Pro tip - my wife and kids went on a weekend trip and I texted my wife that instead of eating out a bunch in her absence, I bought some skate stuff on sale. She approved.

No guilt trip in the future for me.

Same here.

Does anyone else figure out how many pairs of wheels or shoes the cost of the thing/meal your contemplating buying could get you? I try to look at it as “perspective”

I wonder what a reasonable percentage of income is to spend on skating?
I can’t break a board to save my life (I think you have to land on it to do so, so them shits are safe as fuck around me). Shoes get kickflipped pretty terribly, but most last waaaay past when I want them to go. My gear crisis’ is really where I spend the money. Lifetime supply of shit. Not the right shit. Never the right shit. 3 setups in the trunk. All shit.

I mean, look at it as any other fitness activity. How much would you be spending if you were into crossfit instead? Or powerlifting? Or rock climbing? Etc. Still a bargain in comparison.

Oh for certain. I also get to interact/purchase stuff from people that I like a lot (at the shop level), and then (for the most part) buy from companies that from what I know about them, are ‘cool’. Harder to do that in most other hobbies imo.

We could all be super into mountain biking or road biking, and buying a new frame for $5k-$10k every other year. Mix in frequent parts and gear and you’re spending a small fortune. My living room might look like a small skateshop, but everything gets skated eventually

Or car tuning or motorcycle track days, fresh tires are expensive and you don't want to skimp out on your safety.

yup. as someone whos main hobby is Ultralight Backpacking where people regularly spend $600+ on tents and other items to cut literal ounces out of their gear, my skating budget is but a drop in the bucket

Basically what I’m hearing is we’re actually SAVING money by skateboarding and our friends and family should be THANKING us when we buy things. So ungrateful.

ik youre joking but its so true. i just finished my taxes and got $3k back and am doing some budgeting

$60 a board  2/month = $1440 a year
$40 for wheels x 3/pair a  year= $120 a year
$65 for trucks / year + $5 hardware = $70
$60 shoes 1/month = $720 a year

which leaves us with a grand total of $2350 at most for a guy who skates 4-6x a week. that's a very liberal number considering most people dont go through 2 boards a month and 3 sets of wheels in a year. if we bump it down to 1 board a month we get $1630. If we buy bargain shoes at $30 a pop, it brings it down to $1270. If we buy only $40 bargain boards at 1 per month, we get $1030 which is completely reasonable

i left out bearings and hardware bc those almost never break for me. if they do, your skateshop probably has free shit lying around you can pull

IK this is just rationalizing but even if you spend a lot on skating, it's still way cheaper than a lot of other activities like snowboarding.

What I've learned is that with some OCD you can make any sport expensive. But yeah overall skating isn't too bad. Disc golf is probably the cheapest sport I used to play, but even then I ended up buying 50x $20 discs and a nice bag. Mountain biking takes the cake, I have a $4k+ whip in the garage which is now starting to collect dust because of adult responsibilities. Not to mention protective gear, bike tools, clothing, hydration packs, etc.

For less than $200 you can have a skateboard that a professional would use.

Yeah man I own two semi-custom multi-thousand dollars bikes, but I can justify those a lot easier than I can justify spending that much on skateboard gear.

Even when I skated street 5x week and used a skateboard as a mode of transportation, I never went thru 4 sets of wheels per year. Jeeezuz. I got the gear madness when I came back to SLAP, but idk about spending multiple 1000s of dollars. No shame, but damn that's a lot of dough on skateboarding. I was buying new decks before I really needed them, but now that I'm back at it, I'm skating that shit til it's toast.

How do you get to skate so much that you go they gear so fast and also work, have families, etc? Again, not shaming, I just don't understand. I know its hard to not buy shit, consumeritis, I had to keep my hands in my pockets at the shop today, so I didn't buy a new shop deck, T-shirt, and hat that i thought were dope but didn't need.

i'll try to answer all of these

im 24 & spend maybe 2k a year on skate shit (as per my comment above). im single, so no money spent on family. also, i dont drink and don't eat out. bc im a data analyst, moneys not an issue in the first place. also being a data analyst, i work from home and only really do maybe 15-20 hours of "real" work a week, so i have a lot of time to go out and skate

why do i get 3-4 sets of wheels a year? i can tell the difference between 2-3 millimeters.
why do i skate 2 boards a month? i can tell when the grip has stopped being grippy or when a board has become soggy due to humidity, sweat or skating rough ground. its a rotten feeling to know that a trick isn't working because of your setup, i yearn for the days i could skate a board till it became disgusting and super chipped up

also i have terrible board madness. if i find a board on sale with my wheelbase from a woodshop i like, im gonna buy 4-5 boards on the spot

Before madness issues, and sadly I’m there, and have been, I think it’s fairly easy for me to go thru a pair of shoes and a deck, per month. And I’m trash. I basically just whittle a bunch of shitty kickflip attempts. Anyways, a deck, a pair of shoes, per month, from a shop (this is my own issue/I’m just not into buying stuff from daddies etc) is $1500+. Now I don’t end up skating that much, but I do end up on here too much looking at strangers boards and getting gassed up to go buy more shit. So yeah, I don’t think 4 sets of wheels in a year is even kinda weird.
You want to hear justifications…maybe I’m the only one, but I used to do drugs and drink. $50 on trucks, whenever I get the whim doesn’t seem that bad. It’s a problem, very many reasons, just not an ‘as bad’ kinda problem. But a symptom and all of that.
