I believe they have 6 different colors slated of the xlt, I can see someone being nostalgic and buying 1 or 2 but having legs beyond that is a mystery.
Maybe they think it will be like the nu skool and reside in that puffy world, mainstream culture is weird. The things they glom onto aren’t based on nostalgia as much as it is a rapper or influencer wearing it.
I wasn’t an xlt fan then and the samples I saw looked legit and good. But it’s it gonna be as big as they hope. Make a few, don’t bank on them going big.

I'm going to buy at least 1 of every colorway, this was my favorite shoe growing up... that being said I agree I don't see them having legs beyond the nostalgia crowd.  Hopefully I'm wrong I'd love to see it stick around for a while.

not sure how to feel

Companies putting out shoes in the name of corpses always feels gross and disrespectful to me. Nothing is sacred under capitalism.

I know the deceased's estate is usually involved in these decisions, but like, would they really be putting out sneakers with their dead relative's name or face on them without a large financial incentive? I'm not shaming them for getting a bag, but just a critique of a system that encourages dismembering and decontextualizing great artist's work to put on some shitty sneakers. The fake timb skateshoes designed by white guys in california to sell to middle schoolers is just so on the nose.

I guess I'm not the only one who has had these thoughts. Pretty good piece about Basquiat's commodification. I think it largely applies to the ODB gear as well: https://jacobin.com/2022/05/jean-michel-basquiat-commodification-art-inequality-racism-branding

There's something about doing it with sneakers that feels extra gross. I guess cause they get all fucked up and dirty and touch the ground.

The guy in charge of DC's upcoming releases lives in my town. Had a talk with him at the shop talking about lynx OG's about a year ago and this got brought up. He was so stoked to be "bringing basquiats heritage to light through skate shoes" and I could not imagine anyone wanting to purchase these. I was right, they continued to sit on shelves at every shop that sells them. Shitty shoes, shitty "collaboration", shitty idea. Truly mind blowing that these got the green light, but I suppose money talks.

Half the reason I'm a faithful Vans customer is that I mostly buy same core models (Half-Cabs, Old Skools or Sk8-Highs) and they're generally consistent. Some variation of those shoes will always be around and I'll probably never struggle to find them if I need new shoes. I know how they'll skate and I know they'll work. The other models don't really interest me, and frankly I think it's weird that they're trying to cash in on techy 2000's nostalgia.

btw, popped on that DOA podcast while working and I'm enjoying it!

I mean ask a shop owner how many of the Zahba they've sold. I know for a fact that our local still has some of the Kader Sylla Era's left. Shoe came out in 2019 and Kader left Vans in 2020. I appreciate that you have something that works well for you but for myself I can't do it anymore. My knees and feet are too screwed up after wearing Vans.

[close]

Fair. The reason I brought that up is because I feel like a lot of Vans criticism comes from their one off decisions or outlier models. Which is fair but considering the brand as a whole I think there are a lot of people with the same buying philosophy as me, who will be wearing Old Skools and Half-Cabs many years from now.

that said I bought some Blazer Mids yesterday. Let's see how it goes.

I was the same until I found NB and some cups that work for me. We need to get you to try some 440s or something next!

"can I get some artsy converse, dad?"

"we got cons at home"

For real - stringing up any deceased artist like a puppet for monetary purposes is wack and tacky af. Feel the way about most posthumous albums, or these new AI "collabs" just because you weren't able to work with them while they were alive. Idk, kinda gross to make your own buck off someone else's legacy.
Wow sorry, didn't realise I was dealing with a sick cunt here

The thing about that Basquiat collab is that virtually every company under the sun seemed to be throwing out basquiat branded stuff. DC wasn't alone in that. There is often this weird push with consumer goods where suddenly overnight certain artists are everywhere. Same thing happened with Warhol and Haring, not to mention the tons of classical artists who's works are in the public domain. It's just trends, if you hate it then don't buy it.

Also, as much as guys tend to shit on Blondey and Thames, at least he did something a little different with his Francis Bacon collection and actually has a real personal connection to the artist. Thames is supposed to celebrate the history of London and Britain, and Bacon is probably the best London-based artist of the last 50 years.

I think Basquit, Warhol, Haring are all managed by the same Giant IP company. It's a revolving fuckin door once you notice it. it's Converse this season, next season is DC, then it's doc martins, and then, then reebok.. and so on and so forth.

I think the idea is to trick people into thinking it's limited or special or whatever, but how special is your Hello kitty lakai's if you can just get hello kitty adidas in 2 months? Hello Kitty vans next, year, and then lakai again in 3 years.

Remember when DC and Lakai were pushing purple/black shoes with some band at almost the same time? It's so gross, and these IP companies have these little brands gassed up thinking that if they hop into this "collab" ecosystem then their one of the big boys.

Yes, there was a time Supra was really cool, simple but sophisticated shoes, with a great team and a strong image.

This doesn't even looks the same brand...

I like the Servold in White. But probably not for skating for my fragile ankles. But they would be nice for a day at the beach. The white KSL is also sick. But the KSL won't be continued? And is there a way to purchase specific Etnies insoles? I would like to try all of them and see which one I like the most.
