We haven't had any Ace issues the last year or two other than the axle nuts. When kids buy Ace from us I replace the axle nuts immediately. The re-threading nuts always come loose fairly quick. Our shop is near a skatepark and it became pretty predictable how many kids would come in with a missing nut.
Otherwise the one issue we have is people refusing to ride harder bushings and cranking the stock so much they blow out. That's their own fault and the replacement bushings are cheap enough that it's pure stubbornness and not the trucks. I personally love both Ace grinds and appreciate them for what they are. AF1 seem to have a slightly smoother grind.
I agree. First thing I swap out the default re-threading nuts, and replace stock bushings with Ace hard set. Not too much hassle in my opinion, but I wonder if the re-threading nuts stay tight for anyone, including team riders.
Re swapping over the Ace nuts - yes that seems fairly common too. I think one set even from new were so close to being able to just put on with fingers, I didn't even need a tool, then thought better of it and swapped in regular nuts right away.
As a different story, I had one guy who must have skated the same wheels for the life of the trucks and never even touched the axle nuts after putting them on, as the back truck was down to axle and his 60 mm wheels were maybe still at 59 mm or so - the Kanfoush Conical Full 60 mm wheels. I only noticed because of the red nyloc and then checked and sure enough, it might be the only set I have ever seen last, but maybe for everyone else with normal use and always swapping over wheels, the red nyloc just wears out a lot faster than on the regular nuts.
* I am still yet to even see or try a set of the Ace Hard bushings, but I also think most people I know who ask for Ace usually ride fairly loose anyway, or have since swapped back to other trucks.
