Riding a normal popsicle, have any of you ever experienced that you suddenly start popping better ollies on the nose? Not meaning switch, but riding the board in your normal stance and using the nose as tail (like Ryan Decenzo apparently does all the time)?

This happened to me today. I'm seriously thinking of giving this a try with my current setup.

personally i think rails are overall unnecessary, unless you're going for Grosso distance rock n roll slides, or you just like them

I never really liked the feel of rails on disasters and rock to fakies. I skated one board with rails until it died and i set a new one up; the rails are probably still on it

Both these replies have valid points, so although it is an interesting addition to a board, I also don't really like the feeling of rails compared to the concave of any normal board on coping, and that is coming from a bowl / transition lifer.

...

I love rails today. Im a try to keep one bloard railed one regs always

I have a transition board with rails, not necessary but it makes sliding easier because the board is flat.  Lipslides, boardslides to fakie.  Also the contact point of the board is lower so you can lipslide noping.  Sort of dumb nuanced stuff but I understand why people skate them.

OP, are you good enough for needing rails in a bowl?

Properly applied, they assist in curb trick combos.

Thanks all for the replies.  I didn't know if rails were most helpful for beginners, advanced skaters, or both. So given that I wasn't sure what "good enough" was.  Looks like its completely a preference thing and unlocks some specific tricks/combos.  I'll leave em off, thanks again.

^ also no harm in giving rails a shot just because you feel like it? You might not slide 15 ft and around a corner but you might feel like you are.  It’s your setup do whatever you want with it

What came first deep concave or puffy cup sole shoes?
It's been long i can't remember.
People complain about lack of board feel but was the cup sole developed due to the deeper concave??

Talking skate brands not nike dunks...

Not all boards had super deep concave DMs at the time but I recall Elements in 1996-97 starting to be super fucking deep. I remember having a Reese Forbes Element that was basically vert ramp shaped. I thought it would make me kickflip better. Came off of Girl decks, which were flat. I do remember Aliens having steeper kicks and not super deep concave and skated those for a while because I learned switch heels on one. Then back to Girl/Choc and Tum Yeto were always fairly flat.

we always said element and AWS decks were the ones you wanted for the most pop and/or flipped the best due to the concave and kicks

Was going through storage and pulled out some shoes from glory days past…

I know pals like to save their decks but does anyone else keep their favorite shoes that have been fully skated in.  I had some ipath cats thats were just used for work, washed them and they still look good to wear and skate.  Dont know if I should keep them in storage or display them

Are 8.25 decks way lighter than 8.5 ? I’ve tried a couple of 8.25 and I’ve been very surprised about the light sensation / almost toy vs my 8.5

Or are girl decks heavy in general ?

From what I see on tactics, thunder hollow light have 3g difference between 8.25 and 8.5 so it can’t come from that ?

Assuming that the .25 is taken off the middle of a 32" board, you would have 8 less square inches of 7 ply wood. I'm guessing that would be the reason, also assuming that all other aspects remain constant(i.e. factory so same wood and glue, same shape)

Something like this? Materials readily available at your hardware store, all you need is an electric screwdriver / drill to countersunk your screws into into the angle iron.

If you want something more permanent go with a cinderblock ledge, more effort and material but it would last way longer and probably slide better too. I'd still try to screw in the angle iron into the concrete, the angle iron will eventually bend and liquid nails won't hold it anymore.

If you're going to build anything go to a steel supply store that has various angle iron. Get one with a rounded edge. It's not any more expensive and it will grind/slide better. Most American box stores only sell sharp angle that is overpriced.

So I want to preface this question with the note that I am not trying to criticize the following people, but I just don't really get it.

Are people with severe bushing madness REALLY inhibited by not having these wacky combos of obscure setups? I totally get wanting replacement soft/hard bushings depending on basic weight and turning preferences. I'm not sure I've ever had deck or truck madness, but those make a lot of sense to me. Bushing madness doesn't. I can't imagine a scenario where I was like "Yah I woulda landed this if I had a Riptide 94 lower rear with an Ace low hard top and my front with a Thunder conical shaved down 2mm lower and an Indy aftermarket black top with Krux pivot cups.

I think a lot of it stems from the frustration of not being able to get their trucks to what they want easily with just basic single brand parts, so the evolution of trying this and that and then keeping with whatever they currently have with the products available at the time.

That very specific modification of their gear, compared to buying a set of trucks, skating them as is giving the bushings time to break in nicely, or just as some people I know say, "New trucks suck, so the first few sessions suck, then they get used to however they feel" or something similar, from a guy who rips harder than anyone else I know, so I take that as an example only, but I also see a few things I think he could have fixed to make his board skate better, as much as he doesn't want to hear it.

For others, maybe the changing to inverted kingpins or other mods, then leads to increasing bushing mod or change ups, so one other person I know, no bottom washers, cut down bushings, trimmed to whatever height according to whatever bushings he can get his hands on, the softer the better, truck down to axle, kingpin down so low he has to cut bushings otherwise they just don't fit, etc.  It works for him, so I guess just replacing hangers when he needs is easier than trying to get used to a brand new set of trucks.

I have boxes of the old Indy low head bushings, which work nicely, started on new trucks, kingpin nuts fairly flush, then tighten down as bushings break in, so then I have the kingpin nuts a few threads down, which I then angle grind off to never have clearance issues and the bushings last the life of the truck, so that is my simple enough fix, even though some people have said that is a lot of work to get things going.

Guessing that is not quite what you are asking about, but when people do tinker a lot with a few things, more so than having a whole skate shop of bushings to try, I think they are more likely to be trying this and that, just to get their own board working just how they like it, more than finding the exact right bushings from twenty to fifty plus options on the market, which is both costly and unnecessary for the most part.

Gone since 1988.  I talk too much about skateboards.  Sorry.

Yeah I've kept a few of my old skated shoes that Im sentimental to for whatever reason, still have my first ever pair of skated shoes too! I've kept almost every board I've skated with plans to do something with them all one day.. but for now they're just taking up a bunch of storage space at my parent's place lol

@Xen would be able to answer that one.

I looked and although it is noted the Ace low top is 10 mm, Indy is 10.5 mm and Bones tops are 10 to 10.5 mm, people have said they are a bit shorter than Indy so I am guessing that is about right.  Bottom bushing is 13 mm.

From the Slappy Trucks thread:

Since the top bushings were immediately shredded, I Put some Indy 90a standard cylinder bushings in these bad boys after the first session. Now they are my favorite truck by far! As if Indy and Ace had a beautiful bastard son.

I use Indy bushings as well.

Just put some Indy bushings in mine as well. Do they change the geometry at all or are they roughly the same size as the stock slappy bushings?

Bottom bushings have the same height, so geometry is the same. Top bushing is higher so maybe less kingpin clearance. Sinclair confirmed it via IG message.

Pretty much, the slappys might be a 1mm or so shorter.

You WILL shred the stock bushings using the provided top washer - why they ship like that is beyond me since it's a known issue/all over their socials (to where sinclair said they were going to change the washer....but didn't).

The bushings are really nice tho if they stay in one piece. REALLY nice in Ventures.

Thanks to both @Mbrimson88 and @Xen. I recently got the standards and really like these after a short testride. They work really well with my Huffer. Front truck top bushing got slightly shredded right away so I changed the top washers to the ones that come with Aces. I was thinking if these stock bushings get totally destroyed I might swap to Ace lows top and see how it goes.

Well it would it would be more wheel clearance than af1 by 1mm, I don’t believe they are as pushed in, so the geometry is more similar to Indy. And they have more grind clearance. I was thinking same thing “what’s the point “ up until recently. I actually really want to try them now cause I got back on Indy’s and I don’t like the squeak and I want something slightly more stable so I think it is actually hitting a pretty good sweet spot. Someone here mentioned that they are the best truck for not wheel biting.

If you like the Indy/Ace/Theeve/ML style of turn, Slappy give you:

Pros
Best grind clearance out.
Best grind. period. fight me.
Faster turn than Indy.
Not squirrelly like ACE.
Quick return and stable on center.
Forged plates are the same height as cast
Less wheelbite than anything I've skated

Cons
Shitty top washer.
Heavy just like a comparable indy or ace
Height isn't for everyone.
Forged plates are the same height as cast

I havent skated mine much yet, just a quick test ride on my front yard. They felt pretty surfy (between ace/indy), stable, lighter than what Ive been riding lately (af1, stage 4). Im going skating today and try to grind these as much as possible to get the feel of how they grind. Oh yeah, the top bushing was cut right away because the washer's edge is really sharp and eats into that bushing like a knife. That sucks. I swapped both top washers and no issues so far.

Every time I see you have good things to say about a truck I want to go out and buy a pair to try. But then I remember I'm weird and actually like forged Thunders and it's likely not a good idea.

Same. First started to record the workouts when I was losing weight, now I don’t care much anymore, but still turn it on to make sure I don’t go over my max heart rate. (220-age=178) :(

What I wish they would add (and I’ve asked Apple before) is to add a distance tracking to the skate workout.
Thanks y’all. It’s been fun.
