Opposite for me, FS are my go-to safety trick. The key is hang a bit more toe off for the front 180 and twist once you leave the coping.

Samesies. I feel most in control on FS disasters. I can do them backside too, but I have to work up to them literally every session, they never stick. No idea why, once I get one I can replicate them and even think to myself "oh yeah, this is how to do them", but for some reason I can't keep them from session to session.

This might be super dumb - but can you just take an insole from a shoe that you already skated and switch it into a brand new shoe to skip some of the break in? Any disadvantages to taking that route?
 
I'm not sure if insoles really like 'wear out' like the rest of a shoe or if they pretty much just stay good.

I do it all the time. The downside would be that the insole is potentially worn out, but on the other hand, it could be perfectly "broken in" for your needs.

I do it all the time. The downside would be that the insole is potentially worn out, but on the other hand, it could be perfectly "broken in" for your needs.

For shoes that are a little too tight, stiff or otherwise would give you blisters, pain and misery from new, using an old worn in insole really helps there, so when the shoe is nicely worn in or even on its way out, putting in the new insole can help to give it a little more support and keep the shoe going a bit longer as well.

Obviously if the sole is worn out, it is game over, but quite a few people have done this in the past and it has worked well to break in new shoes and keep older shoes going.

Some insoles are good for many pairs of shoes over and over, but some are almost done before the shoe itself is through.  Depends on the brand and I guess what the insole is made of too.

I love rotating insoles around to different shoes. Especially when I find brand X has a removable insole that I enjoy. I'll keep them until they're dust usually. My favorites are Etnies STI, State Footwear, and Emerica G6 insoles.

They allow you to break in new shoes quicker (fit and comfort is usually better) and squeeze a few drops out of some shoes that usually would be ready to trash like MBrimson said.

Here's a list of insoles I've used from brands that last long enough to move from shoe to shoe in no particular order:

I'm fairly consistent at both directions, but doing BS disaster on bigger stuff takes more guts for me. Personally, I think my FS are kinda gross but I toss one on the biggest QP most sessions just to retain them.

What's tripping you up?

It is funny with some shoes, at least trying on way too many shoes in skate shops or where I used to work, just to see what they are like, but I definitely could have used some of the insoles from various shoes over the years, way more than the shoes themselves.

What insoles were in the Koston shoes, cause they were amazingly thick and sponge like???  Maybe twice as thick as the other lunarlon insoles in Cons and Nike shoes, but in the same colour.

The G6 insoles are another one that come to mind, that were easily accessible with lots of shoes on clearance so it was almost cheaper just to buy the shoes for the insoles and give away the shoes with something else in them.

Both of those I never did go through with it, but it always interests me to pull out insoles and check / compare them.

Most recently the Last Resort looked pretty good, much like the Huf and Gravis insoles from way back when, but also the Habitat and Diamond shoes, which all resembled the first version of the Vans insoles, the thicker rubber feel material before popcush or ultracush or any of the ones out now.

If you get the opportunity to try a React insole in a Vans skate vulc you should give it a try. The insoles are the same height and I really liked them in Half Cabs.

Peanut butter and elbow grease works for regular sticker adhesive. I suspect it will do the same for grip tape

I have had and seen quite a few struggles with similar things, but I found it was just best to regrip straight over the residue and not try to clean it off.  This was always black or non clear grip, so if you are wanting to put clear grip or something a little more fancy in the grip cut out / art options on it, that might not be such a good idea.

Comes down to what will work fairly easily, vs what is just going to be a real time consuming pain that might not even give the desired results, if the clear grip is not going to stick well afterwards, which is what I found with some grip after cleaning off the board completely.  The cleaning products still left their own residue and took off the top graphic along with the old grip, for one setup I saw someone else try too.

Goo Gone left to soak for maybe 10 minutes max and then elbow grease and a rag should probably work also.

Bought a new unskated deck but it was gripped and I always do my scrap crap grip jobs. If I don’t it’s not my board.
@Mbrimson88 yeah, if I was going full grip it wouldn’t be an issue but there’s going to be lots of cuts so it’d just grab dirt and look like crap after a second of riding.

I’ve heard Ronson lighter fluid(liquid kind for zippos) can work on sticker residue but was hoping to hear from someone else that may have used it. If worse comes to worse I can just try an eraser wheel on it. I mean it works on cars for removing stickers, vinyl stripes, and double back tape but I’m worried it may burn the wood since it’s such a big area.

Personally, I will never regrip a board. The juice is literally never worth the squeeze given the process.

That said, I'm taking notes in case some freak scenario occurs where I do have to regrip to keep skating until a new board can be set up

I skated that board for a long time after that, and now I'm def on the regrip camp whenever a deck outlasts a grip. It's actually not that huge an effort once you get the hang of it.

I think regripping can be strangely quite an enjoyable process, especially if you're trying out/setting-up secondhand decks from eBay etc. I got into the habit of doing it quite regularly when trying out new deck sizes regularly on the cheap. Hairdryer, fresh Stanley blade, (some patience) and you're good to go.

I also back the comment that cheaper/free grip isn't really worth it, I made the mistake of specifically using Enuff griptape for quite along time when re-gripping until recently, I found it went quite easy on my shoes in terms of wear and tear and thought that was perfect for me. However, when I eventually stuck with the same set-up for a while I discovered it went bald pretty quickly and resulted in re-gripping being required. Moved on to Jessups now and it seems good/more durable!

I am aware the sizing is different across various shoe models. But is there a sizing difference within the same shoe model? Etnies Marana for example. Does that shoe always fit the same, regardless of color or material?

I guess my only advice would be to start back small and work them up, even scooting em on banks or mellow spots might help get confidence back on doing the motion. Could always skate perpendicular to a curb and do ollie 180 lip/disaster, that could help solidify foot placement. or deck check roll-ins might be helpful.

I've skated 10+ and own 10+ maranas currently and I'd wager over 95% of my Maranas have fit identical to each other. I have a couple models that are a bit more snug in the toe, but one of those is a full leather, and the other is suede like every other colorway They usually release. Leather may fit tighter than usual but suede should be consistent each time with slight variability.

That toe cap on the Marana is great but can be rough to break in for some since it can make the shoe fit tighter than expected at first

re: regrip...what helps me is cross gripping ie. horizontal, pieces are easier to get off than full grip. . Its not a bad idea especially over the winter....

On front d/back d....back d is an extended axel stall, front d is rather a pushed out frontside grind ie. slash or ollie from down low up to disaster....IMO they are very different tricks.

i'd agree with that. for bs (slide or stall) I usually just whip the tail around, with a lil bump off the cope, find that center and take it in. fs I'll tend to ollie as opposed to bumping the coping, for disaster anyway. Ollieing into a fs lipslide on a qp is kinda funky to me, mostly bump or edge out to the sldie

Yes those in between areas end up a big mess.  Even when people don't peel off the warning sticker fully and the sticker residue leaves a mess in between racing stripes or similar, it looks messy.

I often pick up boards from others that are sometimes brand new, great deck, terrible grip job or just grip in a brand / colour / graphic or some weird thing on the grip that means the grip has to go, so off it comes and there is no way I can get a lot of whatever is still stuck to the board off, especially with Shake Junt grip, so although I still use pieces to give lines, I have zero gaps whatsoever on those boards.

That might be an option, although it can be a pain if you are cutting things up and like gaps between them.


Also totally get it when you say, if you haven't gripped it how you usually do, it is not your board - even having lines in different areas to where I often do makes a board weird to ride, like it is someone else's board and not my own.
