Will leaving your board in the car during the summer damage it? We recently had a heatwave and it feels like everything is softer/soggier. Bushings/wheels/deck all feel softer, not sure if it's in my head?

I think so. Wood doing stuff in heat that people smarter than me can speak to. Everyone’s living situation is different but I bring my board in after every sesh in the summer months

Hmm maybe I should consider doing it for winter too but rain exposure and all..

For those who have a lot of shoes, do you skate multiple pairs at a time or have one dedicated pair?

Variety is the spice of life. Some cheap deals got me about 6 pairs of numeric. Mainly 440s but also 1010 and now some 480s. All good for different reasons  but they seem to help my feet having change ups. Due for a big cull soon  as I've worn most of them out.
They laughed when I told my friends that I was going to be a comedian.....well they are not laughing now!

That depends!  I've rotated  between skating one, maybe two pairs at a time only and chilling in the others (to break them in) as my every day pairs and skating 3-4 pairs at once breaking them all in evenly.

For similar shoes (all cupsoles by certain brand or Vans vulcs) I can pick between whatever I'm feeling that day with my fit/set-up.

Lately, I've been skating mostly one until it's about done and breaking in my next pair casually before I toss the super worn in pair

Yeah I’d avoid that whenever possible. Heat warps decks. Bushings getting softer is real, at least in the short term. Heat does wheels no good either. And cars can get up to 120° or more in the summer.

…but we’ve all gone straight to an after work sesh. Trunk is better than back seat. Take an old board, maybe?

Yes, heat and direct light cause issues with skateboards.

Putting skateboards and or decks in a board box will help a whole lot - a bit of insulation as well as keeping them out of view.  I had said to someone, even just wrapping it in a blanket or something like that, as he kept having issues with his boards warping and delaminating - surprisingly it worked well enough.

Ideally if the car is out in the full sun all day every day, best to keep anything out of view and nicely covered, or where possible put it in the back with something over or around it.

Gone since 1988.  I talk too much about skateboards.  Sorry.

I was hoping for you all to tell me I was crazy. Seems some warping has occurred, but its not a new setup so no harm no foul. Will definitely be paying more mind to this in the future.

i looked at my board and it looked warped from a certain perspective. whne i stand on it though its completely fine. i am skating at 100% with this board so i thought to myself - do i care? i can't actually tell when standing on it either, i cant tell when i am on the nose or tail because its twin (not that i usually can anyway....) i cant tell by the trucks either even though they are old - i tried to skate them both ways even on the last non-twin setup.

i dont think you really need a specific nose thats at a different steepness to the tail. i think that just creates OCD... i dont think i will ever go back to "directional" popsicles. you get so much more life out of all your gear skating both kicks. i dont think the performance optimization is worth it anyway - i get it there is a small one, but tons of pros skate twins...there are benefits of skating twins too.

Generally I'll have two main pairs to skate, usually fairly different models for different tricks or spots (half cabs and onestars, currently). But there's usually a few options if the go-tos aren't hitting or don't match my clothes or something.

But i have trouble skating shoes to actual death, so they get rotated out way before its necessary. Kinda fun to find a pair with another 30% life in em, and the only reason they were cast aside is cause the laces ripped or something.
Wow sorry, didn't realise I was dealing with a sick cunt here

I used to do that when I was skating 3-4 times a week and I would never have to deal with the new shoe + new deck dilemma. Now I'm skating less and the soles are almost gone but I'm reluctant to give them up because of how broken in they are. Using the next pair as chillers only helps break them in 30% of the way, the rest of it is all time on the board.

I gotta skate one pair to the ground before I swap to a new one. It's like with any other gear. I can't really handle switching back and forth between sessions. Messes up my skating. The new shoe break-in time is part of the process and I'm used to it.

yeah i am the same with a board. i try to just use the same setup until there is some need to switch.

i have had to jump between shoes and setups lately, and its been annoying, but it wasnt that bad actually. it helps when it is all stuff you have kinda broken in too.

what is the worst gear you ever had?

-Status Blank for like $30 - broke off a flat land heel varial, day or two old
-Green Shop Wheels for $20 - flat spotted them doing 1 powerslide on a hill in japan
-any bearings worse than reds
-tensor trucks - didnt turn at all

does anyone else remember in the late 90s there was a lot of grip tapes you could get with naked girls on them? ultimate edgelord setup with a hookups deck

Wow... that was in fact the name of the brand. That sounds so familiar too. I definitely did not understand what that meant at the time as a child.

I managed to find an image of a box online from a 2011 blog with the dog on top and everything.

Disagree on the Status decks, we used to be able to get them for $30 (in 2002 money) which was a steal for us in Asia. Not sure which woodshop Syndrome Distribution was using but they were really steep and stiff.

Silver Trucks with the bits that screwed into the axles, lost all 4 of them within a few weeks.

I have way too many shoes in general, but especially skate shoes. I used to be only one shoe until it's toast, but then got into the 3-4 shoes in rotation especially if I am skating 3+ times a week.

Now after years of on and off injuries/time away from skating I realized I had a pile of 7+ skated shoes stacking up on top of the regular amount of kicks laying around and it was getting too much for me.

So this year Im trying to commit to skating one shoe at a time so I get the full life out of em instead of skating once or twice and then throwing another shoe in the rotation and adding to the backstock. Finally almost done skating a 3 year old pair of 1010s and next will be finishing off a old pair of blazers before I break in my 933s that I have been patiently waiting to skate in!

I’m driving to the beach next week for family vacation. I’ll be hitting a park or two and I will probably do a little exploring at night. Should I bring my current semi new setup or throw together something out of old parts? Tempted to throw some 54mm cruiser wheels in my bag for the rough stuff.

@Mbrimson88 not to beat a dead horse, but do you or anyone have photos of the shaftnut on slappy trucks?
[close]

I don't have any of those trucks myself, but I looked them up and here are some images that hopefully show enough of it - maybe a slightly more recessed top compared to the other trucks, but just click on them for the full size:

* Adding this too, which may or may not be a good read:

https://www.slappytrucks.com/blogs/news/the-daily-grind-korea-review-slappy-trucks-st1-hollow-inverted

I’ll try to upload a pic later maybe move this to the slappy thread for the future but I think last I checked(I have a set)

The shaft nut is like half way in not like the Indy’s or Krux and who ever else does it where the shaft runs through the whole baseplate

It was kinda odd cause I was perplexed too when I got them and checked if it had a shaft nut so the baseplate doesn’t stretch and get kingpin wobble like my old Krux downlows

And yeah it was weird where the shaft doesn’t run all the way through, it starts from the nut goes half way and I guess cause the ultra low kingpins are usually on forged plates maybe it’s less likely to stretch and wobble

Does anyone remember an old Girl series of boards that were different ties? The tie was portrait across the whole board. Nothing amazing art wise, but I was stoked to get a Girl board after seeing Yeah Right for the first time.

I’ve checked art of skateboarding and the crail archives, can’t find anything. They came out around Yeah Right, maybe a year or two later. I had the Rickk and my friend had the Carroll.

They mustn’t have been great because they never redid them or were bothered to upload them anywhere.
Globes Opinion made me depressed for years.

The best angle I could try to capture what I was mentioning about it only being halfway

And the more i inspected it I don’t even think there’s a shaft

Might just be a slightly longer than average nut

And these are the forged plates

I've been skating and pretty much only wearing SB dunks since 2021 or something, I tried to skate in some I path reed lows this morning and hated life.
Anyone got advice for changing shoes after that long of a run? Like honestly it was worse that trying new trucks or a different size deck. Everything felt so wrong and shitty.

Edit: a) I've been wearing the Ipaths as chillers for ages
         b) I'm old as fuck, like in my old man curb era
         c) I know it's probably all in my head but fuck.

I try not to skate the same way in *new/different* shoe models  after long stints on X and/or Y models because like you, it bums me out. Things don't work like they're supposed to.

What I do is keep it simple: shuvs & cruising with simple Ollie's & basic transition riding. Just to see if I'm meshing with the new silhouette before trying to do everything like usual

I fine the 480s and Manteca’s to be better than dunk alternatives. Especially if you need more cushion, long run I think those shoes skate better, but initially I think the dunk starts off better. Break in time and what not.

Ipath has weird sizing in my experience and they’re always updating & changing their materials depending on which drop you happen to get. I have a narrower foot so I had to size down .5 and they still felt a little too roomy to skate in, but as chillers they’re fine.

For a non-board breaker that only replaces boards when they razor or sog ~6-8 weeks, how much longer can I expect a flight deck to last?

I break boards all the time

Flight decks last until they're razor tailed or I chip the shit out of them

I've never broken one

In case I really need a board they're still in the garage and I can epoxy the chips and re-grip if I need too

If you don't really break boards and they can last 8 weeks, i don't really see why it would be worth it to spend the extra money for one

In my opinion the only reason to get one is if you break boards a lot

They're good though, they feel fine and keep their pop

Of course I'd rather skate a BBS

I usually retire a flight deck after a month, skating 3 or 4 days a week.

I would do the same with a BBS but often I snap them well before that

Is there a formula of how wider trucks give you wheel bite faster and do wider trucks turn more or less for the same angle of the board?

Wider trucks usually mean wider deck and the "lever" is longer, so yes, in that sense they wheelbite easier at least

I got CM001's as chillers but no way I'll skate in the after yesterday lol.
