Pals, I realize this is gonna sound pretty dumb... but how exactly do axles get bent? I've bent 3 pairs of Venture hollows in the past 6 months. Before that I rode the same pair of trucks, also Venture hollows, for well over a year without any issues. Nothing about the way I skate has fundamentally changed, I even skate way less than I did before, so you'd think I could make stuff last longer. Instead these damn axles keep getting bent. Is it just bad luck? Does it happen on impact on ledges? Or when I stomp my huge gap tricks (i. e., ollies and 180s down 5 stairs)? Any insight is greatly appreciated.
I don't think I have ever bent any axles in my life, but in recent years I know a few guys who always retire trucks earlier than others would because they have bent axles and can feel it / see it. These guys are not the sort of people who I usually associate with big drops or heavy skating - skinny and tall, more than anything - yet I see set after set with the back toe side more bent than anything, which just seems weird.
Happens on Venture, Thunder and Indy from the last few years, so I would not even say it is any one specific brand either, axles on standard, hollow and ti variations, so it happens with everything for him.
As to others, sure some people are heavy in the landings, or do drops or whatever from heights, stairs or things I could easily see would bend axles or break boards. Even a board focus can cause other things, but I think I am getting a little off track.
Not sure why, but I do think hollow axles bent the quickest for one guy I know too, so there might be some issue with the metal, the heat treating or who knows what. Things have changed in production location in recent years - gone from SF, USA down to Mexico, so maybe there is something in that too.
At least it isn't Indy ti axles breaking for you - that is a crazy one, but a whole different story, as per the other thread about it.
* I forgot to say, any bent axles I hammer back to approximately straight and recycle them onto kids boards, or loan boards and for the most part they hold up great and don't have issues. I know once bent, they would be weaker, but even for adults skating them again, they seemed fine and I only had one set I had to hammer straight again after someone heavier skated that board.
