Dang, length is short for me. I like 31-31.75 length on my skinny decks (31.25 to me is my fave)

Ok

This.

The shortest board I can remember was a Clyde 23 board, sub 31. Was rad cuz Clyde/23, but I couldn’t skate it. Would just fling terrible looking nollie hards....31.25 the best

I feel like I've come home ! I'm a freak because I'm a big dude with big feet and I ride a 7.75. I think to me it just boils down to familiarity, I started in 96 when people used to tell me a 8inch board was big. I rode as small as a 7.5, but 7.62 was my jam, pretty much up until around 2005ish when I took a brief hiatus until 2009 or so.

Upon my return I was surprised that I was unable to find a board under 8 inches for most board brands. I mostly rode shop boards at 7.75 when I started getting back into skating but I noticed almost nobody else rode anything under 8. I even tried switching to 8 for a year or two and my flip tricks felt so sluggish and I just didn't like it. I ended up switching back a few years ago and found my skating has starting to progress again and it just feels right.

Im almost scared that they will stop making this size entirely, but glad that alot of the brands I will support make the size I want. So for all the dudes out there getting questioned at the skatepark about their board size MUCH LOVE.

Stepped on the 7.75 Real last night at the local shop. The thing looks like a toy the wb and overall length was way too tight🤢. They did have a few green eagles and a 7.875 baker that looked great though.

if Alien still made those 7.5 (or 7.625) x 31.25s like they did when AVE was new to the team, I would slay those boards

Yeah those were the best, rode a dipped black wenning 7.625 that was one of the best boards I ever had.

In this Nine Club highlight, Mason Silva talks about how he rides an 8.25 with a 13.8 wheelbase, and used to ride a 13.5 wheelbase.

Kelly mentions his board is a 13.75 wheelbase as well. He has mentioned elsewhere it is 7.75 width.

Chris Roberts also rides a 7.75x13.75, the g009 Crail shape.

Weird how the only wheelbases Real didn't drop are 13.5-13.8 wheelbase boards, since that's apparently what the pros are skating. Or do they already have those? The SEs have shorter wheelbases, but are they sub 14" short?

The model Mason's referring to is labeled 8.28 x 31.7 with a 14.12 wb (The Same Shape Mason Skates!)- which I have - the measurements are accurate. Could it be he doesn't ride what real says he rides, or could it be he's mistaken and hasn't actually measured his own setup? I'd believe either.

Oh man. That's classic.

Watch the clip. He says he rides 13.8, used to ride a "tiny" board that was 13.5, and that he is aware that the "standard" is 14ish.

He also refers to his previous mold as being PS-made, and how his board is really 8.25 even though Real sometimes markets it as 8.28. I get the sense that he pays attention to his setup.

My money is on Real's marketing just saying whatever to move boards. It could technically be the same mold, drilled with a different wheelbase.

I know mason rode that blue Jalopi AH board a lot before getting on real. It’s 8.28 with a 14 inch WB, I’m sure he was riding the production model if Dlx was just sending him boards.

I'm positive I've seen him state the 13.5-to-13.8 thing before, maybe in his first Nine Club. Tryna find it

The original thing I was trying to point out was that ALL THREE of those guys ride the same wheelbase

skating a sub 14" wb- how tall is he?

I've come to believe it's shoulder width, not height

No to de-rail this thread any further, but I'm super curious as to what the truth really is behind wheelbase. There definitely are a lot of pros/skaters in general that don't care about wheelbase and don't even know about it. It also seems like however that a lot of them are very particular and definitely have the "madness" and gear awareness. I remember watching some of those old Dew tour videos I think is what they were, where they had pros go over their setups and I remember they often mentioned that the board they skated was made shorter specially for them. Kind of seems like many if not most pros are riding their boards a lot shorter than what the companies are selling. I wonder why that is

Yeah, it's not uncommon to have one pro who has the madness and another who couldn't tell you what his wheelbase is. It all depends on what feels good to you and if you are generally a smaller person, then shorter wheelbases tend to work better. The sizes that companies produce are pretty strictly related to marketing, i.e. what sells.

I've found this interesting, from this interview with Paul Schmitt:

"What the consumer wants drives design decisions brands and pros make. Schmitt cites two of today’s top pros, who shall remain unnamed, as examples.

If you find one of their boards 7 7/8 inches wide or above, they aren’t riding it. These two guys have no problems with their 7 3/4 boards—but their brands can’t or won’t sell anything under 8 1/4. Salesmen and purchasing agents, not the pro riders, are making many of the decisions in these things.”

i honestly believe its based on your jumping stance. if you jump with your legs close together then short wb is optimal, wide stance and wb go hand in hand

Has anybody tried the crail G021 shape? 7.875x31.5 13.9WB. I’ve been interested in this shape but no locals in my town obviously want to carry much sub 8”

Wanted to see if anyone had any input before I had them order one.

If FA, or Quasi, or Alien, made those boards again....🥵whew. A square FA shape, on a 7.75, or 7.625, or....anything less than 8, would be so sick. I don’t really favor the look of square boards, but less than 8” square would be an instant buy. (When the same shape is 8.25 or whatever it feels even bigger, ew).

I’ve been watching too much Pops, O’Connor, Puleo footage, about to be back on 5.0 lo’s and 50s.

I'm assuming that FA, Quasi etc never make under 8? I've looked a few times and never seen one

Maybe 5 years ago I got a Habitat that was a 7.875 on PS wood that was the same square shape they use(d) for FA and Quasi stuff. Great board. Pretty sure they were doing them as recently as the NASA series but I don't know if Habitat has fully moved away from PS or not.

This is my 1999 (I think?) AWS "Ride Everything " Danny Way. 7.625 x 31.25. I also used the AVE 7.5 and Dill 7.75 (or 7.88) from this series, but this one was my fave so I held on to it to keep the size

And this is a Flip Boulala 7.63 x 31.25 from the end of 2001. This was the last thing my dad bought me before he died 5 weeks later (X-Mas complete). I can't believe I wore the wheels down that hard. Indy stage 8's (before black kingpin appeared), Spitfire 52 Bigheads but look more like 46 or some shit.

Was cleaning my basement area and just took a few pics.
