I changed the axle nuts right away on my Af1s when I still rode them. No issues with Classics so far.

I don’t understand how the AF1 retheading nuts have passed QC and are still shipping on AF1s despite what must surely be surely tons of negative feedback about them. When I had AF1s, mine immediately loosened and I almost lost a wheel so I had to swap to regular axle nuts.

Anyway I’m skating some 33 classics now and have had zero complaints, great trucks and I prefer them to AF1s
[close]

This has been my experience with AF1’s on multiple sets. I’ve actually had to just toss out otherwise perfectly good hangers because not even standard axle nuts will stay on after so long. At one point I emailed Mesa and got a replacement set after sending video evidence of the loss of functionality in a new set of hollows but even the replacements became unusable after a few months. Having my wheels stay on my skateboard while I’m riding it is kind of a big deal to me. They’re definitely aware of the issue but continue to produce faulty product so idk if it’s just not widespread and I’ve had bad luck buying sets that come with defective axles/nuts or what. I just ride Indy now.

hot glue/plumbers tape worked for me when i absolutely wrecked the threads on some new ace af1 55s - tried to set my board up fast and put the nuts on krooked. i know the hanger metal is softer than indy, but not sure about the axle. a small piece of duct tape works in a pinch too, a skate bag essential.

Got the deedz trucks in from SPoT when they was having that sale. Couldn’t hang with the colored hanger.

Plastic blast. After I accidentally started with fine glass which I’m afraid May been too abrasive. So we will see.

man I would take a raw unpolished hanger and baseplate any day over polished. wonder why that never became a thing, would save them time and money if it still grinds the same, keep it raw.

My gear madness is crawling up from its cave: AF1 44s with 8.25 DLX Easy Rider shape (14.38" wb) - hot or not?

Should be good! I just switched back to my AF1 44s after not riding them for a while and they felt great! I was a bit concerned they might be too squirrly for me (stock bushings, never touched the KP nut) but I didn't even notice. I also haven't had any of the issues mentioned about loose axel nuts. Just an overall solid and great feeling truck. When I first got them, they were on a 8.25" 14.353" WB deck and currently on a 8.375" 14.25" WB deck.

It’s a random kobalt one I grabbed from Lowe’s  in a set that was on sale. I think a few sockets was missing but was cheap. But it’s honestly been better than what the shop I work  provides. I think I’ve broken 2 of their craftsman ratchets the bearing would slip and hitting  knuckles suck so much but this lonely one hasn’t slipped on me yet.

Also hell yeah for blue collar slap pals.

Kobalt makes really solid power tools too, project farm on YouTube does tool comparison videos and the kobalt stuff always performs great. I had a bunch of their stuff at my last job and still swear by them. Shout out all blue collar pals.

I keep reading about this issue and never had it. By now I skated like 5 sets of AF1 and only once one nut was loose enough that you could just use your hand but it never was nowhere close to get out of the truck.
Been on Ace for like 3 years in a row now but I'm starting to feel to try something else so I have a set of Lurpivs waiting for spring.
Sir, I'm going to politely, but firmly, ask you and your common sense to leave this establishment.

Any word on when the inverted af1 will be released?

From what I've heard they were having kingpin problems and are cancelled/pushed back for the time being, sad to say. So I wouldn't wait around for them if you're holding out on buying new trucks.

Just got af1 44 hollows.  No nut problem.  They broke in within a couple hours.  I love them so far.  Leaving them stock without tightening.  Flush with thread.  Wish they were even lighter.  As good but not better than indies.  Quicker turn.

So they advertised the truck of the future but hadn't tested it? Sounds just like what they did with AF1

Just got a brand new pair of classic 44's and currently skating the AF1 55's, which feels sooo good. I want them destroyed before switching up, but I can hardly wait after reading up comments here. I skate 8.5 decks, so thinking about doing 3 washers on the inside for sure.

yesterday had a short first session on classics, coming from Indy but i noticed their turn got significantly worse out of the box last time i switched trucks. so im trying Ace this time. turns perfectly right away. feels amazing. my pop is suffering tho. normally ride the back truck a lil tighter. ill see if i just addapt to it or if i tighten it a bit as i go on.

Ace are made in China and I think from what I've read won't be covered by the tariffs. Not every single good gets a tax.

Yes, Ace are made in China. Why do you think 'sports' goods will be exempt from the tariffs?

this is my ace beef: i can’t pop well with them, and that seems to be my number one criteria for trucks, pop.

the classics, with a short wb, and tall wheels, did pop well, but i had to have those other two for
it to workout.
classics do turn reeeeeeeally nice.

I experienced the same issue w/ my pop going to shit when I first switched to Ace.
Got it back simply by moving my back foot a little more into the pocket to increase the pre-load & compensate for that quick/easy pop they have as a result of that shorter wheelbase & longer leverage point.
For me personally, it meant placing my back foot about a 1/2” closer to the rear bolts.
Obvs, your results may vary.
I don’t find the need to do this on the Lurps, Stage IVs or XIs I’m currently running on other set ups, but w/ that quick adjust in technique, I’m back in biz w/ the Ace geo.

I wanna play you in a game of SKATE for the right to continue talking shit on me… You think you got me?

this is fantastic advice and jives with my personal experience. deeply pocketed behaviors.
ever notice Shane Oneills foot placement? way in there? it wilds me out. from coming too on 7.5s with venture lo’s, and the decks being like 31” long, i’ve normalized having my foot at the tippy tip. like ball of the foot on the tip, rest of the foot hanging off.
Lou’s point of moving the foot down away from the tip, absolutely helped me.

as an aside, the ace/indy higher geo, has the tendency of giving me glimmers of hope, on shit i cannot do. something about it lends to the hail mary.

I'm in the exact same boat and can't unlearn this, no matter what I try. I know I shouldn't do it. I try not to do it. But every. single. time. my rear foot slides back like it's being pulled by a magnet just before I actually pop. Shit's infuriating as hell.

Just echoing the back foot placement tweak works for me, too. Indy guy for a couple decades but switched to AF1 early last year and it didn’t click for me until I inadvertently moved it into the pocket and it all made sense.

My Ace recipe: AF1 Hollows. Riptide pivot cups. Ace hard bushings. Throw the re-threading red nylock nuts to trash, replace with standard nuts. Put two washers inside, one outside to not expose too much of axle. Keep back foot in pocket.

Works well enough for me.
