For those who skate Aces on transition, do you use riser pads? They seem pretty low in stock form so I'm really curious. I'm used to Indy Standards though, so that could be what's tripping me out.

Ace with risers suit me just fine.

Occasionally with 54mm and under wheels  and 8.5 deck/ trucks, I can get away without risers. Otherwise I use them on most of my set ups.

I use 1/8” risers. I normally skate 58mm wheels and ride my trucks pretty loose (nut flush, no threads showing). I rarely get wheelbite

Aces are great with 1/8 risers. But I always ride 56mm+ wheels.

Should I replace the Top(91a) or Bottom(86a) stock bushing with a hard bushing(94a) if I want my AF1s slightly more stable than stock?

Longtime lurker this thread convinced me to buy some aces for my bigger setup and now I'm in shock at how good they skate. What do I do with all my independent clothing?

Currently on my first set of Aces, not counting my old cruiser. AF1 hollow lows, 33. I'm liking them so far but I've shredded my top bushings in just a few weeks, and the bottoms look like they're on their way out too. Also they feel a little bit too "twitchy" for my liking. One time I threw my board down and as soon as I put my weight on it, it did this weird 90° swerve thing for seemingly no reason and I ate shit.

So I'm debating which replacement bushings I should get. Should I go with the harder ones? If it makes any difference, 80% of my skating consists of slappy and flatground sessions

Yes, getting the Ace hard low bushings makes all the difference in the world with those trucks.  I skated a set of them for like six months and they were great with the replacement bushings

Seconded. @big_kev_215 got me on the lows with the hard bushings and they make all the difference.

Thx slap, just ordered some hard bushings for my ace lows

I've been procrastinating about this as I hate messing with Aces and hard bushings never worked for me
But my original bushings look terrible and my kingpin has too many threads showing

I hope I like em better.

I don't really skate Aces anymore, but when I did, Ace hard bushings felt absolutely perfect for the trucks. Their stock bushings are really just not that good plus they are too soft and squirrely for most people.

Idk if anybody else has had this problem, but my top washer seems to be biting or digging into my bushings as well as the metal around the bushings. This started showing my first sesh skating them.

just replace it with a larger washer, ace washers are too small, other brands are larger.

I put a flat washer like the bones ones on my af1's when I noticed the top bushing getting chewed up. Seems to have solved the issue. For the record I'm pretty sure that's happened to at least the top bushing on any truck I've ever had.

I came from skating Thunders with the Thunder hard 100a black bushings from their rebuild kit, and as a 200lb+ dude I love the Ace Classic bushings; started on Classics then got some hollow AF1s.
The AF1 bushings are too squishy for me tho, didn’t feel as good as my Classics.
Switched them for Ace hard bushings, still no good.
Switched those for Bones medium with flat washers top & bottom, still no good.
Bones hard with flat washers top and bottom, still didn’t feel right.
Put some Ace Classic bushings on my AF1s and all was well with my truck madness…

Some notes after a few more sessions on the AF1 lows:

-It's already been discussed here, but the Ace hard low bushings are the way to go on these trucks. My main issue with the stock bushings is that they basically blew out after a few weeks of slappies. The hard bushings seem like they're gonna hold up better, and just as importantly, they feel better. My board is less twitchy and more stable without sacrificing any of that sweet Ace agility and turning.

-I wound up needing risers. I'm on 52mm radials and was getting pretty bad wheel bite skating flatground. 1/8 inch risers have remedied that. Kind of stinks because I loved how my setup felt without them. Just wasn't feasible for me, though. Maybe once my wheels wear down a bit I can ditch the risers. If my research and math serves correctly, my axle height is sitting at 52mm now, which is 1mm lower than regular AF1s. I feel like a bit of a goof for buying low trucks and then basically converting them back to standard AF1s.

I’m on lows, and they feel amazing. The turn is still amazing, but slightly different in a way I don’t quite understand. But different in a good way

I did Ace AF1 lows with the 1/8" Ace risers underneath, nothing wrong with it. You get better kingpin clearance on the lows, and 52mm tall is still a low height truck. Once you get more used to the pop timing being slightly higher off the ground you will not even think about how they're there. Pretty sure Jordan Trahan runs the lows+riser combo, too.

When I first bought my AF1 in December I thought for sure I was going to put hard bushings in. The nuts came basically flush with the kingpin (unlike other pairs I've seen with some threads showing), and they were so crazy loose but I didn't wanna mess with them for the first while. The first week or so was a huge challenge, but since it was the winter I figured I'd just ride it out and see how long I could go without tightening. Thanks to some Slap posters I knew they'd eventually break in and firm up, which they definitely did right when I was starting to lose faith.

It always felt like with Indy bushings they became whatever they were to become after like 2 sessions, but this really was a few weeks of solid skating. Ultimately I ended up never needing to tighten the trucks (and never used the hard bushings I had already bought in advance), and they're pretty damn perfect.

RE: durability - I purposefully avoided slappys for the first month or two. I think if I had done them earlier the bushings might have gotten screwed up, when they felt way softer. Now I've been back to regularly scheduled slappy crooks, sw slappy crooks, slappy fifties, etc... and the bushings are in great shape. I do a lot of crooked grind variations period so there's always that little indent on my roadside bushings... but honestly it's less so than my Indys would be at this stage.

Disclaimer: this is my first pair of AF1, and I'm like 7 months in.... so this could be a unicorn pair. I recognize there's a chance I'll be chasing this dragon for the rest of my life once they're done.... much like what my relationship with Indy devolved into haha.

My bad if this has already been asked/discussed. Anyone used the hard 94a bottom and the stock 91a top together? No complaints with the hards, just trying to see if I can get that surfy turn a little quicker while still being stable for flip tricks and whatnot.

I have, it's more like just having the hards looser.
I don't know exactly but both being softer is what gives it the surf.
I ride hard with the nut flush, I am a chronic wheel biter.

The dual duro bushing theroy is (this was straight from ACE ages ago/is longboarder logic):

A soft bottom bushing provides the turn. The softer it is, the deeper your turn. This is what makes your truck feel loose.

A hard top bushing provides the snap back to center, this is where your truck becomes responsive, i.e., being able to rebound back/out of the deep turn you just did.

Using a harder bottom restricts your turn (like cranking a soft one down).
Using a softer top lessens/slows your return to center

Putting a soft top (86a) with the stock ace bottom is so mushy and out of control it's crazy unless you weight 50lbs :P and likewise, doing something like a 100a top and a 96/94a bottom just ends up being tight and you don't get that dual duro combo like with ace.

This is where the 90a average comes into play.

94a bottom and 91a top are close enough that I doubt you'd really notice that much of a difference than riding the same duro in each spot...ACE 'mediums' are only 5 duro apart (86a bottom 91a top) but I believe that's the 'magic' combo for that geo (probably after ages of trial and error of different duro combos).

Mixing and matching is the best way to find what you like tho. I've dabbled far too much with bushings and from what I've found, ACE and Royal are the only ones that really work/benefit from the dual duro bushings, probably because they are both so squirrly out of the box to begin with. Indy sort of gain a benefit but (for me) only when using conical bushings (at the cost of that smooth stable long drawn out carve) it makes them more snappy (88a conical bottom/92a top), espcially with Bones med bottom/hard top.

You could always go krux 92 bottom / 96 top if you wanted to keep that dual duro vibe. Problem is finding taller harder bushings that fit ACE.
