Set up an Opera Pop Slick and had first session on it today.
First time skating an R7 board since 2020.
Very hyped on it so far. Board feels really good and the slick aspect is SO goddamn fun! I haven't wanted to setup board rails yet, but I skate a double sider curb often.
Slides so good. My first time on a slick ever.
Have been skating a PS Stix board that has super thick paint. White base layer, blue, then sparkly clear coat, then graphic pressed over all that. Makes slides feel soft and if you are a bit toeside on forward slides, or heelside on backwards slides, you'll stick.
The slick is so hard in comparison, and helps you correct weight before sticking. Only complaint is it has a minimal graphic that is textured over top of/a part of the slick and those sections don't slide as well.
Does the slick feel heavier than a normal board with the same dimensions?
Really like Operas board dimensions, graphics and the resin 7 dsm wood is awesome and feels crispy like a new board for a long time.
I haven't seen every variation of slick on the market, but generally the layer over the rest of the seven ply can add a little weight.
Some people notice it more than others though, depending on your type of setup I guess, eg some people will always go for the lightest options in truck, wheel, etc so they might find it is a weight burden, while others that are not so tuned in to weight, or actually like the heft of a board might be fine with it.
The thin white layer, plastic or whatever it is, with the graphic set into it, seems to still be the most common slick type, similar to what we had back in the day - 90s Everslick technology, but there are others, eg DLX with their clear layer over the top of the board graphic.
The two or three slicks I have around the place are ever so slightly heavier when compared to their same shape and size from the same woodshop, some from BBS, some NHS (Creature slick) and others.
* What material does it look like on your slick? Or take a pic? Thanks.
