or Pro skaters will no longer exist except in some shitty contest circuit.

With the lack of "Plaza" skating... its going to be hard to find another Mike Carroll, Henry Sanchez, Javante Turner, Rick Oyola, Matt Reason, Stevie Williams, Kareem Campbell, Popalardo, Ave, Welsh, ect. There are so many skaters that are hella good right now... that there is no where for them to "showcase" their steez. Everything right now is based on "tricks"... that isnt going to last. It gets boring.  No more Kelch's or Clydes... Sheffs...ect. No personality. So... seeing all these dudes in one place skating together seems to be bringing back that feeling of "friendship" and the real reason people skated. Pushing and feeding off each other.

So the Berrics is extremely good for skating in my opinion. It gets me hyped to see footage... it gets me hyped to see some new kid "showcasing" his shit on the same shit Pro's have laid it down on. It reminds me of a plaza... i know its not.. but it reminds me of it.

As far as the mail order goes... Fuck yeah its good!! A place for my guys to have there shit for sale with out the wackness. All pro shit... all real skate shit... exclusive colab shit... its like FTC back in the late 90's. FTC had mail order.. but they didn't have a park to pay for... they just had the city streets. We don't have those so much these days. With the caliber skatings at... if dudes went and filmed some cool downtown skating shit with a back pack on.... they would get clowned. Especially that kids don't give two shits about style and flavor right now(yeah... im bitter bout that).

Anyway.. Steve and Eric have a lot on their plate... the warehouse costs a ton of money. I have to back them on what they are doing. Every single pro who skates there has to back what they are doing. How can you hate on that..... companies need something like this.  Skate shops can use something like this. To run an ad in a magazine is regular. I think its 2,000 for 1 page per month! Or something like that. MAYBE there is 100.000 magazines sold. (i heard that number just recently... i could be way off though)... Berrics gets 6 million hits a month. 6 MILLION.  That is some serious heat. But understand how much it costs to run a web site that has that much band width. Its all expensive. For advertising to come for shops as cheap as Berrics offered it... is pretty crazy. And good for the shops.. my guys are doing it.. so if they think its good... i have to back them too.

Lastly... its not like these dudes are millionaires. Neither has a show... neither are "mega" contest winners. Pro's don't get "retirement" money unless they caught percentage deals when the company they skate for gets bought. Even though the Berrics is dumb popular right now... its not like the park caught millions of up front dollars. It takes a long time to grow that shit. A long time. After TAXES and payroll... there isn't much left. Maybe... hopefully.. in the future... the Berrics will make a bunch of good dough... and the shops that they support... and the shops that support them will grow together.. and eventually skateboarding will grow and make good cash like it did in the late 90's early 2000's. Then there can be a whole new influx of skaters who can make a living doing what they love.

The skateboard business is dying..... The illest companies are barely holding on... pro's are getting pay cuts and flat out clipped across the board. Shits wack. Berrics is helping to keep that shit alive.

So.... with that.... i am now a registered member. lol.

I don't know if The Berrics gives off that same feel (the "plaza" feel), in fact i don't think it does at all.  I don't think that vibe of skating will be able to be mimicked or even re-invented because of the laws and regulations of today.  However I agree with you 100 percent that, thats what gets me psyched to skate everyday and thats what skating needs.

Anyway, if we're comparing the Berrics to mail-order places, and we agree that to some extent the crappy non-skater-owned mail order/mall type places take business away from the "real" skater-owned small shops, than doesn't it follow that the Berrics is kinda doing the same thing?

I guess I'm not convinced that diverting money from small local shops to the Berrics coffers is supporting "real skateboarding." I think it's basically supporting Steve and Eric and Donovan and Reda - all of whom have been coming off lately as egotistical douchebags, and not people I want to support - even though I respect the TALENTS of all those dudes to various degrees (Koston is, of course, such a skate legend that it sucks to even have to include him in this shit).

Josh, I think what you're overlooking is how much Berra's attitude and - for lack of a better word - character is affecting everyone's feelings. He is coming off like a greedy, disingenuous little bitch. You obviously know him personally, and we don't, so if you say he's basically a good dude with poor web communication skills, I'll take your word for it. But he really hasn't been doing himself any favors - not just with the Berrics stuff but also with his reactions to ANYONE who dares disagree with him.

It's when the shit gets hard - when you encounter opposition or flack - THAT is when your real character gets revealed. Not when everything's going your way and everyone's down with you. Know what I mean?

Im in Michigan right now. I usually skate Chi in the summer. Usually just late night jams with the homies from Uprise. I will be there quite a lot in the spring though. I want to get the majority of my DGK stuff in Chicago. Mainly in the Loop and the North side of downtown...(Hancock building area).

And "i" think is respectable. Not that my opinion really matters.. but i consider myself a skater rather than apart of the business side of it. So i look at  this shit as a skater. I won't make "extra" dough... i get paid what i get paid and thats that. Its not even royalty based anymore. (although... if my shit aint sellin... pay cuts are coming...lol) hint... hint...... 

As far as your "character" text... yeah.. some people can come off with lack of character. I just see and know that Steve's agenda isn't "greed"... and when trying to explain a situation over and over can get tiring and tend to make someone aggro. I do see the side of the "Pals"... and can see how one might think there is a "make money off skate shops plan"... but its not really like that. Advertising isn't free.. and its usually not cheap. Its just an "option" for shops to "jump on the band wagon".  A good example is my guys shop here in Michigan "Premier".... at this time.. they opted not to go Unified". When i asked them.. they said that the kids in this area already know about them... and they have a good clientele. They like the idea of the Unified and think it could be great for certain shops.. but they don't need it. So they aren't "hating" on the program... but they too sell a ton of stuff on there web site.
