Was thinking of trading some gently used Indy's for some decks upon this idea I was looking to identifying their sizes. So I have a few with roman numerals (IIII IV III) I get the newer ones have 139 144 149 159 etc... but what about the roman numerals can someone explain?

Indy used to print the "stage" on the trucks, that's what the roman numerals indicate

Would you try lurpiv hollow or Slappy low first?
Drunk bought them thinking that trying more trucks would be the best thing to do and now I’m worried about  loosing sessions getting used to something new 😅 love the stability of my royal + hard ace bushings flushed but not a fan of the turn.
I’m really hyped by the design of the lurpiv but a bit worried they’ll be squirrelly which I didn’t like on aces af1

I would definitely recommend the Lurpiv first. Slappy is just an ace clone, they feel really similar in my opinion. There's more reviews in the Lurpiv thread, but most people's experience is that they're extremely stable but still allow a really deep turn, not squirrelly at all. The major drawbacks are kingpin clearance and the height of the truck.
If you see offensive comments, just let it go into one eye and let it out of the other eye, no tears and not sadness or anger.

I’ve always sort of just been a one setup at a time guy, which since getting serious again +/-3 years ago has been Thunder 151s on various 8.75” shapes and I have no qualms. For some reason though lately I’m feeling the draw to try Indy 159’s but I’m worried that this is the jumping off point…

Pro’s of buying them: Fun to try something new, and I might like them more.

Cons: I’m worried there is no going back once I introduce this variable. Does every new deck need to be tried on both sets now? Currently my gear does not cross my mind at all during sessions, but would it now be partly on if the other trucks would feel better?

Thoughts?

im guessing the decks with the roman numerals are REAL, Anti Hero, or Krooked boards
It just tells you what position they are in the press. I feel like I always get this wrong but I believe the number 1 in the press is the steepest and the 5 is the flattest cause its at the bottom and the weight flattens it out? or its the other way around. no other brand does this numbering system as far as I know.

the 139,144, 149 etc for Indy is actually the Hangar Size in millimeters. so you have Indy 149 is 5.8" hangar, axles are about 1.35" each, which leaves you somewhere close to 8.5" which is the deck that lines up perfectly with this truck. Lurpiv does this too but thier hangars are slightly bigger (140, 145, 150 etc)
[close]
Thank you for that informative explanation but I was just referring to Indy trucks identifying, maybe my explanation was lost somehow. They've got roman numerals on the inside of the hanger no other identifying markers.

Size markers pre-China production.
IV = 149 (8.5 axle)
IIII = 144 (8.25 axle)

A tape measure from tip to tip on the axle should confirm.

Same here. I'm in love with my Lurpivs. Clearly the biggest drawback is the kingpin clearance but is not that dramatic. Regarding height I skated Indy's for ages so 55mm felt like home. Unless you specifically want a low truck go with Lurpivs.
Sir, I'm going to politely, but firmly, ask you and your common sense to leave this establishment.

Thanks ! Will definitely try them first then :) they seem pretty light too : 341g with washers and nuts size 145
I’m just worried about the size. I chose 145 for a 8.375 bbs board following the lurpiv chart but I see everyone in the setup sub riding 150 on 8.25 😳. Should I add some washers on the inside (how many?) even though it seems to be the perfect size on their chart

Try what you have and then adjust if you don't like it. Don't work yourself up about gear adjustments before you've actually ridden anything. That's a dark road to go down, and yes, I speak from experience here.

I love my 150 on 8.25. I put a washer on the inside since there was to much axle poking out from the nut for my liking.

Richard Skidder has it right, with the correct info re the numbers, but they are all Stage 11 trucks, just the different sizes.

On mine, the 139, 149, 159 and 169 were all fairly easy with the normal numbers III, IV, V and VI, then when the 144s came out, they had made it different (not used by the old Roman way) and had IIII.

All this was current from when the Stage 11 first came out in 2013 through until 2018 when they moved production to China and decided to put the actual size number on the hanger edge where it is now.

Prior to that there were no numbers on the inside of the trucks that I know of, certainly nothing on any of my old ones, of which I have way too many.

An easy mistake to make though, so no worries there.

Gone since 1988.  I talk too much about skateboards.  Sorry.

Thanks for the feedback ! I hope mine won’t be too narrow, should be fine though as it’s supposed to be 145 for 8.25 to 8.5 on their eshop? I also found a chart where they say 150 so I’m a bit confused
I never really tried different truck sizes on the same board so I don’t know how much of a difference itd make

Maybe I should juste skate what I have yeah 😄

Consistency in a setup is a very powerful thing! Here's what I'd do: get a beater deck and put the 159's on that, then cruise around on them for a session, not neccessarily popping tricks, just getting a feel, maybe some slappy's / go-tos nothing crazy. Then skate as normal in the thunders. If you ever find yourself saying 'huh i wonder how this trick / board feels on the indys' sure, go for it, but having that consistent setup that you've stuck with for years is irreplacable! Maybe that's just me...

If you do get a set of  Indy 159's try to get the older ones before they moved to China they'll have a stamp on the inside of the hanger, the recent materials have definitely taken a nose dive for quality, I wouldn't want anyone to have a set of trucks break randomly. As someone above stated get a beater board and cruise around, I was an avid Indy fan before I noticed their recent debacle with quality then I switched to thunders and eventually cruised around on ventures which for the life of me I thought I was done but they surprisingly have a better turn radius, that's just me though.

Think of the 145 as 8.25 and the 150 as 8.5
In my case I like the trucks wider than my board. You should be ok.

Two questions about this screenshot I took of Troy Gibson (3:32 from the Violet promo):

1. What exactly gives some violet boards this look? It seems like either the graphic or the top ply color wraps around the edges, and it looks cool as shit, even when chipped away and not pure black. Do other board companies do this? If I get any board from another board company that has a black top ply (I haven't found any), will it look like this?

2. What's up with black shit all over his shoes. I've noticed this in other clips too over the years, but not common enough where it's obvious. My shoes have never worn like that.

I've never had Dunks and found these with 40% not crazy about the cw bit for that price it works for me. Question is that Czech Nike website states to buy + .5 in this specific cw. I trust more in pals than Nike. Anybody tried these particular ones?
Other pair with 40% are those from the electric pack which I can't tell if I like or hate.

Ha yes, and yes.

To note, it is also easy to spray paint the edge of any board in whatever colour you want, as many people have done over the years to give it a little bit more zing.  Usually spray from the top side (grip side up, before you put grip on) so the graphic doesn't get much or any paint on it, but you can still get pretty much the whole edge.

Creature used to have neon green sides from the woodshop.  Zero used to (and still did with Jamie Thomas doing it himself more recently) have orange and some other colours on the sides too.  A little practice and it is fairly easy to do and not get too much paint on there to make a mess, but definitely enough to have a cool colour round the edge.

As to shoes, I often spray my shoes black, but put tape around the white trim so the whole upper is black and the white edge remains, but a number of times over the years, pro guys would maybe get weird shoe colours in their packages and just spray the whole shoe black.  I think Andrew Reynolds did it so often the Emerica brand brought out a whole line of shoes that were sprayed black at one point, so the white trim was all black and wore away like that too.  It was a little bit funny trying to explain to customers why the shoe looked like it had been spray painted, but they sold well and then more people started doing that to their own shoes anyway.

Gone since 1988.  I talk too much about skateboards.  Sorry.

I’m skating a pair of the electric pack dunks and love them. Love how the safari pattern wears as you skate them. If you’re unsure just do this. Swap out those weird blue laces for the black ones (they’re included) and it transforms the shoe into a legitimately very nice dunk.

Limo does full dip boards with colored plies. My friend had an all black dip that had purple and pink plies under and it looked awesome.

I would say so. They are a bit narrow and uncomfortable at first but after a few sessions they break in and fit much better. Love the way they fit now.

1 - full dipped board

2 - spraypainted the shoes black

8.25/5.6s?

troy is very excellent at skateboarding

Ok

Thoughts?

As someone above stated get a beater board and cruise around, I was an avid Indy fan before I noticed their recent debacle with quality then I switched to thunders and eventually cruised around on ventures which for the life of me I thought I was done but they surprisingly have a better turn radius, that's just me though.

i cannot speak to the change in manufacturing quality, i think my 159s were musa.
i got into the wide ass truck thing in 2014ish, wasn’t skating a bunch, way more interested in buying shit and trying it out. lots of madcap experiments.
i’m not sure what the de-facto truck size was in 1987, 147? 157? no idea.
then i quit for several years and tried again 1994 and everything was tiny. i say all that to say that i don’t know why, but ive had generally good experiences with 8.75 trucks. i like my 6.1s, and i liked 159s, and hollow 151s, and of course classic 55s. all good. at a certain point they don’t help me with my 2 mph nollie flips so i quit them.

159s are sick, and the best indy, in my experience. something about the weight, height, width ratio clicked, for me. maybe because they turn slower and are thus more stable? idk
