I'm not into the look of it but I think velcro could work if the shoe has already a slip on construction. That being said the end tip of the velcro should be on the intern side of the feet, not on the extern side (in order to reduce the contact with the griptape).

Yeah but no. if you think about it the plastic loops on the outside would make the velcro strap to sticks out and rip with the griptape abrasion. And you cannot change Velcro's like shoe laces...

The Kyle Walker 2 has got to be the most perplexingly derided shoe I've seen in the last decade.

It's not my style, but I am utterly baffled as to why people act like it looks like an aborted fetus dipped in diarrhea. It's a mostly straight-forward Vans upper, a silly looking strap, and a sole that runs a bit too far up the back of the shoe. Sure it's a little ugly, but I can't see why it's treated like the worst thing ever designed. I sometimes feel like I'm not seeing the same photos of the shoe as everyone else.
