I usually ride the 8.38 x 32.25 with the 14.5 wb, so I am guessing this is the one you are talking about.

Generally it depends on the brand, as for some like the DLX 8.38 it is the longer version, between two shorter versions so that people who want a slightly longer wheelbase on a similar size board can have that one, as they go longer / shorter / longer / shorter as they go from smaller width to wider.

A number of other brands also use that same board shape, even if their other shapes are maybe more uniform though.

The examples of this that I have skated include DLX - Antihero, Real, Krooked, There, and others like Baker, Deathwish, Birdhouse, DGK, Element, just for starters.


Then there are other brands that I know have different or shorter options in the 8.38 or 8.375 widths, some 14.38 wb including Passport, Magenta, Frog, and Generator boards.

Some even down to 14.25 such as April, Primitive, newer Element, DSM wood and more.


Then there are the DLX Tru Fit or AH Short boards in the same width, with 14" wb or so, as well as a number of other brands out there I can't think of right this minute that I have seen with other wheelbases, eg Palace 8.38 with a crazy long 14.8 wb or something like that.


Did you have a particular wheelbase you would prefer?

the stock size from bbs blanks i believe 14.38 on a 8.38 which makes sense as the boards seems to scale up width with wheel base (someone who is taller generally has a bigger foot and needs a bigger board but this is not always the case hence why different boards are made) so 8" will typically be 14" wb for that reason and 9" would be 15" wb as "stock" settings it seems.

PS Stix offers a size at 14.25" i quite like that

I’ve been really enjoying the 8.28 or 8.25s with 14.12wb but an 8.38 width would be nice. It seems to me most brands are around the 14.38 or 14.5 wb and also overall length being a bit long. I like under 32 if possible.

14.25 would be fine too

I forgot HLC wood - all their boards are a standard 14.2 wb regardless of width, so you could check some of those out - refer to the Woodshop thread, or if you are in USA, even check Skate Warehouse as they currently use HLC for their shop boards.

It's a bit of a mind boggler, yet simple.

Step off your toe rail, but so that it happens in the direction of your movement rather than as an actual lateral step to the side, if you catch my drift. Start "cabbing" your board just before, so the step-off happens when the board is already at a 90-ish degree angle. You of course need to do a bit of scoop-ish/shove motion with your back foot to iniatiate the spin for the biggie. Your feet are doing a kind of a cross-step in the process, but the crossing is just ever so slight.

Then it's just a question of jumping back on the board with your step-off foot. It's easier (and more stylish imo) if you step back on at 270 degrees and pivot the rest. That said, your rear foot (the one that does the scoop, not the one you use for the step-off) of course needs to land on the tail for the pivot.

Sounds complicated, but isn't. It'll click once you try it a few times. Rule of thumb: the board never goes "behind" you. You need to step off and spin the board so that it spins in front of you when looking at your direction of movement. This is key.

I used to be able to do them in '89-90, no cap. Yes, I'm old. Haven't tried one since, really. Need to get back on them, thanks for the reminder.

Not really a gear question, but didn’t want to make a new post in the Useless thread - anyone ever rubbrick (or something comparable) rough ground at a spot? Seems like it would work, but maybe just be wildly labor intensive?

Angle grinder would work. Make sure you get the higher quality batteries though.
Aside from that - yeah it would work. I’ve rubbricked brick walls for wallrides and I’ve used angle grinders on rough ground. Both work but you could also bondo the ground if that seems easier. Or do both.

If you're mostly going to use a diamond blade then you are pretty safe, you can stop them with a wet finger tip and not get cut.

you'll want to wear a dust mask, it takes a year or so for your body to remove silica from your lungs.

It's a rotational tool so you might want some vibration protection, but that's more for daily use. Big gloves is a bad idea the tool can grab the glove and wrangle your hand. Tight gloves with wrist straps

Also, it being a rotational tool you can direct the debris/spray away from you, this is easier to see when you are dealing with sparks. So always stay up wind from the spray, especially if you forget your dust mask

The diamond blade/cup that best mimics a rub-brick is usually more expensive then the grinder itself. The bigger the battery the better. It last longer and helps balance out the tool

Get Zen with it, meditate and become one with the tool and the curb you are working on

Better off with some cut resistant nitrile palm type gloves. So you can actually hold onto the grinder, big welding gloves aren’t the best for that. Safety glasses that actually fit your face so debris can’t get up behind them.

Once you’ve used one enough they’re pretty safe, just respect the tool.

Yeah, second the ear plugs, or some sort of ear protection.  That and glasses, but that is about all I use with my grinder, but I don't use it on concrete much at all - more so wheels, trucks and reshaping decks, usually with a fan blowing across it to get rid of the dust.

Got used to not wearing gloves which makes it easier to hold it too, but if there were ever any issues, I have those rubber over material type of gloves I use for a lot of other things, which I think could be the best for additional protection.

My Dad did stone work for years, which meant that I was often doing stone work at least part time and I spent a lot of time using an angle grinder. The only thing I can add is that cheap blades/cups are almost always garbage. I forget where we used to order ours from but they were expensive and great. The few times I had to buy them at the local lumber yard I was disappointed. A cheapo might be fine for the occasional curb but if you're going to spend any real time using it, spend the extra money.

  Yeah, those gloves should be fine. You just don't want anything bulky or loose.

In the "Good Problems to Have" world, I've got both a Krooked Zip Zogger and an Antihero Beach Bum and I'm thinking I really don't need two chode boards so I've decided to keep one and thought it'd be fun to ask Slap which one to keep. I had both set up but pulled the trucks off the zogger for another set up. They're both similar and I've mostly used them as little cruisers/curb boards.




(The top view is deceiving since the zogger is on the ground making it look shorter, they're basically identical in length)

Krooked Zip Zogger - 10.75" x 30" x 14.25"wb
Antihero Beach Bum - 9.55" x 30.4" x 14.2"wb

What does everyone think? If you had to keep one, which would YOU keep?
