the eternaut already got me looking forward to season 2 next year

blazed right through it

Sounds interesting, never heard of it til now so I'll check that out.

Started Mobland and have to say I was an immediate fan right away on the first episode. For some reason was a little skeptical but looking forward to watching the rest

Grave of the Fireflies is on Netflix. First and only time I’m ever watching it. 10/10 animated feature, but I cried my eyes out for a good 20 minutes near the end.

Another amazing episode of The Rehearsal. Nathan Fielder might be our finest export.

It started off a little slow with the dog cloning weirdos, but the whole Sully and Evanescence thing was soooo good.

Alright dammit I'm in

Lemme know your thoughts.

I was binge watching maritime and aviation disasters before the series started so it's right up my alley.

Disclaimer: More appropriate to post this in Real Confessions + show available on Max not Netflix, just posting here.

Well, started watching The Wire for the first time ever. Surpassed all expectations. Absolutely hooked then went to bed @ 0400. On Episode 7. Not sure if a show made me feel this way before. Best way to describe involves feeling really connected then having so much empathy for every single character regardless of their profession, which side they are on , socioeconomic status, & actions. For example, Bubbs makes me feel some type of way, just might be one of my favorites. And maybe my lifetime of substance abuse problems, makes me feel really connected to how some police detectives show up to work completely wrecked. Thankfully, I don’t show up to work like that anymore nevertheless really felt the pain in those scenes from years living like that.

Also, always loved gangster film/shows. This the ultimate gangster realm to me. Obviously, the technology outdated. I never owned a pager however felt nostalgic because used a pay phone when I was super young. Super fascinating how they tapped the pay phones & set up the tech to track the pagers.

God damn it do i need to fully dive into the wire then? I think I only watched the first episode and felt a bit meh out of it like it was outdated but at the same time my favorite shit is outdated anyway, should I just binge a handful of episodes to give it a true shot?

Mateo , felt exactly the same. The first episode hard to get through. Just felt so old. Actually paused it & stopped watching then decided to give it another chance a few days later

The Wire is incredible. The Shield is great too, if you've never seen.

I’ll also highly recommend The Wire. While I never finished the series, seasons 1 & 2 are absolutely untouchable.

Also, if you can stomach (albeit exaggerated) prison violence, check out Oz. JK Simmons is terrifying in that series.
HBO really had hit after hit with Oz, The Sopranos, and The Wire.

I envy anyone who gets to watch The Wire with fresh eyes.

I really enjoyed We Own This City as well. Hell Treme is great too if you like music. I've been meaning to watch Homicide Life On The Street but its still in the to watch list.

Generation Kill if you watched all those and want to laugh at some military incompetence.

The Shield is also really good in its own way though unrelated other than being another police show. Oh I see someone posted that above me. Good man.

I think 9/11 happened right before "The Shield" aired. Showrunner Shawn Ryan says the idea of how far do we let law enforcement go was a reason he felt the show was even more timely after 9/11. I agree that whatever season had that corny guy from "Hawaii 5-0" as the new leader of the strike team (season 6 maybe) was a dip on quality. They picked it back up on Season 7 tho.

Glad you like Oz. A lot of folks dismiss it, but I think it goes to another place: inward.

For me, my top GOAT TV dramas are:

1) Oz
2/3) The Wire/The Sopranos (Tie)
4) The Shield
5) Six Feet Under

I bought all of "Homicide" but the thing I am having a hard time getting into is the editing. They do like cuts right in the middle of a scene and then just pick up with the same shot. I don't know what they call those types of cuts but it is jarring for me and feels unprofessional and lazy (like they didn't want to start over from the top with a new take). Fontana has the cuts on "Homicide" going like a YouTuber's cuts.

Are those not cuts for commercials?

I always thought Shield came from Training Days success.   I see some similarities between shields bad guys ending and the wires, but not in a plagiaristic way

The type of frenetic editing I'm referring to happens a lot in this episode. It's like they cut the shots way too often, almost as if there is no storyboarding or blocking and they are just going off script and constructing the whole thing in the editing room.  There has to be three times as many cuts in this than the normal drama series episode.

Hmm that’s interesting (I’m on episode 2).   I know it’s a different kettle of fish than most network dramas and it’s a strong possibility that they “lit the world” and let the actors have freedom.   They say in film, the editors are the final re-writers

If you’re looking for more in the BCU, try the book and the HBO movie?/miniseries? The Corner, also by Burns and Simon

I finished The Americans on Hulu a few weeks ago and it was great.

I remember it being acclaimed at the time but it doesn’t seem to get brought up as much in discussions about good television.

2nd to last season has maybe a slight dip in quality but overall I loved it and felt they absolutely stuck the landing, which is starting to be important to me if a series has a significant time investment.

The Night Of was a really interesting show from 2016 on HBOMax that you might like.

Was thinking about starting this, didn’t realize JJ Abrams was involved, although Sawyer should have been a dead giveaway haha.
I will squeeze it in to my binge schedule soon.

I’ve been rewatching the Mission Impossible movies and he pops up in the beginning of Ghost Protocol (weirdly NOT the JJ MI movie) and it reminded me that they were trying to make him a movie star back then but it just wouldn’t take, just like with Riggins from Friday Night Lights

Producer shake up with JJ and a new guy on at Ghost Protocol. Also weirdly he did not produce III. I only remember this because that's when that series got consistent. Similar mid-franchise reboot to what happened with the Fast and Furious franchise, now that I type it out. Oh yeah X-Men too.

Well I thought it was cool at the time they switched directors on 1-4 (De Palma, Woo, Abrams, Brad Bird) then settled on Christopher McQuarrie for the final 4 which I think are the best ones.   They did that weird thing when they brought Renner in as the possible replacement too.

I used to like #2 a lot when it came out (probably because I was 14) but rewatching it, it’s pretty awful.   The only one that is so insistent on making Tom Cruise a sexy romantic lead - contrary to #7 where he’s kinda in a rom-com but it works really well because it’s not shot like a perfume commercial and allows itself to be fun (sorry John Woo!).

Seeing the final one on Wednesday, so no spoilers please!

It's hard for me to commit to watching a whole series, but I've had so many friends recommend it over the years and after seeing some SLAP folks back it, I think I'm going to dive in.

Also, has anyone see Mickey 17? I saw it just got added to Max. It has weird mixed reviews, but I also don't trust a lot of Rotten Tomato reviews these days.

It’s free, watch it.  What do you have to lose?   I didn’t love it, but I don’t necessarily regret seeing it and I know people who liked it more than me.

The wire is probably my favorite show and yes it is better than the sopranos. Everyone I tell about the wire either hasn’t seen it or didn’t really like it. I don’t get it.

Is bad thoughts that tom segura show? I used to be a fan of him and his whole sphere but lately I’m finding I can’t stand any of those comedians anymore.

Yes Bad Thoughts is Tom Segura , wasn’t too familiar with his work but I’m glad I watched.

I go back and forth between The Wire and Sopranos as my all time fave TV show, I have rewatched each several times and I’ll probably never get sick of both.
That was the golden age of HBO.

Apparently Scorsese didn’t fuck with Sopranos bc of the suburban Jersey aspect.   Saw a blurb of David Chase saying that, but didn’t investigate further

Could never watch any Segura, Kreischer, or any doofus from that world.

Just finished Season 1. Don’t feel like writing a novel like my previous post . Just wow so epic. Love the new setting for season 2.

Super random, S2 E2 @ 14:16 , some fat old timer wearing a Hawk hoodie with a skeleton graphic. Can already tell… this season gonna be wild
