I think I'm officially settled into being an Ace Pilot. I've got about 16 sets of trucks that I keep in rotation but I keep coming back around to Ace. My go-tos are Ace AF1 60s on the daily driver, Ace Af1 55 lows or Ace Classic 44s if I'm riding a smaller board and Ace AF1 66s on the curb board.

I stepped back on a homies setup who had thunders and they felt low! it was the 149s i believe and they felt really low compared to the ace 44's im riding

im on the Af1 44s, on a 8.38.i really dig them, just found a lightly used set on ebay to keep in stock

Thanks for the lengthy response. All of that being said, do you think the stock 86a bottom with the 94a too could be a good combo? I want the turn, which I mean, you get the ace turn with the hards, just gotta lean a little harder, but, would the 86a bottom and 94a mix give you that stability for flat ground and not falling off of center so easily when going to pop? That’s why I went to the hards in the first place, because I just didn’t like the feeling off falling off center when trying to pop my board. Or is the 86a bottom just too soft to give you that stability regardless?

My bad if this has already been asked/discussed. Anyone used the hard 94a bottom and the stock 91a top together? No complaints with the hards, just trying to see if I can get that surfy turn a little quicker while still being stable for flip tricks and whatnot.

The dual duro bushing theroy is (this was straight from ACE ages ago/is longboarder logic):

A soft bottom bushing provides the turn. The softer it is, the deeper your turn. This is what makes your truck feel loose.

A hard top bushing provides the snap back to center, this is where your truck becomes responsive, i.e., being able to rebound back/out of the deep turn you just did.

Using a harder bottom restricts your turn (like cranking a soft one down).
Using a softer top lessens/slows your return to center

Putting a soft top (86a) with the stock ace bottom is so mushy and out of control it's crazy unless you weight 50lbs and likewise, doing something like a 100a top and a 96/94a bottom just ends up being tight and you don't get that dual duro combo like with ace.

This is where the 90a average comes into play.

94a bottom and 91a top are close enough that I doubt you'd really notice that much of a difference than riding the same duro in each spot...ACE 'mediums' are only 5 duro apart (86a bottom 91a top) but I believe that's the 'magic' combo for that geo (probably after ages of trial and error of different duro combos).

Mixing and matching is the best way to find what you like tho. I've dabbled far too much with bushings and from what I've found, ACE and Royal are the only ones that really work/benefit from the dual duro bushings, probably because they are both so squirrly out of the box to begin with. Indy sort of gain a benefit but (for me) only when using conical bushings (at the cost of that smooth stable long drawn out carve) it makes them more snappy (88a conical bottom/92a top), espcially with Bones med bottom/hard top.

You could always go krux 92 bottom / 96 top if you wanted to keep that dual duro vibe. Problem is finding taller harder bushings that fit ACE.

I do run flat washers up top, but flush-ish/one thread showin. I'm like 160lbs. Might try the soft/hard combo again but honestly with hards I can still get em to carve like the normal ones when I want, and they're a lot more stable and feel like they have more pop and my legs are less tired from balancing if that makes sense, they still pinch on crooks and stuff, idk. It'd be cool if they made a bottom bushing in 91 or whatever, a 'medium' aftermarket set

Krux bushings are 92a and the same size as stock Ace bushings. They feel really good in Aces

Ace hards both top and bottom are the best thing for Ace trucks in my opinion. The turn is there but with a lot more stability. I wouldn't bother tinkering with any other top/bottom combo. Ps. I'm lightweight.

Set the Aces back up yesterday and just kept the hards in. Didn’t take into consideration the fucked up heat happening here in the summer and they felt very surfy and loose but still stable. At least for the summer, I won’t be messing with any hard/soft combos. 😂

IIRC the Stage IV bottom barrel is about 14.5mm and the Ace bottom barrel is 14mm. I used calipers to measure when I replaced them.

Remember when Krux cushions were the only good option for Ace bottom height bushings back when Ace put rock hard stocks on their trucks? I bought a set of the new new Krux bushings in the white 92a and they don't even properly fit into the bottom washers, had to use the Ace ones. Also, they're just white Indy blues now with no special rebound. Guess the bushings are like their kingpins, only the OG's matter.

I presume broken in bushings might compact down half a mm or so negating the difference....

not sure about the stock bushing themselves but
the ace replacement bushings are compatible with both classics and af1s according to the packaging mesa https://mesaskatesupply.com/products/copy-of-ace-hard-bushings
So other brand bushings at that height should be alright for both

My new deck is a Real True Fit 8.5x31.35 with a 13.75 WB, I want to go low and wide and like a turny truck.

Have been considering putting 8.5" Ace AF1 LOWs on it.

Is that going to be crazy overkill and squirelly since the deck already has such a small WB to start?

I know the LOWs reduce the WB even further than the standard AF1.

used to run 60mm radial fulls and classics on stock af1s. had no issues just cruising around and bombing hills. interms of tricks hella wheelbite. had to sanddown wheelwells and waxing was a constant

I run AF1 66 with hards and 58mm on my tranny set up and don’t have any issues.

I'm so happy to be back on Ace, I tried (idk why) Thunders and it was a horrible experience for me.
Best way I have to explain it is that Thunder go wherever they want and Ace go where I want.

Ace hards are great unless you've already tried them. Stage 4 Indy bushings and Krux will work also.

i rode thunders from 2010-2022. there was a week or so i had the stage-1 33's and only went back to thunders because of the slipped axel and then went back to thunders.

for some reason in 2022 i re tried ace's the af1 44's and loved em. ive been skating them and really dig them- the biggest thing for me was the added height coming from thunders which made my skating a lot better.

i recently stepped on a homies board who has the thunder 149s and hated how low they feel. i guess they work for some but i like how ace's feel

and as for the bushings i love the ace hards- im also 135lbs and they work great for me. ace for life!

Also Ace bushings don't betray you. It doesn't matter the season they stay the same. I remember when skating Indy's I'll have to loosen them badly on winter and crank them in summer.
