Set up an Opera Pop Slick and had first session on it today.

First time skating an R7 board since 2020.

Very hyped on it so far. Board feels really good and the slick aspect is SO goddamn fun! I haven't wanted to setup board rails yet, but I skate a double sider curb often.

Slides so good. My first time on a slick ever.

Have been skating a PS Stix board that has super thick paint. White base layer, blue, then sparkly clear coat, then graphic pressed over all that. Makes slides feel soft and if you are a bit toeside on forward slides, or heelside on backwards slides, you'll stick.

The slick is so hard in comparison, and helps you correct weight before sticking. Only complaint is it has a minimal graphic that is textured over top of/a part of the slick and those sections don't slide as well.
[close]

Does the slick feel heavier than a normal board with the same dimensions?

Really like Operas board dimensions, graphics and the resin 7 dsm wood is awesome and feels crispy like a new board for a long time.

I haven't seen every variation of slick on the market, but generally the layer over the rest of the seven ply can add a little weight.

Some people notice it more than others though, depending on your type of setup I guess, eg some people will always go for the lightest options in truck, wheel, etc so they might find it is a weight burden, while others that are not so tuned in to weight, or actually like the heft of a board might be fine with it.

The thin white layer, plastic or whatever it is, with the graphic set into it, seems to still be the most common slick type, similar to what we had back in the day - 90s Everslick technology, but there are others, eg DLX with their clear layer over the top of the board graphic.

The two or three slicks I have around the place are ever so slightly heavier when compared to their same shape and size from the same woodshop, some from BBS, some NHS (Creature slick) and others.

* What material does it look like on your slick?  Or take a pic?  Thanks.

No. The way this board is constructed is different than other slicks.

It doesn't have a plastic layer over top of a normal veneer. The slick is the entire bottom veneer except for like 15% on the tips of the nose and tail, which are wood.

I have no idea how they are producing these at scale. It seems really intricate and hard to align but it's perfect.

The weight wasn't noticeable to me at all when I rode this one - https://operaskateboards.com/products/twins-ex7-pop-slick-deck.

I thought I'd really like the short wheelbase but I really struggled, the last 14" wheelbase I rode was on an 8.0 with Venture 5.2 V-Hollow Lows and it was my Goldilocks setup, but couldn't' get that same loving feeling again with the 8.5.

Never seen any of those boards out there, but the pics and line up with that technology sure is a curious one and I am interested to see how they are put together.

It is often more interesting to me when they are almost dead / destroyed or in pieces cause then I can see the different layers or how they were constructed, compared to when they are brand new and you can't really tell what is going on until you start to skate it.

I know I hoard things, but the different constructions are very interesting to me, so I have kept a lot of broken boards with many of those carbon layers, in between layer options and all the like.  Maybe over a dozen of the DSM boards alone, because they have really done a huge number of different constructions over the years.

All are in pieces though, so at the end of the day, skateboards still will not hold up to some things.

Thanks for posting that link - very interesting.

Gone since 1988.  I talk too much about skateboards.  Sorry.

This is black diamond pearl drum wrap, like without a doubt that is what the slick material is.  So its a celluloid material.
Its pretty thin, I think .5mm.  Is it really inlayed and not glued on there?

Well guys, I am an idiot.

Turns out the slick is actually a plastic veneer inset over a wood veneer.

In my defense, I had only looked at my board in low light and the wood is the same color as the slick insert. I have wheelbit thru the slick layer on one corner as well.

I will take some pictures soon if anyone is interested.

I’m interested. I really planning on my next deck being an opera. Just never had a slick before but you’re tempting me. Especially cause I chip the side of my nose a lot and it looks that slick is where I chip so I’m hoping it’s helps that

Would love to see pics, even if it's another layer it would be way thinner than the old style slicks.  Plus it's a novel use of a very old material.

Slicks have always been plastic, and DSM mastered the inlay stuff years ago to make it cost-effective. Madness and now opera take fool advantage of it. but over a decade ago Almost had the No Smear logo graphic in their catalog. It was just a different color veneer inlay. It was a pretty sick idea, and I would still buy a deck like that if another brand did it.

Merch is merch, so it’s not that surprising. I am hella curious about the crossover of kids that are serious mr beast fans who wanna skate.

Maybe they’ll just become wall art

Is there anyway of figuring out a specific BBS shape? The April 8.125 X 14.00 is the perfect shape for me, it's getting harder to find and I've had to order the last couple from far flung places(some got lost in transit too). Just wondering if there's other brands using the same shape that might be easier to get.

I'd be interested in giving it a whirl, same dims that I ride. Wouldn't mind seeing in person first though, got caught out with a Polar board with the same dims but had steep pointy kicks.

i'm not sure about this one since it's labeled as "new shape" but that baker og with the mellow concave was also pointy in the kicks, but definitely not steep.

Not really, some brands use unique shapes outside the usual shape catalog (https://skatesamples.com/products/5-pack-blank-decks-premium-2-dye), in this case you're probably stuck ordering from that same brand on repeat.

Anyone know if more recent 303 boards are still BBS? With the 33% off sale on some of the already on sale decks, they're cheap and there's a few not terrible graphics.

It would be good to update the list if there was any more info, as this was from a couple of years ago now.

Yeah, I was wondering if there was any more current info. Of course I wouldn't doubt that some of the sale decks have been sitting around for a while so I think there's a good chance they would be BBS.

I think Primitive also had a shorter wb on regular length deck, but I don't usually see too many of those.  Might be worth checking though, from some of the shop sites that do have all the info.

Also from just checking 14.0 wb options a few other board brands do come up, including Girl / Chocolate, DGK, Quasi, a few of the DLX (AH, Real, Krooked) boards like specific Full SE, Tru Fit or the Short versions, so depending on where you are, there could be a few other options there too.

Note, there might also be some of that might be 14.1 which should also work well enough too.

WKND makes some 14” WB options as well. 8.25 and I believe 8.5 as well.

Anti Hero too. Kanfoush has an 8.25 with that WB. It’s produced semi-regularly. I wanna say they make an 8.5 and 8.75 sometimes, too

My friend was saying to me that he got a Hardbody board and it felt sick as fuck, meanwhile he got a Sci Fi board and it felt like a Walmart board. Both apparently BBS Sticker. He is saying he thinks that some brands are getting better wood / different process at BBS. I was saying this must add quite a bit of cost if this is true. Thoughts? He sets up a new board pretty much every 3-4 weeks, he is fairly knowledgeable about woodshops etc. not just some rando
