Not sure this is the right thread, but here it goes: my son got a 7.75 Strangelove, it was so mellow in the concave and kicks, really flat. I liked it so much I got their 8, and both have the same length and 14" wb. I figured they would have the same shape, but this one is way steeper. I'm pretty bummed out, but I wanted to check, are these different molds, or is it pretty typical for BBS 7.75 decks to be way more mellow?
Yes definitely the right thread for anything deck related.
As to the specifics of BBS boards, or any woodshop that does not use single presses, there is always going to be a top of the press board that is steeper and a bottom of the press board that is more mellow, with two more in between to make up the usual four boards per press scenario.
Then you get into the different molds, so even the same boards from different molds can be very different, eg a smaller / shorter or steeper mold vs a bigger / longer or more mellow mold. Usually the bigger boards are pressed on the bigger / longer molds and the smaller boards pressed on the regular molds, given most wheelbases are around 14 to 14.5 give or take a bit, but even then some can be steeper in the side to side concave, or some way more mellow as well.
Now as to those specific boards, I can only assume that you have two boards from completely different molds there, maybe the mellow one from a more mellow mold and the steeper one from a more normal or regular mold. BBS in general are right down the middle for concave, but they also have presses with very mellow mold concaves (such as almost every Element board I have had) and some with very steep concaves, (thinking more along the lines of brands like FA / Hockey).
A number of DLX / Real decks have also been super mellow, compared to some others, even between two or more of the exact same size, shape, graphic, etc.
BBS made Element decks, even in 7.5 through 7.75 and 8.0 to 8.25 have all been very mellow with some 8.38 and 8.5 boards being a little steeper, but still more mellow than average, as have Primitive and some other brands I have seen.
Then BBS made boards for some other brands have been a "lucky dip" mix, some Baker, Deathwish, Birdhouse, Quasi, Black Label and I can't think how many others off the top of my head, where some were very mellow, some right on average and some almost too steep for me to ride.
Sorry for the super long reply, but yes it might be common, or it might not, so maybe if you can't see the boards in person, maybe contact the shop and ask if they can check the boards before buying.
Also maybe even check with Strangelove as well, as someone there might be able to give you a good answer too.
