Major skate video music supervision is less about finding new/obscure/lesser known songs and more about avoiding DMCA issues/having to pay too much for rights to a song.
[close]

This isn’t even a conspiracy it’s just true..

Has it always been true that they sort out music rights?   I don’t think someone was ever hired just to find good jams

It’s only true for the internet age where everyone is uploading their shit to iTunes/ Instagram/ YouTube/ etc where the big three labels who own everything can readily strike projects down if they haven’t paid for the rights. The responsibility of securing the rights goes to whoever’s tasked with editing the project, which is oftentimes the filmer too. Back in the VHS/ early DVD days no one gave a shit about paying money for rights, bc what was the likelihood of a big mainstream label coming across a skate video in the 90’s?

And I don’t think it was an issue when it was 90% punk bands that were happy for the exposure back then. Skate video music isn’t always some obscure band nobody in the Midwest ever heard of before anymore. I don’t even know if there’s such a thing as obscure music anymore. And if you were a big band back then, you were actually making money selling records so a video that would sell a few thousand copies at minimal profit probably wasn’t worth the effort to go after. Music clearance probably wasn’t an issue until hip hop became standard fare. Those major labels with no link to skateboarding were going to make sure they got paid.

No. It would be a conspiracy if both truck brands turned out to be made in the same factory/ have the same geometry. Or if the marketing for one company directly influenced you to try the other company’s product, when ultimately both companies are owned by the same person. What you are describing is just owning two sets of trucks.

Most pro skateboarders really don’t make a lot of money. For all the ones who competed in Rome, the rest were at home eating Roman noodles.

Who, the Vitellos? Sure, but my point remains, without the additional conditions (except the truck geometry thing, that was a joke) it’s not a conspiracy. It’s just owning two sets of trucks.

I don’t think it’s just the Vitellos. Jeremie Daclin alludes to it in his jenkem interview. Skateboard trucks are kind of a monopoly.

That sounds really interesting, I’m going to try to find that interview. Thanks.

And if we’re being honest, maybe I felt a bit defensive because it forced me to look at the ventures I’m currently skating, and my old indys on the shelf… collecting dust and staring at me with their accusing eyes!

My understanding is that Fausto created Venture and Thunder to grab a bigger share of the market so your first post isn't wrong. At one point, 3 of the 6 trucks on the market came from Emerico. 50% of the market is huge and all three of those brands are still going when other "Indy type" trucks are long gone. Rip yourself of before somebody else does.
