I used to buy sample shoes from skateshops. Is that still a thing nowadays? It feels like I haven't seen any in a long time. Has the shoe game changed so much that there is no longer need for it? My local used to have these sample sales and there were always lots of shoes to decide from the basic skate brands. Maybe like ten fifteen years ago. Granted now people mainly wear athletic brands rather than "skate" brands like DC, Emerica, Lakai etc... So maybe there is no need for it because people have been wearing the same models for years now.. I'm just interested to hear from someone working in a skate shop.

i'm sample size too (kind of, some shoes fit me in a 9 others i'll need a 9.5) and i still run into samples from time to time but i buy them from weird sources and i've never seen a sample pair in a skateshop. samples are surely still out there but i don't think skateshops can or would sell them, i mean the sample pairs always have "SAMPLE NOT FOR SALE" or something similar written on the inside of the shoe somewhere

Sample products - not just shoes, but everything including tshirts, flannels, hoodies, caps, beanies and other clothing - were often offered to some skate shops who had bigger accounts, or were negotiated to be provided after the reps had done the rounds with them.

It was more in the "special deals" department than anything else, so when certain shops would get new sample products in, I often spent way too much money getting some really good stuff, which often never made it to normal retail shops.

As for shoes, I had seen a few different brand reps come visit back in the day when I was at a much bigger chain store, usually a few heavily loaded super size travel bags stacked completely full of all the different shoe options for coming ranges, but none ever were sold off that I know of.  Some of the team riders got a lot of samples too, now I recall seeing some of their packages, almost like they choose people based on their foot size, so they could move all those samples, or maybe the best skaters tended to have smaller feet than the rest of us.

Vans stores often had all their samples on a special table out the front of their clearance / sale stores - size 9 was sample size, so too small for me, but I knew a lot of people who were size 9 so I got a lot of cool shoes to pass on to them as well.  Again so many shoe variations that might never make it to market or come in other sizes.

That was a while back now, but I did see a few samples at a Vans outlet store not that long ago, but nothing that really looked like anything I would get to pass on to others, no pro shoes or anything that even looked good to skate in, compared to the amazing sample drops that I used to see anyway.

Gone since 1988.  I talk too much about skateboards.  Sorry.

At about 1:05 ish tiny little nugget about people selling samples in the UK

I def remember random shops selling samples in the late 00s early 10s. Especially supra and gravis/habitat I always assumed it was just all the shit sales people brought around to shops eventually ended up in one place

Mainly a question for the mods

I moved and compiled all my old skate mags; Trasher/ TWS/ SLAP/ Skateboard mag from 1999-2017ish and am about to scan them all into my personal server.

Question: would it be cool to share the links publicly on the forum once I uploaded them all?

just got my first pair of swiss. If I'm gonna run them in my daily driver, should I use spacers? I'm fairly low impact (never broken a board) but I'm at like 225 right now.

I've never broken a bearing - am I overthinking this and should I just treat em like my several sets of reds that I use in kick-around boards and cruisers (I do a simple clean every few months, disassembly-style every year or so)?

For some, spacers are totally useless, for others, mandatory, so it just depends on what you like to do.

If you run your axle nuts with some play, it is here or there, but if you run them tight, then spacers are a must, but I don't like the dead / flat sound that it makes so I always have some play.  The sideways load you put on them will be offset a bit by having spacers, but generally I don't feel like I need them in there at all any more, but I used to keep them in all my Swiss bearings - the sets come with spacers so why not use them - that was my thinking.

It doesn't help that my wheels usually offset the bearings when the spacers push one bearing out a bit when I push the other side right in, but doing them up super tight and then loosening off a quarter turn is what some people I know swear by.  Sort of squeezes the spacer to fit within the wheel bearing center.

Choice is yours.

Why did you do that? And why to the dumb ass kid? I went through a purge phase and donated mine to a thrift store. Regretted it about five years later, so I’m not judging you for your choice at the time.

 both of you, fret not:

The mags at the thrift store made a thrifter's day and are now safely back on a shelf. Same for the dumb ass kid, they got picked off the curb.

I just have way too much stuff in my house!!! I hadn't looked at them in like 10+ years
I dont know why I suddenly had the urge to check some out again
I actually have more of an interest to catch up on more recent skate mags cause I haven't really read anything hardly in the past 15 years or so. there was a time I would get like 3-4 mags a month sometimes! you could get like big brother, transworld, thrasher all at the same 7-11. Plus we had canadian skate mags.

Was it a big regret for ya’ll to donate your old skate mags? I mostly keep mine (circa 2007-2015) as a bookshelf placeholder but I haven’t read them in years..sometimes I think it’ll be nice to get nostalgia for what were the golden years for me but well…I haven’t. The trip stories and interviews read the same after a while and I don’t have any controversial interviews (ala Peter Hewitt) that folks may want to share/read

I did that same for years and had to move at the last minute last month, and moving them was a big pain in the ass...and now having to store them since I dont have as much shelf space for anything but my books.  I put them into a wheely storage bin and they weigh a fucking ton.

kinda of sucks to figure out that its too much energy behind them for nostagia that isn't really worth it anymore.  I got a proper scanner and decided to give them all a high quality scans and will donate them to a local skate shop.  Probably will be keeping some like the RIP Dylan Thrasher and TWS Keenan issues

I kept around 8 mags between 98-04 that had special meaning, and I think they got destroyed in a hurricane flood in parent's storage unit. Kind of bummed, but thankful for digital prints if I ever get the itch to go track it down and read it again.

Two particular ones I wish I still had:
1. The very last Big Brother where Dave Carnie kind of put off "fuck it" vibes with what he wrote in there. I just remember cherishing it because I knew it was the last.
2. Transworld Green cover that showed Andrew Reynold's frontside flip over the rail from The End.
Thanks y’all. It’s been fun.

There are things like King Skate Mag, Neighbourhood, SBC that exist in some form, but you have to order them I think or buy them from select core shops (which havent existed where I live in small town ontario for the past decade)

I still have all the mags I bought.
I don't look at them yet can't let them go, too emotional.
If I had to that would be to something like Look back library but there's no such thing here.
I'd keep the early Skateboarders though, best mag ever.
And early Sugars.
Crazy to think there's no more mags in France, also crazy that I live in a big city and it's like skateboarding does not exist.
The times they have a-changed.

Yea, for the longest time I felt the same, but this last move really did a number on me physically.    When I finished moving into my new place and could only find a storage bin to place them in, I knew it was time to do something with them.

In scanning these old issues, Im realizing that most of it can be let go.  The nostalgia that I think I am holding onto really doesn't have the same meaning now a days.  There are certain style choices of the past that are fun to see, but a lot of the tricks are being done on higher levels these days.

I think its still awesome thrasher is still in print, but outside of cover shots, there isn't that much discussion on the forum about the latest issues.

I donated my mags after living out of a duffel bag for about a year; I was young and naive. Purged a lot of belongings at the time. I definitely rebought most of them and more some years later, then realized I didn’t want to keep them intact once the nostalgia wore off.

And the moving. Oh yeah. That’ll make you wanna toss everything.

I went through and kept what I really liked and I use different pics for art projects. Got some ads on my walls too.

It was definitely rad for a time to relive it all, but actually as I age the nostalgia is less.

Thank you for the reassurance @@botefdunn All skate mags go to bookshelf heaven…

Would I be correct in thinking that Venture Lows with a forged baseplate (V-Hollows/V-Lights) are the lowest readily available trucks still in production? And they measure at 47mm in height?

I assume there aren't any other truck options that are lower unless anyone knows otherwise? I've seen Tensor Mag Lows for sale here and there but wasn't sure if they were still actually being manufactured or just old stock.

Any help is appreciated!

Yes that is correct about the height of the venture lows. I personally wasn't interested in riding anything by other brands that aren't on the chart in my signature, but I am riding Lurpivs right now and really like them  8) (55mm beasts)

They vary significantly. I have ridden 8 of them in the past and I have 5 on ice with 2 decks in rotation now. They are mostly BBS generic shapes, which range from the mellow side of medium to pretty fucking steep. I rarely mail order them. When the shape I like is in at my locals I go up and like a true weirdo I take everything I want to ride that is that shape and I stack them on top of each other and find the mellowest kicks and buy 2-3 at a time.

I will say tho that historically speaking Frog and Pass~Port seem to use mellower versions of the same shape. IDK if they request it or it's my luck. Sci-Fi also has 2 8.25 shapes one seems to be a version of the Baker 8.25 and is extremely mellow.

Who exactly is the inspo for kids doing safety hands / caution hands? I heard it was from Cherry but I can only assume Sean Pablo? Or are people trying to imitate Rieder?

Yeah, this for sure.

BBS press four boards at a time, so the top board is going to be steeper than the bottom board every single time, but even then, I am sure the different presses have different molds, as some are really mellow, others really steep, going by over a dozen of the exact same board, same graphic, same run, etc.

Re Sci Fi and BBS in general - I would say most are about 23-24 degrees in the kicks all up, some more mellow at 21-22 degrees, occasionally some down around 20-21 but also some up above 24-25 degrees in the kicks too.

That is to say the first number is usually the tail 23 degrees, then the second number is the nose 24 degrees.

I have no idea if some brands do request different concaves or they just get what they get, or the luck of the draw sometimes means some runs are more mellow, some are more steep, but it seemed most of the usual boards in some sizes are a bit more mellow (DLX 8.38 shape) compared to the other brands / generic BBS 8.5 boards, or even some of the 8.25 boards.

Of a whole stack of Generator or BBS blanks, I went through and listed I through to IV on them like DLX does, just so I could easily show people the difference in them, which was pretty significant.  Some people were tripping on it, that I could actually show them differences in the same boards, but I guess I have been around enough of them so I had more than a fair idea what they were like.

Long story short, if you don't really care that much, order whatever and away you go, but if you are more particular, then it is best to go in store to check out boards, stand on them, buy one that works for you, more so than lucky dip via internet order.

* Sorry I do get a bit carried away with board specs and info, but I hope this helps some.

Gone since 1988.  I talk too much about skateboards.  Sorry.
