How steep are the kicks and concave on a sci fi fantasy board?
They vary significantly. I have ridden 8 of them in the past and I have 5 on ice with 2 decks in rotation now. They are mostly BBS generic shapes, which range from the mellow side of medium to pretty fucking steep. I rarely mail order them. When the shape I like is in at my locals I go up and like a true weirdo I take everything I want to ride that is that shape and I stack them on top of each other and find the mellowest kicks and buy 2-3 at a time.
I will say tho that historically speaking Frog and Pass~Port seem to use mellower versions of the same shape. IDK if they request it or it's my luck. Sci-Fi also has 2 8.25 shapes one seems to be a version of the Baker 8.25 and is extremely mellow.
Yeah, this for sure.
BBS press four boards at a time, so the top board is going to be steeper than the bottom board every single time, but even then, I am sure the different presses have different molds, as some are really mellow, others really steep, going by over a dozen of the exact same board, same graphic, same run, etc.
Re Sci Fi and BBS in general - I would say most are about 23-24 degrees in the kicks all up, some more mellow at 21-22 degrees, occasionally some down around 20-21 but also some up above 24-25 degrees in the kicks too.
That is to say the first number is usually the tail 23 degrees, then the second number is the nose 24 degrees.
I have no idea if some brands do request different concaves or they just get what they get, or the luck of the draw sometimes means some runs are more mellow, some are more steep, but it seemed most of the usual boards in some sizes are a bit more mellow (DLX 8.38 shape) compared to the other brands / generic BBS 8.5 boards, or even some of the 8.25 boards.
Of a whole stack of Generator or BBS blanks, I went through and listed I through to IV on them like DLX does, just so I could easily show people the difference in them, which was pretty significant. Some people were tripping on it, that I could actually show them differences in the same boards, but I guess I have been around enough of them so I had more than a fair idea what they were like.
Long story short, if you don't really care that much, order whatever and away you go, but if you are more particular, then it is best to go in store to check out boards, stand on them, buy one that works for you, more so than lucky dip via internet order.
* Sorry I do get a bit carried away with board specs and info, but I hope this helps some.
