Just got my Hockey Kevin Rodrigues Keep Sake deck and it says “Made in China” instead of Mexico/BBS. A bunch of shops here in Australia just got their Hockey drops so maybe they have switched production for Export boards to China??

I have a Hockey Belzinz deck also and it’s a BBS board, the dip and graphic quality is identical. Curious

[close]

Interesting and first I have heard or seen, but not surprised.

If you stand on it or check the concave and kicks, are they BBS like in spoon kicks, or more generic flat faces as per many other China made boards?

If you are not sure, even just a more basic question - does it feel like the usual Hockey board concave or not?

Thanks for posting too!
[close]

No worries! I was really surprised. Compared to my other Mexican made Hockey boards, the kicks aren’t as blunt/squared, the concave is similar, the finish and thickness are the same also. I’d say it’s slightly heavier though, but only by a little bit. I’ll post some comparison shots soon

Thanks for sharing. If they changed woodshops it must have been pretty recent cus I copped a FA Gonz guest board less than 2 months ago and it says made in Mexico. I’ve been skating their 8” decks almost exclusively.. bummed to hear that the shape changed

Keep in mind, a lot of brands get export boards made in China, so Hockey/FA may still be using BBS for USA boards but here in Australia they are appear to now be sending China made boards, which in a way is a shame because I really like BBS boards and the price didn't change either.

I think I heard that FA/Hockey had relocated part of their production. And that distributors are decision-makers on the choice of workshop. BBS being more expensive of course.

So here is the 2025 Hockey Keep Sake Deck (China) compared to my Hockey Nerves Deck (Mexico/BBS)

The shape is the same, I thought at first it wasn’t but comparing them directly the shape is definitely pretty much spot on.  The concave or kicks are different as you can see on the second photo.

The Keep Sake deck seems to be a little bit thinner as well.

I'm kinda willing to bet you'll like the China one. I've been on about this in other threads too, but these days I actually prefer China-made DLX decks over BBS ones. My current deck is surgical-level razor-tailed and almost skated to death, but still retains good snappiness. Homie of mine was stoked on it today at the local, he said it felt newer than it looked, thought it would feel soggy and shitty but no.

There could of course be a difference with regards to where the Hockey China decks are made over the DLX China ones, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were really similar.

Hey if it didn’t say made in China on it, I honestly wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between the boards just from my initial impression, it certainly doesn’t feel of any lesser quality. I’m very curious which factory they are using but I would assume DLX also. If I emailed FA about it do you think they would tell me ;D

I can’t skate it however until my Nerves deck is dead, which won’t be for a while, but I’m sure it will skate as well if not better like you say.

No word from FA yet but I went to my Local today and had a chat with the owner (who also just got a Hockey shipment) and we checked the new boards, all Chinese as well. He has a theory that they might have come from the Dwindle Factory “Chop Chop” woodshop, because apparently Baker are changing some of their logo boards to this factory also. Interesting!

Thanks for posting all this info and the pics too.

I think increasingly BBS is going to be almost too expensive for some brands to want to still make their $$$ but not be priced out of the market, when they ask too much, so going to a cheaper production might be the only way they are able to make things viable now.

Just looking at the boards, especially the light reflecting off, there is no spoon concave in the kicks on the new China board, or at least doesn't seem like it, but I know pics aren't everything.  Some boards out of China are great, but some are more just another skateboard deck, nothing special, etc.

Would be good to see some in person, but I will wait until I am somewhere that might have a good range of everything.

For what it’s worth, DSM boards I’ve skated were all good quality. The flatter concave and deck stiffness took a little time to get used to, but otherwise the decks were consistent, pop was crispy, and they lasted longer from my experience. Sucks the price didn’t go down, but there are worse woodshops out there imo

DSM has long made the longest lasting standard construction decks IMO. Crail is a close second. Neither woodshop has as popular of brands (I know Crail isn't their own shop), but I almost always recommend them over PS and some BBS to kids who want longer lasting. They definitely seem to chip less as well. Unfortunately DSM doesn't make that many shorter wheelbase boards even in small sizes, but Crail definitely does. A DSM True Fit series would be the best middle school setup.

Palace and Opera are pretty relevant companies on DSM wood. Great lasting boards yeah.

We don't carry Palace, but we do carry Opera and it does not sell well. We did not carry Almost, but that brand fizzled for different reasons. Jacuzzi sells decently well actually, but again not many truly shorter options. DSM boards always feel longer than advertised.

Oh yeah Jacuzzi Unlimited is another one, forgot about them.

Sad to hear Opera doesn't sell. Newer brand maybe people haven't caught on yet.

Well! We have official confirmation from FA/Hockey much to my surprise. Credit to them for being so transparent about it, I fully expected no response or very few details. Here’s a screen shot of their email back to me confirming some international decks can be purchased from Chop Chop Woodshop instead of BBS.

Might be time to update the directory!

I had the embossed pod logo deck a few years ago and it was like that. I got it because suciu was riding it a the graphic a lot. I imagine he’s still on the same shape.

What I did just notice then was there are different lengths now.

The regular AWS and Habitat boards were pretty much X.XX width with 32.25 length and 14.25 wb, fairly long squared off kicks, at least on the boards I saw.

Those newer ones are shorter length and wheelbase, with what could be a more round and less square looking kick type shape, but as I haven't seen any in person, I don't know.

I guess they have had feedback that some people want something more normal, maybe not long and square, so with that, the introduction of shape names to make it easier for people to identify the different boards, but I will have to check a little more on both sites and see.

Gone since 1988.  I talk too much about skateboards.  Sorry.

Nice work!!!

So yeah, FA and Hockey have gone with DSM for their boards now for some places / countries.  Most likely AU, EU, Asia, etc given how much less it might cost the distributors, but they can still ask whatever they want.

Updated the front page listings for those two.

Habitat / AWS use BBS and China woodshops, slightly steeper concave and stiffness of the latter, but still nearly imperceptible. My last order with them was a year ago so I couldn't tell you with certainty on woodshops, they're under Mother Distribution and Metal is no longer under the Sect. Shape wide full and round, not boxy like a FA.

https://habitatskateboards.com/pages/sect-shapes

The 8.75 Raver looks interesting, nice to see twin egg shapes readily available.

https://habitatskateboards.com/products/suciu-twin-continental-8-375

They started listing which woodshops they're from (BBS / DSM) which is nice.

My DGK board from the sale bin feels like a Clutch board, steeper kicks, med concave, a bit heavy….
