I'm kinda digging The Agency. Trashy as fuck but finally some that is shot somewhat decently.
You must be very refined if you think that’s trashy
Nah, I agree with @OwlGreen, though I also enjoyed it.
There's a lot more emphasis on overpriced cars, clothes, and real estate, than there is on any kind of real social or geopolitical questioning, and none of us will ever be as refined as the millionaire casts' collective bone-structure.
This is the Fassbender show we’re talking about? I’m 5 eps in and it’s fairly Le Carre to me because it’s about the psychic toll espionage plays on its practitioners and the damage it plays on one’s personal relations. Haven’t really noticed any cars and the real estate just seems like nice London apartments to me as an outsider from the US. Outside of the actress playing tbe Ethiopian lady and maybe the girl who got the shit kicked out of her, everyone’s looking kinda appropriately worn down. Even fassbender looks like he’s slowly evolving into the rock monster from Never Ending Story
Down to argue this for fun, but ultimately I have no issue with us seeing it differently. Superficially I see the Lecarré comparison, but his stories are all about the moral bankruptcy of the nations and institutions engaged in waging violence on one another. Almost invariably in his stories, no good act goes unpunished, often even culminating in the death of the protagonist. Whereas, what we have here (so far) is a pretty clear "hero", working collaboratively within institutions so far framed as humane and "good guy"-esque. The main character's relationships are not failing, to the contrary, they play to positive social archetypes of single-dad-bonding-with-coming-of-age-daughter, valued coworker, and loving, trusting partner.
My predictions for further episodes are: daughter gets kidnapped, dad and cia friends bend the rules to save her, as well as somehow "saving" the sudanese from the clutches of the evil chinese and russian interests. The narration scenes so far with fassbender in hospital seem to indicate a debriefing, or epilogue in which he is still in good standing with the powers that be. We shall see, I will watch.
