Are the China Deluxe boards made with water based glue or epoxy resin?

I knew there was no physical reason boards couldnt be made in China the same way they were made in mexico. THese definitely seem like North American wood to me and not China wood. so if the proces was really dialed down ,in theory, good boards can be made anywhere. I think we re starting to see a lot more competition for BBS now - these are old boards even from 2021 and probably when BBS was over capacity with orders.

At this point "Made in China" is more a psychological statement. Remember "Made in Germany" was once designed as a warning, before it became a trademark ... Now think other high quality products like the iAnythings, that are manufactured in China. There might be various geopolitical, social, environmental ... reasons to despise China (and a flood of really cheap fast fashion etc), but the manufacturing alone can be top-notch "if necessary".

Right now i have a "DSM Premium Woodshop made in china" deck on my knees. DSM was set up by Mr Mullen himself once and works with imported canadian wood. Guess at a certain level its more about personal preferences (shapes, pop, concave ...) than product quality itself.

j....soy.....

loosely keeping tabs on this thread, my understanding was single press and resin, they are a tiny bit thicker too.  As @Woodshop mentioned they feel a bit different as well.  As far as I know, I haven't heard many complaints about the quality.

I prolly already mentioned, but I was listening to a podcast recently with a shop owner and they mentioned labour costs tripled out of BBS recently, so maybe we'll be seeing more of these...

Man, those boards could be pretty damn good.

But I do hope the people making my boards make a decent living be that in Mexico or China.

Tum Yeto just got a huge delivery of BBS decks. They usually use PS Stix, right?

Again, I will ask, has anyone else heard the rumor that PS Stix is closing?

They’ve used BBS in the past randomly but not sure how big those orders were. May have been more of a pandemic scramble thing back then. Who knows, now?

I’m sure the more knowledgeable wood shop heads will chime in.

They have “ let go” of a lot of the workers. A local company here couldn’t get PS to return his calls regarding an order. I know the Prof has really scaled back production. Industry is in really bad shape right now.

Edit- not a very definite answer but I’ve heard the rumors too.. He’s either really cut back or maybe thinking retirement?

Yes, as said, China made boards are resin / epoxy and super stiff for the life of the board.  When compared to BBS water based glues that for some people go soggy way more quickly, or at the very least flex a lot more than the epoxy made boards, I would say there are pros and cons to both, but it is just down to what people prefer.

Some people have described the DSM boards like this, which would also apply to the DLX China made boards, in that they are stiff from day one and stay stiff until they break, whenever that may be.

A couple of DLX China made boards I have had have definitely held up and even with the drive over them to mellow them out a bit, they are still as stiff as ever, even though they are a little more mellow now than when I first got them.  One had already been skated a whole month by someone else when it came back to me, so it stayed crispy for that person the whole time, so yes they hold up well.

Any board with enough force will break, so like Santa Cruz / Creature / DSM or other China made epoxy / resin constructions, the DLX China boards hold up really well in that regard.

As to other things, what people in China get paid is probably something that never gets mentioned, but I know the US dollar has been dropping when compared to other currencies such as Mexico (peso) so BBS boards and everything else moved to production in Mexico is now costing a lot more than it did a while back.  People have said that woodshops look after their workers, so I take that on board, but I also don't know the half of it with a lot of it, but generally China seemingly has no restrictions on anything like that, so it is work, work, work, die.

Someone else could probably fill me in on it so I don't put my foot in it again though.  Just repeating what I hear, not everything come to that, but the things I look up and try to find out some more info about which could then seem to be fairly reliable info.

I have been wrong in the past though.

Anyone else find BBS quality has gone down?

I'm skating a lot less and a lot less rough. Yet I just chipped yet another BBS board that's less than a week old. It's frustrating to the point where I'm going to get a NHS deck next time I buy a new deck.

BBS premium is better. They have a couple tiers of quality.

I only see the pp (price point) and the main quality.
Now with the recent china production, we have to see what's up.

I have never had a PS board I didn't regret. I had to swear off quasi (I know they do some bbs too) because of their PS boards. They all got so soggy after 2 sessions I couldn't believe people actually swore by them. I've had people lighter than me in weight say the same thing so it cant be just my size.

I kinda love the way a board feels when it sogs out a bit. Maybe that’s why I like PS. I assume I’m in the minority, though.

I’m the same way. I prefer ps stix. I know what you mean by sogged out and I like that too. A few different brands make a similar boxy 8.5 with 14.25 wheelbase and that’s my ideal shape and pretty much all I buy. Like the quasi proto is the perfect board. I don’t know if this makes any sense but if I’m skating a lot it feels good if my feet can push a little into my board.

Exactly. If a board is too crispy, I feel like I have less control over it.

A shop that used PS for their shop decks ran out of stock and ordered more but never received the order and can't get anyone on the phone over there so that's not looking great.

I meant to reply to this the other day but ran out of time and forgot.

Generally I think boards chipping or chunking out is more environmental and chance, than quality of the product, but in saying that, there definitely have been some instances of boards that are too dry seeming to just flake and come apart a lot more quickly than some other boards that are way more strong and stiff in construction.

Not at all saying there are not funny things going on with any woodshops, cause people here and there have made comments to the effect for BBS, PS Stix and other woodshops of late too.

By all means, see if NHS wood holds up better.  Skating and wearing these DLX China epoxy boards, some seem to hold up really well, but one I skated at an old park recently ended up having so many chunks out from just a short session, it makes me think I don't want to go back and skate there on any board, but that is just me and I do get almost too used to having nice smooth parks, minimal chunks on boards and skate the better places, rather than the rough spots that eat boards and wheels all day every day.

PS Stix has been posting a lot on social media, so someone is still doing something there, even if there might not be anyone in the office to answer calls.

Who knows though - cutbacks on staff or even closing the office while the manufacturing goes on, or maybe even just posting on social media to keep up appearances, but who knows really.

Didn't want to necro bump from 2019: https://www.slapmagazine.com/index.php?topic=103057.msg3183601#msg3183601

I've two of the NHS Cold/Single Pressed 'wide tip' decks in rotation; an 8.375x32.15x14.44WB with ACEs and SPFs for transition and an 8.25"x32"x14.44" for street/park.

There is a different feel to them...they feel less modern in away, a bit more solid with sort of an 80s feel to them; hard to explain...not at thin feeling as an R7, of which I'm also a fan, and certainly crispier feeling than a DLX board.

Running them through for a heat transfer seems sort against the point of a cold press tho.

Apparently some of the new deathwish boards are 'cold pressed' (last two drops it seems); randomly noticed while perusing for Foy Twins...

https://www.deathwishskateboards.com/collections/all-boards

Anyone skate a DW board recenlty and notice a difference? (FWIW nothing else under BBDistro seems to be labeled that way).

Interesting to see if it is just adding more info to the listings, as they have dimensions, wb and kick length on most of those too, which I hadn't seen in the past.

Gang Logo University Deck 8.25
Team Model
8.25” x 31.5"
14.25" Wheelbase
6.72” Nose
6.4" Tail
Deathwish deck made with 100% Cold Pressed Canadian Maple.
Deck includes 1 sheet of black grip

* I think all BBS boards are cold pressed anyway, as warm pressed is more often epoxy / resin and a China woodshop marketing thing, but I could be wrong.

If anyone cares:

“Sorry for the late reply!

The SK8MAFIA decks sold in the US shops are all made at the HLC factory in Texas. Sames for Roger, Plan B, Flip Skateboards...

Some shops might still have old stock from last year, which is made in Europe

Best regards,

HLC Distribution“

I asked because I’ve been happy with the HLC decks I’ve had lately. Roger is a fun one.
Also, with all the concerns about potential tariffs on skate gear post inauguration.
