My friend told me to come pick this up, any Recs? Gonna put the biggest tires it’ll fit, gonna get rid of the pedals, and new saddle, but I’ve never had drop bars in my life, is this thing able to ride with uprights? I’m not sure of the components either I’ve heard KHS kinda skimps, so if y’all got any advice for this build lemme hear them

[close]

Seconding that you clean it up and ride it as is. Drops can be nice. Switching out the bars to be more upright means new brakes and shifters.

For sure, I’ve never had road bike before so it’s a little daunting, gonna definitely need a overhaul with the shifters and brakes everything is loose as shit, is there a secret to getting bar tape off?? The hoods for the shifters are donezo as well, hopefully getting new ones isn’t a problem,  plan on getting her degreased and cleaned up first, get all the components cleaned up and stuff, buy some tires for the rims and get her going at least somewhat so I can see what else needs to be replaced

bar tape off: use an x-acto knife to cut through the tape and it should unravel pretty easy. alternatively remove the bar plug at the end of the bars and if they wrapped them from the top of the bars down, then you should be able to remove the tape pretty easy. use acetone or mineral spirits with a cloth after removed if you want to remove all of the residue.

hoods: you can find pretty easy. sites like velo-orange have lots of parts for older bikes that work well (https://velo-orange.com/). amazon i'm sure has them too, as well does your local bike shop (LBS) but honestly most of the ones around me kinda suck so i do most of my part shopping online.

shifting / brakes: recommend taking the cables apart and seeing if they need lubricating. get a chain lube from an auto parts store or bike shop and try and get the cables moving within the housing. if they're seized up good then you'll need new cables. but i'm all for trying to save whatever you can before shelling out more $ and spending the time replacing the parts. there's tons of videos on YT on dialing in your brakes / shifting.

have fun!

I got something similar and took it to a repair shop to make it a single speed….served me well until I saved up for a gravel bike…got me out riding and building up strength…

just clocked up my 1000'th mile on the E cargo bike......had it for exactly 8 months, and its never been ridden more than 4 miles from my house, so thats a 1000 miles of local journeys........( apologies in advance for virtue signalling!) But I really should take it further afield.....maybe a camping trip or something.

Crazy how much cleaning/dry lubing my chain helped my ride. I thought i had a bottom bracket issue (crazy creaking sound when pedaling) and needed to get a full service at my local shop.

nope...chain was just dirty/dry
Quoting another poster without commenting anything yourself is the most annoying form of virtue signaling on the internet IMO. Just so lazy.

Took the rig to the local covered parking lot, still working on getting the road bike cleaned up, got the bars and components off and am gonna spray it with degreaser and work on getting the chain back on, there is a derailleur class at yellow bike that I signed up for so I’ll bring that in with me and see if I can tuned up the shifting and stuff myself

Good on ya for learning how to work on your own stuff. You didn't ask for it, but I found Sheldon Brown's pages helpful when I was learning to wrench at home. Actually, his one on derailleurs is really well done, IMO.

https://www.sheldonbrown.com/derailer-adjustment.html

Derailers look complicated, but they are actually very simple, brute-force devices.

That is especially true of friction derailleurs, but index shifting like what you have ain't exactly rocket science either.

Good luck with your work!

Not sure what's going on with that Dyno, but I do know the brakes don't work for shit.

That KHS has some potential.  Good luck with the project.

they're not cheap but i had been eyeing them for way too long and finally pulled the trigger on one, and i love it. great for a beer run to the distributor - also good for jamming random things like your phone or wallet into them.

First off I’m sorry it came to this, she’s getting fixed.
My mom bought me this with her first paycheck from her first big paying job, then I found out I like skateboarding better, it’s been garage kept, I pulled it out when she moved to her new place. Hopefully I can get it going again

I feel you.
It’s rad that you’ve still got it and if you need to source parts shot me a dm I can give you some links. I still have my Hutch Trick Star that I saved up $ for like 2/3 years to buy the frame and fork. Shop I got it from also sold decks and so that led to grabbing a Skull Skates Hosoi, after that the bike got left alone until winter and moving to California kinda killed the whole freestyle thing. No snow and other skaters.
Yours looks like later 80s? Iirc

Still has the bike shop sticker on the frame, sun and fun in bay city Texas, what’s crazy is I got it in like 92’ so it had been sitting in that shop for awhile before my mom went in there and scooped it for me, so it being a 89’ is pretty crazy I didn’t realize it was that old, yea I’m prolly gonna source some rims get all the brake lines fixed, new chain and grips and give it to my kid, just so he can be like I want a skateboard…..hopefully
